From Father John: In all places and circumstances, Christians, with the help of their pastors, are called to hear the cry of the poor. Pope Francis, (Evangelii Gaudium - The Joy of the Gospel) I will be on vacation from August 1 st through August 14 th. Fr. Dennis Phiri, a good friend of mine, from the Diocese of Chipata in Zambia is staying at St. Paul s for a few weeks and will help cover for me while I am away. Please welcome him and share your love and kindness with him as you have with me for these past three years. Fr. Dennis is the Director of Caritas Chipata and the following is some background information from him about his diocese and the mission of Caritas. Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. (Mttw: 19:21) We will be having a parish mission and second collection for Caritas Chipata and the Diocese of Chipata on August 13 th and 14 th. From Fr. Dennis Phiri: Caritas Chipata is the international version of Catholic Charities that operates in the Diocese of Chipata. The Diocese of Chipata is 26,692 square miles in size. In comparison, the city of Joliet is 62.768 square miles in size. That means that the Diocese of Chipata is approximately 425 times the size of the city of Joliet. It has a population of 1.85 million people. Of that, 415,500 are Catholics which represents 22.4% of the total population. The diocese has 26 parishes and 75 priests. 50 of the priests are incardinated in the Dioceses of Chipata while the other 25 are members of various religious orders. Zambia is among the poorest countries in the world with a family living on an average of less than two dollars per day. 60% of the Zambian population live below the poverty line. Of the Zambian population, 42% live in extreme poverty (World Bank survey, updated April 8, 2016). The Diocese of Chipata is a rural Diocese with the majority of the people living in villages without many of the basic human necessities. There is poor housing and lack of adequate clothing to protect people from the elements. Malnutrition is common especially among children because my people have very little food. The majority of the people of my country are only able to manage one meal per day. Medical services are hard to access because of the great distance that many people live from a health clinic. Plus, there are only a few health clinics in the entire diocese. Unfortunately, the health clinics, oftentimes, do not have the essential medications that my people need and are unable to get them because of their great cost. Many children cannot go to school, not because they do not want to go to school, but because their parents cannot afford the tuition and fees that they would be charged to send their children to school. The full cost of educating a child is born by the child s parents and many of my people are simply unable to give their children an education. It is to all of these people who are in desperate need that Caritas Chipata tries to help. Caritas is dedicated to Charity and Love for all and is the wing of the Catholic Church in Zambia that works to help the poor, the impoverished and the needy. The Catholic Church, through Caritas, has become the refuge for many people. We have the mandate to foster and uphold the human dignity of each person in Zambia through the promotion of integral human development as we target helping the poor and the marginalized, especially women and vulnerable children through our various programs. Please join hands with my Bishop and me in aiding so many suffering people. Thank you and God Bless You!

St. Paul the Apostle School Summer Spotlight-Featuring Mrs. Katie Nelson, 1st Grade Teacher at St. Paul the Apostle School My name is Katie Nelson. This marks my sixth year teaching first grade at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School. Before coming to St. Paul s, I taught kindergarten for seventeen years at St. Patrick Grade School in Joliet. Teaching, inspiring and helping children succeed has always been a passion of mine. I am fortunate to do what I love every day at St. Paul s. Catholic education began at an early age for me, being in the first kindergarten class at St. Jude School in Joliet. I attended St. Jude s through eighth grade and graduated from St. Francis Academy, Class of 86. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and most recently earned my English as a Second Language certificate from the University of St. Francis. My husband, Ken and I were married at St. Patrick Catholic Church in 1995 by Fr. Jim Lennon. We are the proud parents of two daughters, Amanda, 16, who is a junior at JCA and Molly, 9, who will be in fourth grade at St. Paul s. My favorite things to do are spending time with my family and cheering on Amanda and Molly at their activities. I enjoy traveling and had a great vacation with my family in Florida this summer. During the summer, I love to read, go to the beach, and go to farmer s markets and festivals. During the school year, I love to find new ways to introduce the world to my students. I regularly invite guest speakers in to bring their special touch to a topic we are learning about in class. I seek out interesting books to read aloud in class and we enjoy writing to the authors. Last year, one of the authors replied with a web cam message which was a great surprise for us. Growing up on a farm, I like to tell the class some of my farm stories. Those stories have inspired me to begin working on a children s book of my own. Being a teacher at St. Paul s gives me a rich opportunity every day to work side by side with a terrific staff. Our staff shares a common ground to help all students reach their furthest potential. Also, teaching at a Catholic school allows me to convey to my students daily that they are a unique and awesome child of God. I enjoy working with parents to help further their children in all areas of growth-academically, emotionally and spiritually. I owe my strong faith and love of family to my late parents, Bob and Mary Larkin. I am thankful for the rewards Catholic education has offered me as a student, parent and teacher. I am looking forward to a great 2016-17 school year!

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 07August 2016 Hard but clear words today. Jesus tells his beloved little flock that includes us to sell belongings and give alms. Do not be afraid. Sell. Give. Yet, we are sometimes afraid to let go, to give away. I really like this, we say. I might need it later, we say. Since we are numbered among his disciples, what Jesus said to Peter and to the rest of the Followers, he says to us: Do not fear! Give alms! Be ready to act for the benefit of others; be ready to do what is good! So, this week, I will! RAINBOWS FOR ALL CHILDREN Rainbows is a program that provides healing for children who have experienced loss either through death or divorce. Just as adults need to grieve their losses, children do as well. Our program is set up for children in Kindergarten through 8 th grade. Rainbows meet six Wednesdays in October and November and six Wednesday in January and February (6-7 pm). We are in need of trained facilitators for our program. This is a volunteer position for which you will be trained. You do not have to be a counselor or social worker but you do have the heart to help children walk through their grief by talking in a safe environment. More information for families with children who may benefit from Rainbows is the parish website. Call Sr. Karen @ 815-725-6927 if you are interested in becoming a facilitator. Sunday, August 7th, 2016 Let us turn our hearts back to God and allow him to lead and guide us so that we can fulfill God s plan and purpose for our lives and marriages. Sign up today to attend one of the upcoming Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends on August 12-14, 2016 or October 7-9, 2016 or December 9-11, 2016, all at Elk Grove Village, IL. Early registration is highly recommended. For reservations/information, call Jim & Kris at 630-577-0778 or contact us through http://wwme-chicagoland.org.
