Whether you have been out because of vacation, or you have not been in church for years, this is the Sunday to come back. We are Rounding Up everyone! Worship will be followed by a Round Up Sunday Potluck lunch. Different groups are asked to bring different food items to the Café prior to lunch. Many of us have gotten out of our routines. Begin your fall off right and get ready for Round-Up Sunday. You will also get a chance to sign-up for service, outreach, and upcoming fall educational opportunities including but not limited to: Alphaintroduction to Christianity Serving from the Heart finding your gifts and talents for services. God s Grand Plot one day course including an over view of the Bible as well as looking at God s involvement in everyday life. She is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, serving as director of a daycare center for young children in a poor neighborhood of Asunción, Paraguay. She was commissioned in October 2012. Mary Escobar was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and lived there until her family relocated to Dallas, Texas when she was 14 years of age. Mary holds two degrees in education, a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, and a Master of Science in special education from the University of Texas at Dallas, located in Richardson. She made a commitment to mission early in life, strongly influenced by a cousin and an aunt. Mary intended her academic training in education to Gravy: New Beginnings Class Green Beans and 4 dozen Rolls, Green Salads: Unity Class Macaroni & Cheese and Kid friendly food, and 4 dozen Rolls: Builders Class Desserts: Friendship Class, Harmony Class, & any others not in a Sunday School class So save the date August 23, invite your friends, and we will see you there! serve her mission goals. However, she began her professional career as a mission violinist. Then in 1990, following language training, she was accepted by the Mission Society for United Methodists (now called The Mission Society), for service in Paraguay. Mary is pleased to be returning to Paraguay, again serving in Latin America, as did her aunt and cousin before her. See you there. The Food Pantry is in need of: small bottles of waffle syrup & cans of Vienna Church Matters Beach Club It s almost Beach Club time! By partnering with KiDs Beach Club, a national ministry that desires to impact communities by connecting kids to Christ and putting Bibles in their hands, Euless First has a special opportunity to share the Gospel with children in our local community. KiDs Beach Club is an after school program for 3rd through 6th grade boys and girls, where children can come together to worship God, learn Bible stories, sing, pray, eat snacks, have fun with friends and build relationships with adults who care about them. We of Euless First sponsor the Kids Beach Club at South Euless Elementary School; we meet in the school gym on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:15. We will be starting up again on Tuesday, September 15. Last year we were blessed with about 50 children coming each week, and we hope that number will grow. There are many ways that YOU can support this ministry. Volunteers are greatly needed to come in and help the children learn Bible stories and experience God s love. Euless First Preschool Angel News: Euless First United Methodist Preschool is excited to begin another year! We added a new toddler class last year, and are overjoyed to have it again this year. We now take children who are 18 months old. This allows us to take children who are not potty trained, so 2 year olds who are not trained yet, may attend this class. Enrollment is going very well this year. Our staff will attend training the beginning of August with a coalition of Christian preschools at Compass Christian church. We will have some awesome speakers who will motivate all staff for a great year. Just as a reminder the Preschool has classes for children 18 months thru pre-kindergarten, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. With Monday, Wednesday, Friday; Tuesday, Thursday or Monday-Friday classes depending on availability and age. We also have extended care available till 2:00 p.m. with enrichment classes or lunch bunch options. There will be a Parent s Meeting on September 1. We will have an Open House for the students on September 2 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The first day of school is Thursday, September 3. We still have spots available in some of the classes, so please talk us up in the community! We d like to fill every spot! Book Club The end of summer is in sight, but there is still one more installment of Euless First UMC s Summer Book Club! Like last summer we have been reading one book each month. Our last meeting of the summer is scheduled for August 30. We will read Creating a Prodigal- Friendly Church by Jeff Lucas. We have a couple extra books in the office if you still need one. Lord s Acre Page 4 The date has been set, and the theme is beginning to take shape for the 2015 Lord s Acre at Euless First United Methodist Church. We are focusing this year on Psalm 65:9-11. Verse 11 says, You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. We remember that God is who gives us all that we have. God gives us such beautiful bounty. Our response to this bounty is to give a portion of it back to God and serving others. That is very much what Euless First United Methodist Church s annual Lord s Acre event is all about sharing what we have so that others may know God s abundance as we do. Euless First s Lord s Acre is an event that begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes after the live auction ends around 2:00 p.m. We will need lots of help. It is time now to start all of your craft projects, and gathering items for the silent and live auctions. Remember new items are what we need! We hope you will join us on October 24th for fun, food, auctions, crafts, and more!

Invitation to Choir Choir is such a wonderful part of worship. Here are a couple of reasons that Euless First loves having a choir in worship: 1. Visual Energy The choir brings us visual energy. If the person/ people leading worship are visually engaging, (not distracting or for show which can sometimes be a fine line but is better hashed out in length in another post) then it engages the congregation as well. This great group of people breaks down barriers for those who might be uncomfortable otherwise. 2. Built in Group Who Know New Songs It sure is nice to have help with those songs that we are not too familiar with. 4.Vocal Adrenaline - Visual energy was already mentioned, but there is a distinct audio energy that exists with a choir as well. Simple physics would teach us that the more people you have singing the same thing the more energy produced per note More people = more loud!!!! There is just something powerful behind a large group of people lifting up the name of Jesus together, and it provides wonderful worship leading. 5. It is a Blessing It is not just a blessing to those of us that get to listen to the wonderful music each Sunday, but the joy it brings the members each week is wonderful. Fellowship and community are the best part of Euless First s choir. Of all the groups at the church, the choir might be the most diverse group that laughs a bunch. Under the leadership of Mark and Vicki Baker this group blesses us all. With the break of summer ending, and fall schedules getting ready to gear up, the Euless First United Methodist Music Ministries want you to join them leading us all in worship. Euless First has several different music options for everyone. On Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Bell Choir Room on the second floor there is Bell Choir and Monday s Music for kids. Then on Wednesday s at 7:00 in the Swor Parlor there is Chancel Choir Practice. To kick off the fall practices, the Choir is inviting anyone who is interested to join them in the Swor Parlor on Wednesday, August 12th at 7:00 p.m. for a summer party. Please join us for fun, fellowship, and music! If you have any questions, please ask Mark or Vicki Baker, or anyone in the choir. 3. Ministry Involvement There is not a better way to get people involved in worship. No matter how you go about it, it is a great way to connect people to a ministry within the church plain and simple. From the Pastor As of July 1st of this year, I have been reappointed to serve as your Senior Pastor for a fourth year! I am really pleased to be able to share this with you. I look forward to our future together! I don't know if you remember this, but a few weeks ago I said something like this in the midst of a sermon: "I guess if life were all easy, you would have to call it something different." Since then, I have heard or read several other people say something similar. It's not that life is supposed to be hard, or complicated. It is just that we exist as complex beings. If that weren't enough, our lives are made up, to a great extent, of complex relationships. Complexity means difficulty and challenge, learning to balance and to slog through difficult times, and to enjoy the good times as they come. This is as true for followers of Jesus as for anyone, and it is as true for churches as it is for individuals or families. Sometimes life is really, really challenging. We are in the midst of such a time as a church! Our sanctuary was struck by lightning in April. In the next couple of months, we expect to receive an offer for the part of our property that the state will be taking to expand highway 183. If these two weren't enough, we have kids growing up, marriages beginning, marriages ending, and some relationships just plodding along "same as it ever was." Some of us move away. Some of us age out of being able to come to worship anymore. Some of us graduate to life eternal. And in the midst of this all, here we are, Euless First United Methodist Church. We've been here for 139 years though none of us is 139 years old. The Church survives us. The Church lives in and through us. We are part of the life of the Church together. I have found great joy in serving as your pastor for the past 3 years, and I look forward to the future as we get to continue this life together. May we pay close attention to God as we are called to continue following Jesus better today than yesterday. Volunteers Needed Euless First United Methodist Church depends a great deal on volunteers to help make many things happen in the life of the church. One such task that we could use your help with is the monthly newsletters. Once a month we ask a team of volunteers to help fold, put on labels and sort newsletters in preparation for mailing. We would like to have enough volunteers where the volunteers are only asked to help every three or more months. This job will take approximately 2 hours. Stewardship Moment Online Giving Link Page 10 HANDLING OUR WEALTH Part 1 of 4: Every Single Cent Money affects every aspect of our lives. It is one of the acid tests of character and so it is not surprising that scripture has a lot to say about it. Did you know that there are over 2,300 verses in the Bible that deal with our possessions? Jesus knew how important it was to talk about since two-thirds of his parables address the topic. Why is money and our possessions such an issue for God? The way we handle our money doesn t just affect us in our pocketbook, it affects us spiritually. How we handle our money affects our relationship with the Lord. These scripture passages highlight four principles: 1) God is the owner of everything. 2) We are to be generous with the treasure entrusted to us. 3) We are to prudently manage our treasure. 4) Our treasure can be dangerous if not handled responsibly before God. The first and foundational principle is that God is the source of everything. He owns it all. We are his managers. We really own absolutely nothing in God s eyes. Every cent, every possession is God s. This is quite contrary to the me culture that teaches us to think this is my house, my car, my bank account. Recognizing God s ownership of all things is critical in allowing Him to become Lord of our money and our possessions. This may seem limiting, but it is really liberating. Strange as it seems, money and possessions, which should be among the blessings of life, have tied more people in knots, caused more failed marriages, and sent more people to the psychiatrist than we ll ever know. This is largely because many people live by their pocketbook and try to fulfill their lives with things, finding it easy to act as if God doesn t exist in this area of their lives. Slowly the mindset can develop that, I worked hard for what I have, and it s mine to do as I choose. We cannot own something without it owning us. We lose joy and a sense of freedom if we try to play God. He owns. We manage. When we pursue the created instead of the Creator, we create our own materialistic god. Giving a meaningful percentage of one s income is a step in the right direction. Why? Because it helps a person to develop a right perspective that all our money, ability, our very lives, belong to God. These are trusts from God to be used as He would have them used. It frees us from faithless fear and results in an indescribable freedom that can never come to those who think they must do everything for themselves. We acknowledge God s existence and His ownership of everything by using God s resources for furthering God s kingdom. It shifts our interest from earth to heaven from self to God. It is investing for eternity. In the next few issues of this newsletter, we will explore our responsibility in handling our treasure effectively and generously and the dangers that are present if we do not act responsibly. What Does Scripture Say? The earth is the Lord s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it. Ps. 24:1 The silver is mine and the gold is mine, declares the Lord Almighty. Haggai 2:8 You may say to yourself, My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me. But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. Deut. 8:17-18
Highway Update Before sharing the latest news on the highway expansion, I want to share this again: if anyone has any question about this project, I would be happy to meet with you, or take a phone call from you, to answer any question you might have. Especially if you've heard any rumors about decisions we have made, or that have been made that affect us as a church, I really want to talk to you about these! Early in July several of the leaders of Euless FUMC met with the District Board of Church Location and Building. This meeting is required by The Book Of Discipline before the formation of a Building Committee. Our Lay Leadership Team assembled a team lead by Rev. Beverly Springer to prepare a report for this meeting. The team consisted of Larry Augustus, Carla Fink, Linda Lewis, Mike McGehee, Lynne Moffatt, Tami Polenz, and Lee Swann. The report that this team produced was so thorough that the District Board expressed how impressive it was! The Board voted unanimously to encourage us to move forward with forming a Building Committee to face the next steps of the process. Late in June, our attorney and I met with a land planner employed by Southgate, the developer responsible for the highway work. This land planner's report, in conjunction with the work done by their appraiser earlier this year, will lead to an initial offer to us by Southgate. This offer could come as soon as next week or as late as this fall. Whenever the offer comes, I hope you are encouraged that your Church is facing this head on as we prepare for the future God has for us! -Pastor Steve Adopt-A-School It's Back to School time for all of you who'd like to mentor a student at our HEB Adopt-A- School partner-south Euless Elementary. Again this year the school is requesting volunteers to go and eat lunch with an assigned student. The counselor will match you up with a child and you simply show up 1x a week (or whatever works for you) and spend 30 minutes with the student while (s)he eats lunch. This is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young person. Please prayerfully consider. Ministry Safe Well, Ministry Safe had a great beginning! Thank you to everyone who has taken the online training, test, and got your background check. There is still more to be done. Coming in the next couple of months we will have to interview volunteers and will be holding trainings pertaining to our own congregation s policies and procedures to deal with keeping ministry safe for all persons involved. We have learned so much and know that it is dangerous to keep secrets. Please continue to be in prayer for Euless First throughout the process of protecting children from abuse within our ministries. Together we want to raise children that know their value and worth in God s eyes as well as ours.
