Under the inspiration of our patron saint, we seek to build a caring community that embraces the values he modeled of friendship, integrity and courageous love of God.

My Dear People, Today s theme on the readings: THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God s loving kindness, the shining glory of God s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God s face is shown to us and God s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness. Fr. John TODAY S READINGS First Reading: The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27) Psalm: May God bless us in his mer cy. (Psalm 67) Second Reading: God sent the Spir it of the Son into our hearts, crying out, Abba, Father! So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God. (Galatians 4:4-7) Gospel: The shepher ds glor ified and pr aised God for all they had heard and seen. If one of yours is to improve your prayer life, try meditation. We meet the second Monday of each month in the Fireside room, this time on January 9 th. Meditation starts at 7:45pm. If you re new, come at 7:30 for some help getting started. Questions? Call Kathleen at (949) 551-5339. Dear Parishioners, We need your input! Beginning January 9 th, we will be conducting a comprehensive campaign planning study at St. Thomas More. In a relatively short period of time, we have undergone tremendous spiritual and physical change. Our parish leaders have designed and executed a master plan to meet the needs of our vibrant and growing faith community, and we have accomplished a great deal. Now, we are in a position where we can finally address our last and perhaps most important need a permanent church where we can grow in our faith and love of God! However, before we make any final decisions on how to proceed, we would like to hear from you. Through the study, you will be asked to share your thoughts regarding the project and the possibility of conducting a major fundraising effort. Your feedback will enable us to determine potential support for a campaign. If we, as a faith community, choose to move forward, the planning study will also provide us with information to identify prospective campaign leaders and to establish a realistic campaign goal. We have hired the Steier Group, a Catholic development firm, to compile this information and present it to our parish leadership. At that time, we will make an informed decision regarding our next steps. I believe that this process is extremely important, and I encourage each and every church family to participate. Your input is valuable as we plan for the future of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish. God Bless, Fr. John Janze, Pastor

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Octave comes from the Latin word for eight, and since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the eighth day, since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co

THERESE COMES TO CHRIST CATHEDRAL ON JANUARY 27 th, 28 th, AND 29 th Therese: The Story of a Soul will be performed within the Freed Theater on the Christ Cathedral campus, January 27 th, 28 th, and 29 th. This incredible performance is a face-to-face encounter with St. Therese of Lisieux, the most beloved saint of modern times. In this one-woman performance, Therese speaks directly to the audience, with humor, grace and humility. This is not the saccharine story of the Little Flower, but an honest, loving portrait of a real girl who struggled with anxieties, but overcame these obstacles by trusting in God. Therese s honest, direct spirituality speaks powerfully to our busy culture, with the encouraging message that anyone can become a saint. Tickets may be purchased by calling (714) 282-3045.
