Gentlemen, I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE November was a fairly busy month with 40 Days for Life The Veterans Appreciation Dinner Keep Christ in Christmas tree cutting and Set up Corporate Communion Memorial Mass for Deceased Members. I believe that this year we had about 50 or so veterans attend our Veterans Appreciation Dinner that was wonderfully prepared by Resident Chef Sam Pellegrino. The Naval Sea Cadets presented the Colors, Former DD Tom Pursley talked about The MIA Table and Sir Knight and Colonel Ron Averill gave the keynote speech on our nation s involvement in Vietnam. Our Memorial Mass was attended by about 40 or so members and guests. Thanks to Fr. Tim for celebrating the Mass with us. Sam Pellegrino asked me to thank all who came out on a sunny day in November to cut and set up trees for our Keep Christ in Christmas display that is now lit up and ready for viewing at Pellegrino s Italian Kitchen (Free Shameless Plug, Your Welcome), by the time you read this. December looks like more of the same, plenty to do before Christmas, Monday, December 7 th is our Packing Party at Columbian Hall @ 7PM. Tree Delivery is scheduled for Saturday, December 12 th beginning at 8AM at the same location. Please contact District Deputy Darren Johnson to volunteer. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is Tuesday, December 8 th. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is Saturday, December 12 th. (My birthday is Sunday, December 13 th ; I think I ll take the day off). Our Council and Assembly Christmas Party (where we host six military families) is at Columbian Hall at 6PM on Thursday, December 17 th. Friday, December 18th at Sacred Hearts Hallen is our preschool Christmas party at 6pm. Gentlemen I hope that everyone has a Joyous and Blessed Christmas, thanks for all you do. Respectfully, Michael R. Colosi, Grand Knight Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Page -3-

Dear Faithful Brother Knights FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE Saturday, November 14 th, was our Veterans Appreciation Dinner at Hallen Hall. It was well attended and the feedback from many of the veterans has been really positive. My dental office sponsored the event this year, for the first time, and I think I will offer to do so again next year. Fr. Lawrence Gosselin, Assembly Faithful Friar, gave the invocation. Fr. Vasyl from St. George s was also in attendance. The turkey dinner, prepared by Brother Sam Pellegrino, was excellent. Combining this with the white table cloths and red and blue linen napkins (from Brother Jack Winslow) added a touch of class to the event. The contingent of Sea Cadets presented and retired the colors. They did a superb job, were professional and attentive, and were much appreciated. Our very own Schola sang the National Anthem. District Deputy Mentor, Tom Pursley introduced the table for MIA s and read the names of local MIA s, followed by my friend, Robert Legg, singing a patriotic song, which he wrote, Our Flag. Our keynote speaker, Colonel Ronald H. Averill, US Army, retired gave an inspiring speech and history lesson about Viet Nam. Our new Council Chaplain, Fr. Tim Ilgen gave the Benediction and then during the retiring of the colors, followed by taps, our dismissal song was, God Bless America, led by our Schola. On November 19 th we had a Memorial Mass, concelebrated by Fr. Tim and Fr. Peter from the Abbey (newly joined to the Knights). Once again, our Schola Cantorum sang beautifully. We then had our final Corporate Communion of the year on November 22 nd at St. Michael Downtown. As with most of all 4 th degree events, our wives were in attendance. We had a great brunch, in a private room, at the Mercato Restaurant in Olympia. Our next Corporate Communion will likely be at the Abbey Church. I want to send out a special thank you to Brother Sam Pellegrino for doing the majority of the organizing duties of these events. See the following pages of this newsletter for some photos from these events. Our final event of the year is the Council and Assembly Christmas Party on Thursday, December 17 th, 6 PM, Columbian Hall. Along with our sponsor, Mills and Mills, we will be giving 6 military families, $500 apiece. Don t miss this fun event. It was a great year, my friends, and I have been honored to be your Faithful Navigator. I would like each of you to focus on introducing yourself to young men at your churches and telling them why they should join the Knights of Columbus. Also, tell your friends who aren t Knights that you would like for them to join. I would also like for every one of you to participate in at least one of the events we are having in December to help those that are less fortunate during this Advent Season. We have the Knights Before Christmas, the Drexel House, and the Children s Christmas Party. Like I always say, please mark your calendars, gentlemen. A NEW DOCUMENTARY FILM FROM THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The most important event in the evangelization of the New World occurred in December 1531. Over the course of four days, the Virgin Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, appeared to an indigenous convert named Juan Diego. As a result of this encounter, and the image miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego s tilma (cloak), nine million Native Americans embraced the Catholic faith, and the Americas began its transformation into the Catholic hemisphere. Our Lady of Guadalupe s message of love had replaced the institutionalized violence of the Aztec culture and built a bridge between two worlds. Guadalupe: The Miracle and the Message, narrated by famed actor Jim Caviezel, traces the history of this transformative event from the 16th century to the present. Featuring interviews with leading theologians, historians and experts on the scientific inquiries into the miraculous image this gripping film explores both the inexplicable mysteries behind the image, and the continued relevance of the Guadalupe apparition to the modern world. If you missed it on TV a DVD copy has been purchased. To borrow please call Ed Sauley at 360-480- 9329. It may be shown to groups or just to families. SACRED HEART INVITATION On the December 19 th, we will celebrate the Simbang Gabi here at Sacred Heart at our 5 PM Saturday Mass. The Simbang Gabi is a Filipino devotional tradition celebrating their love of God through Mary and the nine months that she carried Jesus in her womb. It is scheduled for the nine days preceding Christmas. Simbang Gabi is celebrated in many different parishes throughout the entire Archdiocese of Seattle. Simbang Gabi, meaning Night Mass is an adaptation of the Filipino Catholic traditional pre-christmas devotion originally known as Misa de Aguinaldo (Mass of the Gift). It is a nine-day series of novena of masses held in preparation for Christmas introduced in the Philippines by the Spanish friars. The liturgy was traditionally celebrated as early as four in the morning to accommodate the farm workers setting off early for the fields. To accommodate the needs of today s families, Filipinos have adapted this Christmas tradition all over the world according to location and social context. It is now common to celebrate this novena in the evening, hence the name Simbang Gabi (Night Mass). Don t miss the great variety of food at the dinner that follows Mass. Come and join us for a wonderful Filipino celebration. Page -12-

MILESTONE HIGHLIGHTS K OF C S FINANCIAL PROTECTION OF CATHOLIC FAMILIES Canada all of whom are members of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus recently surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force, marking an important milestone in the Catholic fraternal benefit society s mission to protect the future of Catholic families. This milestone was achieved despite continuing adverse conditions affecting the insurance industry. Established in 1882 by a young Catholic priest, the organization which offers its line of top-rated products exclusively to its members and their eligible family members manages $21 billion in assets and ranks 939 on the 2015 Fortune 1000 list, placing it among the largest life insurers in North America. The $100 billion milestone is not simply a number, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. It highlights the fact that each year we are protecting the future of more Catholic families, continuing the mission of our founder, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. The Knights of Columbus offers insurance to its members and their families through a network of more than 1,500 dedicated, professional agents in the United States and With each dollar of top-rated insurance in force that our professional agency force adds, additional, meaningful security is provided to the families whose livelihoods we protect, the Supreme Knight said. To read a full interview with Supreme Knight Anderson on this milestone, please click here. The $100 billion milestone caps a year in which the Knights of Columbus set a new record for insurance sales with $8 billion sold, earned the top rating of A++ Superior from AM Best for the 40th consecutive year, and was named a World s Most Ethical Company for the second consecutive year by the Ethisphere Institute. The Knights of Columbus is the world s largest Catholic fraternal organization with nearly 1.9 million members worldwide. It is also one of the most active charitable organizations in the United States. The Knights set a new record for charitable giving in 2014 with donations of more than $173.5 million and 71.5 million hours of service to charitable causes. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FIELD AGENT POSITION AVAILABLE The Knights of Columbus is seeking a field agent for a career opportunity. You would represent the K of C insurance program in Western Washington (including coverage of members of our council 1643). This is a full time position with benefits. You must be eligible for Knights of Columbus membership. For information, please contact General Agent Jarrod Roth at (360) 475-0784 or via email at rothagencymail@kofc.org Page -13-
