Sukkot & Pizza in the Hut Oct 16 Pizza in the Hut will be celebrated before our Sukkot service on Sunday, October 16, at 5:45 p.m. All members are invited for a pizza and salad dinner in our Sukkah before services, which will start at 7 p.m. During services, new members who have joined Seaside since this past April s New Member Shabbat will be welcomed. The Membership Committee hopes to see you at the event. Let s fill the Sukkah with joy and camaraderie. Men s & Juliet Lunches Oct 20 Everyone is invited to our men s and ladies (Juliet) luncheons on October 20. The SJC men will meet at the SJC parking lot at 11:30. From there, we will carpool to a place we select at that time. Some lunch suggestions are Semra s Mediterranean Grill, Nicolas, or Casa Amici. Whatever it is, we will have a lot of fun. Simchat Torah & Religious School Consecration Oct 23 On Sunday, October 23, at 11 a.m., SJC will celebrate Simchat Torah with a festival service, including Yizkor. As part of the celebration we will read from the very end and beginning of the scroll. In between the readings, the entire scroll is unrolled and rerolled with all participants holding it, dancing and singing. It is always an amazing experience! There will be something new at our Rosh Hashanah services this year. We will have a security guard and two SJC ushers in the sanctuary lobby. This additional security is unfortunately a sign of the times, but we want you to feel comfortable while at services. We will have similar security measures at our Yom Kippur services. Several weeks ago, I was looking at the SJC newsletter, and I clicked on the tab for our history. I was surprised that there was very little there to read about. For SJC s twentieth year, I would like to see a more formal history of our congregation prepared. If you are interested in working on this, please contact me. You may already have a written history, or be in possession of photos or other important documents. You might also be a new member who is interested enough in the congregation to dive into its history. Whatever it is, please let me know if you are interested in working on this project. And finally, to all of you who have donated your time and efforts to Seaside during the past year, a big THANK YOU. We are an organization of volunteers, and our volunteers are absolutely the best. Board Nominations Close Oct 5 SJC s annual membership meeting will occur on Sunday, December 4. We will be electing 3 members to our 9-person Board of Directors. Nominations close on October 5, as our By-Laws require that nominations be submitted at least sixty days prior to the meeting. We are seeking nominations for the 3 positions. Each is for a 3-year term, beginning on the third Saturday in December when the Board installation occurs. Nominees for the Board must be SJC members in good standing. If you are interested or know of anyone who would be willing to serve, please contact SJC s Nominating Committee Chair, Jason Bradley, at 302-644- 1376, or by email at jb620@comcast. net. Before making a nomination, please be sure the individual you are nominating is willing to serve. We are seeking individuals who desire to take a leadership role in the community and who, perhaps, will one day want to serve as an officer of the board. SJC s management is through our volunteer Board of Directors. While no policy decisions will be made at the annual meeting, the Board hopes to get feedback from you on the things SJC does. The meeting gives you a chance to hear about committee work and, we hope, become involved as a member of a committee that seems most attractive to you. If there any items that you may want brought before the membership at the annual meeting, please email them to the co-presidents by October 20. Their email addresses are shown at left. HHD Youth Services/ Activities Activities and services for young people on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur mornings begin at 10 a.m. Two programs are available. One is a service for those who are old enough to participate (usually 9 and older), and the other is an activity program with stories and arts and crafts for our younger folks. An adult family member must accompany children under 5. All the young people will come into the sanctuary and sit as a group for the taking out and reading of the Torah. After the Torah is read, they will join their families in the sanctuary for the remainder of the service. Snacks will be provided for the children on Rosh Hashanah, but for the Yom Kippur program, parents will need to provide their children s snacks. Note that this is a change since last month s newsletter. The Youth Education Committee is in search of a few volunteers to help with both programs. Holiday Course for Preschoolers & Parents It s not too late to register for SJC s holiday course for 3- and 4-yearolds and their parents. The first class was September 25, but there are five more to go! The classes will cover each major holiday through story, music, and crafts. The cost of the series is $75 per family for members and $90 for non-members. Bring your check to the first class. The dates of the remaining classes are October 16, December 18, January 29, March 5, April 2, and May 7 10 from 10:00 to 10:45 at SJC. Simchat Torah & Religious School Consecration Oct 23 continued from page 2 consecration where we welcome our new students. The consecration ceremony officially recognizes the beginning of their formal Jewish education. They will be presented with certificates and the students will share the wimples their parents created to honor the occasion. A wimple is an ornate, embroidered or painted cloth used to bind up the Torah scroll after it has been read. A pot luck dairy lunch will follow. If you plan to attend, please bring a dairy/pareve dish to share. Friendly Reminder Children should always be supervised at SJC. If you bring a child to an event they should be with you or another adult at all times.
Page 4 Seaside Jewish Community October 2016 Adult Education Programs Meetings are at SJC at 7:30 p.m. All are invited. First Thursday: Jewish History & More! On October 6, we ll continue our Jewish History program by viewing a DVD and discussing the Diaspora about the lives of Jews in places outside of Israel. The dispersion began with the Babylonia exile and continues now and into the future. Esther and Daniel, representing Jews of the post-exile Biblical times, find themselves in foreign courts not of their own volition, but on arriving, they make the best of their circumstances. Then, on November 3, we will view the last DVD of the series on Jewish History and the Bible. The DVD covers the Bible s apocalyptic literature. This is the literature that raises universal questions about the time of creation and the end of time. Come and learn! Also, an exciting and new kind of Jewish History program for 2017 will be announced soon. Second Thursday: A Taste of Mussar Each month, we study one virtue or character trait (middah) that is part of Mussar, the ethical and cultural component and discipline of Judaism. On October 13, we ll review our practice of the middah of Order and begin studying the next Middah, Equanimity. This month we are paying attention to our own experiences with Order too much, too little? Are we disorderly and if so, what are the impacts on others as a result of our disorder? Are we hyper-organized and if so, what is the impact on others? Then on November 10, we ll review our practice of the middah of Equanimity and begin studying the next Middah, Honor. Please let Rabbi Beth know (bethcohen@verizon.net) if you ll be joining the group for the first time, so she can send you a packet of introductory information before your first session. Third Thursday: Potpourri On October 20, SJC member, Jeff Fried, President and CEO of Beebe Healthcare, will give us his annual update on matters pertaining to the health and well-being of members of our community. He will outline the plans Beebe is making to serve the health care needs of a growing and aging community, and he will discuss some of the changes that will be brought about to improve the way health care is delivered in our community. Changes mandated by the Affordable Care Act, payment reform, and Beebe s involvement with other health systems will complete the evening s discussion. Join us for these informative and lively discussions. There will not be a session on November 17. Rather, we are having a special event on November 20. See separate article on page 5. Fourth Thursday: Pirkei Avot On October 27, we continue our discussion of Chapter 6, the last chapter, of Pirkei Avot. The first five chapters deal with the proper model of moral and ethical character development. Chapter 6 speaks to the beauty of the Torah itself, and its elevating inspiring effect on those who study it for its own sake. For those who have had only a smattering of Torah study, and even for those who have had more extensive study, this chapter may lead us into areas we probably never even considered. And because of our free-flowing method of discussion, we will have an interesting sharing of ideas. Book Review The Adult Education Committee recommends the book Not in God s Name by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd. In confronting religious violence, Rabbi Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, addresses the problems in misreading of Biblical texts to promote justification for such acts altruistic, evil, committed in a sacred cause, politicized religious extremism, dualism separating peoples into those of light and those darkness. Best read slowly, with a Bible by one s side, Sacks gives a new reading to our Biblical texts. This book is available through the Delaware Library System. Wednesday Mornings at Seaside Every Wednesday morning from 9 to 10:30, you will find the SJC doors open for anyone interested in a contemplative, spiritual, peace-filled start to their day. October 2016 Seaside Jewish Community Page 5 Islam, Judaism and Christianity Nov 6 It Is Not Us and Them; It s All of Us! is an interfaith event developed by SJC and Epworth United Methodist Church. The event, which will be held at EUMC, will feature Sobia Choudri and Usman Sandhu. They and their family live in Dover and are practicing Muslims. Sobia is a dentist; her husband, Usman, is a residential builder. Both are active in Muslim and interfaith organizations. They will have a conversation with us regarding common threads between Islam, Judaism and Christianity, as well as distinctions between these religions. The event will start at 2:30 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship. Sobia and Usman will offer their remarks starting at 3 p.m. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. This promises to be an enlightening afternoon. Mark your calendar and join us at EUMC. Care of Our Planet Nov 20 November 20 is the 7th annual Global Day of Jewish Learning, a project of The Aleph Society. This year s theme is Under the Same Sky: The Earth is Full of Your Creations. SJC member Tom Mandel has organized an inventive program on this theme for us. The program starts at 3:30 p.m. at SJC on this day. We ll view videos from The Aleph Society. We ll discuss Jewish values and environmental and climate change challenges, including challenges associated with ocean-rise here in the beach communities of Sussex County. We ll take a look at environmental action projects undertaken by other synagogues, Jewish organizations, and interfaith collaborations. Mark your calendar and join us for this important event. Epworth Soup Kitchen Seaside s Team 6 Every six weeks, Seaside is responsible for Epworth United Methodist Church s Sunday afternoon soup kitchen. The next date will be Sunday, October 16. Join with other team members to plan, shop, prepare, cook, set up, clean up, and serve the hot meal that Sunday. Brandywine Village Network of Eastern Sussex County sponsored by Jewish Family Service (JFS) started last month and is reaching out to older adults - living in Rehoboth, Dewey, Harbeson, Long Neck, and Millsboro - needing assistance to age in place in their homes. The Village is also looking for volunteers to help its members with small home repairs, light household cleaning, seasonal yard work, running errands for and/ or with members, transportation, technology assistance, hanging pictures, mending buttons, changing smoke detector batteries, and more. Food, Clothing, Toiletries Needed Please help us stock SJC s storeroom with non-perishable food, gently used coats and clothing, or new toiletries for the needy. So many in our area are in need. Bring these items with you when you come to SJC and put them in the wicker basket at the top of the stairs. The Community Service Committee will pick up your donated items and deliver them to local service organizations. Thank you and please help! Helping Hands SJC offers support to members who are ill, grieving, homebound, or just need a helping hand. Available support includes sending cards, visiting people at home, preparing and delivering meals, picking up groceries and prescriptions, small repairs around the house, and running errands. Page 6 Seaside Jewish Community October 2016 Religious School News We had a great start to our religious school year! We welcomed four new students, and increased from three to four classes. The Alef class has our youngest students, and the Dalet class is for our oldest children who are focusing on their Bar and Bat Mitzvah training. Everyone in the Dalet class is excited to be studying for their special day. Additionally, the class is learning more about the Jewish community, locally and globally. The students are also focused on studying the various sects of Judaism. The Gimmel class learning Hebrew through the Amidah, studying about Israel, learning about major cycle events in Judaism, and studying Prophets and Writings. The Bet class is using the Hebrew primer in order to learn some basic Hebrew words and take the letters they have learned in order to combine syllables and sounds. Additionally, the focus this year is on Israel with special attention on Jerusalem. The Alef class is learning the letters of the Alef Bet, while learning the basics about God, the Bible, and Shabbat. SEASIDE JEWISH COMMUNITY HIGH HOLY DAY & SUKKOT FESTIVAL SERVICES 5777/2016 Location and Everyone Welcome The majority of SJC s High Holy Day services will take place at Epworth United Methodist Church (EUMC), 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE down the street from SJC s building at 18970 Holland Glade Road. Services are open to all who want to participate with the SJC community. Tickets or advance reservations for services are not required. Prayer Book (Machzor) and Service Leaders SJC is an independent, unaffiliated community of approximately 275 families consisting of approximately 425 individuals. Our services are egalitarian. For High Holy Days we use and provide the Hillel Machzor, On Wings of Awe, which has gender neutral language for God and transliteration of Hebrew. Rabbi Simcha Daniel Burstyn from Kibbutz Lotan in the Arava Valley Israel returns for his 7th year to co-lead with SJC s Religious Leader, Rabbi Beth Cohen. Advance RSVPs required by Oct 5. Use separate reservation form to RSVP. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Service Participation & Shofar Blowers SJC services are enriched by our congregants participation. We encourage members to read a prayer in English or lead a portion of the service. In the past members have read an English prayer, led the Service for taking out the Torah, chanted/read a portion of the Torah, or given a drash. The cacophony of sounds generated when several shofarot are sounded at the same time during the Shofar services is aweinspiring. We invite anyone who has a Shofar and knows how to blow the Tekiyah-Shevarim-Teruah calls to bring it and participate in the opening of the Rosh Hashanah evening service, the Shofar service on Rosh Hashanah day, and for the final blast at the end of Yom Kippur day. Logistics It takes a lot of work to ensure that SJC s High Holy Day services run smoothly. We need volunteers to help set-up and breakdown at the following times: Rosh Hashanah set up Sun afternoon Oct 2 at EUMC at 1 pm Rosh Hashanah break down Mon Oct 3 immediately after service ends Yom Kippur set up Tue morning Oct 11 at 9 am at EUMC Break-the-Fast set up Wed afternoon Oct 12 at 3:30 pm at EUMC. Yom Kippur break down Wed evening Oct 12 immediately after service ends Break-the-Fast clean up Wed evening Oct 12 at 8:00 pm at EUMC David Kaplan is managing the logistics and will need 10 12 volunteers for each set up and break down time slot.
