Samantha Hough will be baptized, confirmed and receive Holy Eucharist. Rich Ptacek and Shad Olson will be confirmed and receive the Eucharist. As Catholics, we recognize the baptism which people receive in other Christian churches, so we do not re-baptize. As these adults prepare for reception of the sacraments, please keep them in prayer. Preparation to receive the sacraments is not merely an intellectual exercise, but first of all a spiritual journey. The power of prayer is an essential component. Likewise, please lift up the children who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion on May 4 th. They are: Christina Bartlett Taya Bucholz Matthew Denekamp Gabrielle Holzer Dillon McCollar Sydney Bremer Leah Butolph Aidan Hedderman Dayten Johns Caleb Weishaar Helping children in Santa Luisa School While working at the seminary in Rome, I helped with an immersion trip to El Salvador. We visited Santa Luisa School in San Salvador, in the capital city. The school serves 550-600 poor children in a tough area. This Catholic School is run by religious sisters. Families are asked to pay what they can, but many have little or no money to spare. So the sisters rely on donations to keep the school running. When our group visited and told the sister who was the principal of the school that we had collected $2,500 to help support their school, she broke down in tears of joy. They had been worried about how to keep the doors open. Last year, parishioners from the Cathedral and Our Lady of the Black Hills sponsored over 225 children. Our parish sponsored children in the second grade in 2013, so this year we have the names of the same children (now in third grade). Jane Glanzer, an OLBH parishioner, is coordinating the sponsoring program for us. The cost to sponsor a child is $52/year. We have photos of 29 children. If you sponsored a child last year and would like to sponsor the same child, then please contact Larry Williamson to reserve the child s photo. You will need to fill out a FORM with the $52 donation. Make your check out to Our Lady of the Black Hills, and we will send one check to the SCOPE Foundation. S.C.O.P.E. is a 501(c)(3) public charity which was formed specifically to support the Santa Luisa School. For more information: www.scopefoundation.com/the-dilemma/laescuela-santa-luisa-san-salvador. Your commitment includes praying for that child during the school year. One of the best ways to help people out of poverty is a good education. It is so simple and yet such a blessing to these brothers and sisters of ours. In these more difficult economic times we need to be reminded often of those who have so much less. Our individual efforts combined become a powerful witness to our trust in God and our care for less fortunate. Peace in Christ, Fr. Steve Growing and celebrating through the teachings of Jesus Christ

CRS Rice Bowl Reflection: Malawi This week, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with the people of Malawi. We are encouraged to reflect on the Catholic social teaching principle, Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, and reminded that, just as He labored to create the universe, God sanctifies and calls us to work. Let us pray this week for our brothers and sisters in Malawi and all around the world, that we work with joy for God s greater glory. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Training Opportunity Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is the faith formation program for children in preschool-3rd grade in our parish. We have a wonderful training opportunity coming to our diocese beginning this summer and our parish is looking for individuals who would like to attend the CGS training. The course prepares the participant with a solid background in theological and pedagogical study of the work presented to the children. I welcome questions regarding CGS and this upcoming course. Please contact Jenny Scherr (jenny.scherr@olbh.org). New Narthex Rack CD Born Again- Faith Alone In one of his most focused talks to date, Stephen Ray discusses salvation, the authentic biblical understanding of being "born again", and how we are saved by faith, but not "faith alone". With great humor and doctrinal depth, he goes all the way back to Abraham to show that we are saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of us. Anniversary Fr. Gerald Scherer will observe his 60th Ordination Anniversary to the Priesthood on Sunday, May 4, 2014, 8 a.m. Mass, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rapid City. Reception to follow. Hospitality Ministers Needed for the 6:00 PM Sunday Mass Hospitality Ministers greet parishioners as they arrive for the weekend and Holy Day liturgies, select gift bearers, assist with the offertory collection during Mass, distribute bulletins after Mass, secure the collection money, and straighten worship aides in the pews after Mass. This Ministry is open to adults as well as high school students who work as a team with an adult. Time commitment: An hour in addition to Mass [approximately 30 minutes before and after Mass] Contact Sue or Steve Colgan for more information: sscolgan@rap.midco.net 394-5586 Celebrate God s Gift of Creation on April 6 The faith formation classes on Sunday, April 6, will be celebrating God s gift of creation and learning about our responsibility to care it. Bob and Pam Wentz will present a slide show of their recent trip to the Holy Land with Biship Gruss. All seniors (55+) are invited. Contemplative Prayer with the Bishop Bishop Robert Gruss, in his February column in the West River Catholic, invites us in this season of Lent to enter into the discipline of conversion. As a work in progress, moving in a positive direction Bishop Gruss calls us to a change of heart through fasting, prayer and almsgiving. For the past year Bishop Gruss has been teaching and encouraging us to spend time with God in silence, in contemplative prayer, because only then we can experience the full union with God. On Monday, March 31, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Blessed Sacrament Church, join the bishop for the third follow-up session of his original contemplative prayer retreat. The evening will include Bishop Gruss presentation, question and answer period and time for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament The event is free, but a free-will offering will be taken to cover expenses. For detailed information see Blessed Sacrament Church website. Rachel s Vineyard Retreat A Rachel s Vineyard Retreat will be held April 25-27, 2014 in Rapid City, SD. The confidential retreats are for those who are spiritually hurting after an abortion and want to experience the healing love of Christ. The cost for the retreat is $100.00 for meals, a private room, and all retreat materials. Financial assistance is available. Registration deadline is Monday, April 21st! For more information or to register, contact Carol Kling at 605-374-5639 or ckling@sdplains.com. Centennial Committee Meeting The Centennial Committee will meet April 3 at 5:30 PM in the library to discuss the OLBH Centennial celebration preparations; all are welcome. CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES PALM SUNDAY BRUNCH Catholic Social Services will host the Annual Palm Sunday Brunch on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 12 Noon to 2:00 PM at the Best Western Ramkota Convention Center, 2111 North LaCrosse Street in Rapid City. Father Larry Snyder, the keynote speaker, is President of Catholic Charities USA, the national office of more than 2,766 local Catholic Charity Agencies and Institutions nationwide, that provide assistance to more than 10-million people annually. Catholic Social Services in Rapid City provides services to individuals and families of all faiths living in western South Dakota, on a sliding fee basis. The Palm Sunday Brunch helps support our programs. Brunch tickets are complimentary, with a free will offering requested at the Brunch. Please contact Catholic Social Services to secure your FREE tickets. All seats are reserved. Please call 348-6086 to reserve your complimentary brunch tickets. Perpetual Adoration at the Cathedral The Cathedral is beginning Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, April 21 (Easter Monday). The participation of Catholics throughout Rapid City and Piedmont is essential. You are encouraged to also join 500 Catholics. It is important to have people committed to being present to be assured someone is present before the Lord all the time. The goal is to have three persons for each hour of the day. Having three persons each hour of each day of the week means we need 500 Catholic faithful to commit to one hour of adoration each week. You are encouraged to look at your schedule and consider this gift; a gift to the Lord, a gift to you, a gift for our parishes and diocese. The Lord will bless your sacrifice. There are three ways that you can sign up for a time to become one of the 500 Catholics participating in this great adventure in prayer and deepening relationship with the Lord. For those with internet, you can go to the Cathedral web site (www.cathedralolph.org/adoration) or use (www.500catholics.com) and enter your name, email address and phone number and select an hour in the week that will work for you. Your information will be confidential and the only persons who will receive your name and phone number will be the other two people you are praying with during your hour. The web site also has a calendar that lists the hours of each week and how many (not the names) are signed up for each hour. If you do not use the internet, you can call the Cathedral rectory (342-0507) and sign up by giving us your name, and phone number. Your information will be confidential. Your name and phone number will only be shared with the other two people who are praying with you during your selected hour. Leaving Iowa St. Thomas More High School presents Leaving Iowa: A Comedy About Family Vacations, on Friday and Saturday, April 4th and 5th at 7:30 PM on the Terra Sancta stage. Reserved seat tickets are available by calling Shawna at 923-2545, or you may purchase at the door. Freshly baked unleavened bread at Eucharist The official Church guidelines for Mass states: The bread for celebrating the Eucharist must be made only from wheat, must be recently baked, and according to the ancient tradition, must be unleavened. The meaning of the sign demands that... [it] truly have the appearance of food (General Instruction for the Roman Missal, 320). In keeping with this directive, our parish uses freshly baked unleavened bread made only from wheat.
