Make the Most of Lent This Year (Part 1) L ent is an annual opportunity for us to check up on the state of our spiritual health. Here are 40 practical suggestions to wake up your spiritual life and to put more meaning into your daily life. Make use of this list as you see fit, realizing that if you miss a few along the way, that s all right your intent to make this Lent meaningful is what counts the most. The second 20 (Part 2) will appear later. Change the Channel: Ash Wednesday signals a major change in how you ll live the next 40 days. Signal that change by skipping TV all day, at least for one day during Lent. Feed Your Soul: Many people today are overworked and under nurtured. Schedule weekly dates to do something fulfilling alone; i.e., browse an antique shop, listen to a favorite CD, read a good article, watch an educational program, write daily reflections in a journal. Start today. Eat Light: Cut back on the size of your meals today, and especially on the other Fridays of Lent. And give the money saved on food to charities that feed hungry people. Be a Simon of Cyrene: Simon helped Jesus carry His cross. Today, offer to help a neighbor or a family member, with a tough chore. The help can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Show that you care. Worship with Friends and Family: Be attentive to the readings, songs, and prayers at Mass. Discuss the sermon or homily with your family. Read the Bulletin weekly. Avoid Gossip: Avoid situations that tempt you to talk negatively about others. When talking about others, say nice things, or say nothing at all. Send a Message: Write a letter to someone from whom you re estranged, seeking to re-establish your friendship. A phone call or an email can do miracles, too. If you need to, apologize and ask forgiveness. If appropriate, offer your own forgiveness. Give It Up: Pick one habit that drags you down or keeps you from living fully. Just for today, let go of it. Fill that emptiness with something positive. Share a Meal: Make a meal to bring to a shut-in neighbor or friend, or invite someone to a meal at your home. Rise and Pray: Get up half an hour early today and spend the time in prayer. You can meditate, say memorized prayers, read the Bible, listen to inspirational music, write in a journal, or simply watch a beautiful sunrise. You can also stop by the Church and spend time alone with Jesus. Be Complimentary: Compliment someone on a job well done. Look around your life for an unsung hero, and thank that person for his/her diligence, competence, and dedication. Clear Away Clutter: Sometimes, outward messiness in our lives reflects an inner clutter. Clean up a junk drawer, a messy closet or counter, or piled-up mail. Then appreciate a job well done. Drop Your Worries: Think of the day ahead. Whenever a worry comes to mind, imagine placing it in God s hands. Proceed through your day with a lightened heart. Give the Shirt Off Your Back: Look in your closet for good clothes you no longer wear. Donate them to someone who could use them well. Keep It in Mind: Memorize a short phrase or passage from Scripture, and repeat it to yourself during the day. Use it as a Grace at your dinner table, and share it with others. Skip the Sweets: Forego sweets and candy today, but pay attention to the taste of what you do eat. Ask God to fill the hunger of your heart. Tune into a Station: Pick one of the Stations of the Cross (Jesus accepts His cross, Jesus falls, Jesus dies on the cross, etc.), meditating on how it relates to your life. Remember Jesus love and courage, and learn from Him. Take a Stand: Write a letter to a public official or a newspaper or magazine, stating your views on a moral issue that concerns you or your community. Send a call for a conscientious change. Stretch Your Mind: Read a book, watch a good movie, or see a play. Try on a new perspective or view of life. God bless you, Father Julian
