ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS Sharing Christ with the World Evangelizing Joyfully with Michael Dopp An evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral! Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium. Every Christian is called to be actively engaged in evangelization, but where does one begin? What is true evangelization and why is it important? Hear from Michael Dopp, founder of the New Evangelization Summit on what it takes to evangelize in today s culture. Evangelizing means sharing Christ with the world in every human situation and we are all called to share the good news! Learn how to develop a missionary zeal to live out our baptismal vocation. Experience joy in your heart as we await the birth of our Saviour during this Advent season. True joy leads to evangelization. Join us on Thursday, December 13, 7-9 pm at the John Paul II Pastoral Centre, Vancouver. Free Admission (free-will offering taken during the event). https://rcav.org/event/sharing-christ-with-the-world Archbishop s Annual Mass for Life Join us as we celebrate life on Friday, December 28, at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Vancouver. Rosary begins at 11:30 am and Mass is at 12:10 pm. Save the Date - Restore the Beauty: Women s Conference In place of our annual women s retreat, we ve decided to have a women s conference next year. Our normal retreat date coincides with Easter, so we were unable to find workable dates at Rockridge Canyon. We thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to host a larger event locally, but with the same powerful and beautiful elements of our women s retreat. A venue and location in Surrey makes it easily accessible for more women to attend and experience this beautiful event. Event will be Friday, May 3, 7-10 pm and Saturday, May 4, 9 am-9 pm. More details coming soon! www.liferestoration.ca/womensconference/ FRIENDLY REMINDERS DONATIONS TO CAPITAL CAMPAIGN As we approach the end of the 2018 calendar year, please take some time to consider making a year-end donation to support the renewal of our parish buildings. For many, there may be an opportunity to have your donation matched by your employer, effectively doubling the amount the parish receives! Please enquire with your employer to request the appropriate forms. All donations, made by you, received on or before December 31, 2018 qualifies for a 2018 donation tax receipt. Please feel welcome to contact the Parish Office, with any questions you may have about donating to campaign. DONATIONS TO PROJECT ADVANCE 2018 We would like to remind all those who have made pledges to Project Advance to please remit their donations either to the Parish Office or to the Project Advance Office of the Archdiocese of Vancouver as soon as possible. In order to qualify for a 2018 tax receipt: Donations charged to credit cards should be made online thru the parish website, www.corpuschristiparish.ca then click on Donate to Project Advance under Important Links or thru the Archdiocese of Vancouver website www.rcav.org/donate. If you are submitting your pledge forms to the parish, please do so by December 11 (as they are processed by the Project Advance Office twice a month). Donations paid in cash or cheque should be submitted to the parish office before December 12. DONATIONS TO CORPUS CHRISTI IN GENERAL All Donations to Corpus Christi Parish (including your weekly contribution envelopes) should be received by the Parish Office by December 31, 2018 in order to receive a tax receipt for 2018. This is a requirement of Canada Revenue Agency. Any donations received after that will be credited towards 2019. Also, please inform the Parish Office of any address change to reflect the correct address in the tax receipt. Thank you! Thank you for your generosity! Stewardship Reflections But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. LUKE 21:28 We celebrate Advent each year in preparation of the birth of Jesus, His first coming, as we await his second coming. In this Advent season, use the sacrament of Reconciliation to strengthen your relationship with Jesus. It s never too late. Copyright 2018 Archdiocese of St. Louis

1 st Sunday of Advent Everyone will, I m sure, remember the ME25 survey that we did last June. Then Al Winseman, from the Gallup Research company was here in the parish in October to help us go through the data, basically what you communicated to me, what your feedback was. One of the engagement items that you, the parishioners of Corpus Christi, communicated was that we were lower than the average parish on recognition. The Senior Management Team that works with me has been working on ways in which we can improve and increase recognition here at Corpus Christi. Many months ago someone, who is not a parishioner of Corpus Christi, gave a donation to the parish. Along with the Senior Management Team it was decided that we would have a Welcoming Booth built and installed in the Vestibule of the Church. The purpose of the booth is not just to be a nice piece of furniture, but a statement that we at Corpus Christi are prepared to welcome people. So, when someone comes to the parish, and they have never been here before, they can go to the Welcoming Booth and get information about the parish. If someone is a new Catholic, they can go the booth and find out what is happening in the parish; if someone is a regular Catholic they can do the same. It will take some time to have the Welcoming Booth occupied for each Mass, but we are working towards this. If you are interested in being a person who welcomes others into Corpus Christi please let us let me know. This is a very good way to steward our gifts of reaching out to others by way of making them welcomed in this parish. This Sunday we begin a new Liturgical (Church) Year, with this first Sunday of Advent. We are not in the Christmas season (yet!), but the season of Advent. It is important that we Catholics and disciples of Jesus Christ remember this and try to live like we are preparing to celebrate the arrival of the promised King of Kings. You may have seen infographic last week that in many ways said it so well: A thousand times in history a baby has become a king; But only once in history did a King become a baby. So it is important that we prepare ourselves spiritually for his arrival, as if it were the very first time. 1) Try to go to an extra Mass during the weekday; 2) Receive the sacrament of Penance during this time of the year; 3) Spend 15 minutes a day in quiet prayer; 4) Try to read the daily Readings of Mass. There is a free app for this: Living With Christ (Android and Apple devices); 5) Try to come up with one (1) thing to work at an area to grow in and offer it as a sacrifice to God. It could be anything from going to bed on time, to striving to be, and look, more cheerful, or to not having to have the last word in a conversation. Focus, think about it every day, renew the resolution and keep at it. This is a great way to prepare for Christ s birth. Here is a great quote from Pope Pius XI: The Rosary is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin... If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors. United in Prayer Fr. Hamilton

The First Week of Advent As we begin Advent, we light one candle in the midst of all the darkness in our lives and in the world. It symbolizes our longing, our desire, our hope. Three advents or comings shape our desire. We want to be renewed in a sense that Jesus came to save us from our sin and death. We want to experience his coming to us now, in our everyday lives, to help us live our lives with meaning and purpose. And we want to prepare for his coming to meet us at the end of our lives on this earth. So, we begin with our longing, our desire and our hope. When we wake up, each day this week, we could light that candle, just by taking a few moments to focus. We could pause for a minute at the side of our bed, or while putting on our slippers or our robe, and light an inner candle. Who among us doesn't have time to pause for a moment? We could each find our own way to pray something like this: Lord, the light I choose to let into my life today is based on my trust in you. It is a weak flame, but I so much desire that it dispel a bit more darkness today. Today, I just want to taste the longing I have for you as I go to the meeting this morning, carry out the responsibilities of my work, face the frustration of some difficult relationships. Let this candle be my reminder today of my hope in your coming. Each morning this week, that momentary prayer might get more specific, as it prepares us for the day we will face. And as we head to work, walk to a meeting, rush through lunch, take care of errands, meet with people, pick up the phone to return some calls, answer e-mail, return home to prepare a meal, listen to the ups and downs of our loved ones' day, we can take brief moments to relate our desire for the three comings of the Lord to our life. If our family has an Advent wreath, or even if it doesn't, we could pray together before our evening meal. As we light the first candle on the wreath, or as we simply pause to pray together our normal grace. Then, as we begin to eat, we can invite each other, including the children, to say something about what it means today to light this first candle. Perhaps we could ask a different question each night, or ask about examples from the day. How am I getting in touch with the longing within me? How did I prepare today? What does it mean to prepare to celebrate his coming 2,000 years ago? How can we prepare to experience his coming into our lives this year? What does it mean for us now, with our world involved in so much conflict? How are we being invited to trust more deeply? How much more do we long for his coming to us, in the midst of the darkness in our world? In what ways can we renew our lives so we might be prepared to greet him when he comes again? Our evening meal could be transformed this week, if we could shape some kind of conversation together that lights a candle of anticipation in our lives. Don't worry if everyone isn't good at this kind of conversation at first. We can model it, based on our momentary pauses throughout each day, in which we are discovering deeper and deeper desires, in the midst of our everyday lives. And every night this week, we can pause briefly, perhaps as we sit for a minute at the edge of the bed. We can be aware of how that one, small candle's worth of desire brought light into this day. And we can give thanks. Going to bed each night this week with some gratitude is part of the preparation for growing anticipation and desire. Come, Lord Jesus! Come and visit your people. We await your coming. Come, O Lord. Daily Advent Prayer Father, all powerful and ever-living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. When he humbled himself to come among us, he fulfilled the plan you formed long ago and opened for us the way to salvation. Now we watch for the day, hoping that the salvation promised us will be ours when Christ will come again in his glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels in heaven we proclaim your glory and join in their unending hymn of praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/collaborativeministry/advent/firstweek.html
