Which contrasts with how the word community is understood in the world we live in. Community is a nice word: community implies a sort of a social club; a group of people it can be pleasant to do things with, but who we can certainly choose to walk away from if it stops being pleasant, or convenient In a Christian vision we don t choose our community: it s chosen for us by God. We re called to community, rather than choosing it. And it s not there for our satisfaction but for a mission for proclaiming and enfleshing the Gospel. It s not there to be a clubhouse; it s there to be a lighthouse. To belong to a Christian community is about embracing a commitment to that community even when that isn t convenient, to remember that it s not so much about what we get from it, but rather what we bring to it.

3 3 RICHARD ROHR S MEDITATION: THE CROSS The cross is a perfect metaphor for what we mean by Everything Belongs. The rational, calculating mind can never fully understand the mystery of the cross. These insights can only be discovered through contemplative seeing: God is to be found in all things, even and most especially in the painful, tragic, and sinful things, exactly where we do not want to look for God. The crucifixion of the God-Man is at the same moment the worst thing in human history and the best thing in human history. Human existence is neither perfectly consistent (as rational and control-needy people usually demand it be), nor is it incoherent chaos (what cynics, agnostics, and unaware people expect it to be). Instead, life has a cruciform pattern. All of life is a coincidence of opposites (St Bonaventure), a collision of cross-purposes; we are all filled with contradictions needing to be reconciled. This is the precise burden and tug of all human existence. The price that we pay for holding together these opposites is invariably some form of crucifixion. Jesus himself was archetypally hung between a good thief and a bad thief, between heaven and earth, holding together both his humanity and his divinity, a male body with a feminine soul. He was a Jewish believer who forgave and loved everyone else. He reconciled all things in himself (Ephesians 2:14-18). Jesus really is an icon of what Carl Jung called the whole-making instinct. The demand for the perfect is the enemy of the possible good. Be peace and do justice, but don t expect perfection in yourself or the world. Perfectionism contributes to intolerance and judgmentalism and makes ordinary love largely impossible. Jesus was an absolute realist, patient with the ordinary, the broken, the weak, and those who failed. Following him is not a salvation scheme or a means of creating some ideal social order as much as it is a vocation to share the fate of God for the life of the World, and to love the way that God loves which we cannot do by ourselves. The doctrine, folly, and image of the cross is the great clarifier and truth-speaker for all of human history. We can rightly speak of being saved by it. Jesus crucified and resurrected is the whole pattern revealed, named, effected, and promised for human history. Jesus did not come to found a separate religion as much as he came to present a universal message of vulnerability and foundational unity that is necessary for all religions, the human soul, and history itself to survive. Thus Christians can rightly call Jesus the Saviour of the World (John 4:42), but no longer in the competitive and imperialistic way that they have usually presented him. By very definition, vulnerability and unity do not compete or dominate. The cosmic Christ is no threat to anything but separateness, illusion, domination, and the imperial ego. In that sense, Jesus, the Christ, is the ultimate threat, but first of all to Christians themselves. 5 5 The Commissioning of Our Bells we will have the first ringing of the bells at the 6pm Mass NEXT Sunday 17th September (followed by a chance to see the bells being rung) will be followed by a parish supper in St Brigid s Hall. and we will have the formal dedication of the ring of bells by Bishop Peter on Sunday 12th November at the 6pm Mass (again followed by a chance to see the bells being rung). This As Sunday 12th November was the day already scheduled for the annual visit by the choir from St Francis of Assisi at Paddington the choir will now sing at the 6pm Mass rather than the 10:15am Mass so that we don t have two major events on the same day. Listening, like other skills, needs to be practiced and developed or it will not improve. Meditation offers an opportunity to listen deeply and thus become sensitive to the presence of the Spirit of God in your life. 9 9 EPISCOPAL DIALOGUE 2017 Bishop Peter A. Comensoli (Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay) and Bishop Peter Stuart, Assistant Bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle will engage in an Episcopal Dialogue this year. The topic is: What unites us is much greater than what divides us (Pope St John XIII) In your view what are the areas of faith and life in which we, as Anglicans and Catholics, are most united, and in which are we most divided? And is what divides us greater than what unites us? The evening will be held at Christ Church Anglican Church, Mann St, Gosford on Tuesday 26th September at 7.30pm (concluding by 9pm). FROM SOCIAL JUSTICE: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - VINNIES HOME VISITATION For a number of years, the wonderful people from the Lindfield Conference of St Vincent de Paul, with the help of volunteers from the parent community at Holy Family School, have been visiting disadvantaged people in their homes in the Waterloo area of inner Sydney. If you have some time to spare, your help would be greatly appreciated. The commitment is around 4-5 hours, starting around 9.30am and finishing around 1.30pm, 4 or 5 times a year (on Thursdays). Visits are schedule for outside of school holidays. There is also a need for volunteers during the school holidays if you are able to help then. You will be trained by Vinnies and an experienced person will accompany you. Two people go on every visit. You might help with budgeting, providing grocery vouchers, referrals or taking orders for furniture or clothes from the local Vinnies store; often people are just looking for companionship and a supportive ear. It is a privilege to be invited into another person s home and their life when they are in need your companionship will be very much appreciated. 11 11 (continued from page 12): the mythical gods of old that we have first rights to sleep with everyone and that the whole world is really ours; if we sense within us the ecstasy of fulfillment that is inside of God, is it any wonder that we tend to excess and addictions, that we would want to swallow all the food, drink, and pleasure in the world and do nothing other than drink in its enjoyment; and if we sense that we are godly in nature, is it any wonder that we fill so easily with hatred and murderous`s rage when we are slighted or ignored? We see this crystal-clear in some of its higher expressions; for example, in our experience of creativity. Why do so many great artists have such a temptation towards atheism or various forms of idolatry? It s no great mystery. The greater the talent, the greater the work produced, the greater the artist, the more divine energy that seeps through, the easier it is to mistake the image of God for its reality which is always the definition of idolatry. The heart has its reasons. So too do pride, idolatry, lust, greed, anger, and concupiscence. God built us in a rather unsafe way. To walk the earth like gods and goddesses is, in fact, a dangerous business. Fortunately God knew this before she made us and, like an understanding mum who has mused on the origins of her children s faults, still took that risk and now blushes just a little as she looks at us and our foibles and faults. 12 12 REFLECTING ON THIS SUNDAY S SCRIPTURES.. Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Gospel). FAULTS OF THE PARENTS IN THE CHILDREN A couple of years ago, I was at the home of some friends for a dinner. During the meal, their kids, all quite young, had been rather loud, cranky, self-absorbed, and unmannered, as is the way sometimes with young children and with the ups and downs of the dinner table. After the meal, when they d left to play in an adjoining room, the mother, tired and frustrated from her battle of wills with them, made this comment: Sometimes when I look at my kids, I blush with a kind of shame because I see myself in their faults! I know exactly from where they get all of that! It s in their genes. I see my faults inside of them. The good thing is that, seeing this, triggers a real compassion in me. I want to hug them and apologize! There s a wonderful theology in that observation. The way she felt, looking at her children and their faults, is, I suspect, the way God must feel as he looks at us, his kids, with our unmannered faults and our self-absorption. God is like that mother. No doubt God experiences the same frustration in his battle of wills with us, but, no doubt too, God fills with compassion and understanding in the face of our faults, blushing with a little shame for how he made us. Like that mother, God sees exactly where all of this comes from and who and what is responsible for those congenital propensities. Simply said, though a lot of nuance is immediately needed once it is said, so many of our faults stem from the way God made us, namely, from the divine fire, divine appetites, divine energy, and godly grandiosity that God has put inside us. Our faults take their root there. That can sound like blasphemy, but it s quite the opposite really. It s not an attempt to blame God for our faults, but rather an effort to explain, more deeply, why we are as we are, why we have tendencies towards sinful and destructive things, why life is so infinitely complex, and, most important of all, why God was not a stingy, smallminded, small-hearted, petty, defensive creator when she made us. When God made us, she didn t play it safe, making us small, stupid, mechanical, easy to control, low-risk projects. God rolled the dice and risked the highest possible stakes, love and freedom. God gave us as much as she could give without making us, ourselves, gods and goddesses (the one thing God can t do). God made us godly, almost divine, and that has consequences. God is infinite, the creator of everything, self-sufficient Being, and Being who, in a manner of speaking, owns everything that is all beauty, all love, all truth, all existence, and even all pleasure. That s a lot to carry without losing one s balance. God never loses her balance, but we, who have been given so much divine dignity and energy, often do. And that s the problem: If we sense within us a divine likeness, is it any wonder that sometimes we inflate with grandiosity and strut with pride; if we sense inside us infinite love, is it any wonder that we sometimes fill with lust and want to make love to the whole world; if we sense within us God s holding all of being in existence, is it any wonder that we are often greedy and jealous, convinced like (continued on page 11 )
