Our Savior Lutheran Church Mankato, Minnesota The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost October 1, 2017 Pre Service Music: All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Brass Greeting and Annoucements Hymn of Invocation: Praise Be to Christ LSB 538 1 Praise be to Christ in whom we see The image of the Father shown, The firstborn Son revealed and known, The truth and grace of deity; Through whom creation came to birth, Whose fingers set the stars in place, The unseen pow rs, and this small earth, The furthest bounds of time and space. 2 Praise be to Him whose sov reign sway And will upholds creation s plan; Who is, before all worlds began And when our world has passed away: Lord of the Church, its life and head, Redemption s price and source and theme, Alive, the firstborn from the dead, To reign as all-in-all supreme. 3 Praise be to Him who, Lord Most High, The fullness of the Godhead shares; And yet our human nature bears, Who came as man to bleed and die. And from His cross there flows our peace Who chose for us the path He trod, That so might sins and sorrows cease And all be reconciled to God. 1984 Hope Publishing Co. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100010342. Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Exhortation P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Confession of Sins P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Forgiveness of our Sin (Declaration of Grace) P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen. Lord, Have Mercy! (Kyrie) 2

This is the Feast 3

Greeting and Prayer of the Day (Salutation and Collect) P Let us pray. Almighty God, You exalted Your Son to the place of all honor and authority. Enlighten our minds by Your Holy Spirit that, confessing Jesus as Lord, we may be led into all truth; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 18:1 4, 25 32 The word of the LORD came to me: What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children s teeth are set on edge? As I live, declares the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die. Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not just. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, The way of the Lord is not just. O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? 5

Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Reading from a New Testament Letter (Epistle): Philippians 2:1 4, 14 18 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel: Matthew 21:23 27 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter. 6

When [Jesus] entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority? Jesus answered them, I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man? And they discussed it among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him? But if we say, From man, we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet. So they answered Jesus, We do not know. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Children's Message Hymn of the Day: The Day Is Surely Drawing Near LSB 508 (verses 1,2,6,7) 1 The day is surely drawing near When Jesus, God s anointed, In all His power shall appear As judge whom God appointed. Then fright shall banish idle mirth, And flames on flames shall ravage earth As Scripture long has warned us. 2 The final trumpet then shall sound And all the earth be shaken, And all who rest beneath the ground Shall from their sleep awaken. But all who live will in that hour, By God s almighty, boundless pow r, Be changed at His commanding. 7

6 May Christ our intercessor be And through His blood and merit Read from His book that we are free With all who life inherit. Then we shall see Him face to face, With all His saints in that blest place Which He has purchased for us. 7 O Jesus Christ, do not delay, But hasten our salvation; We often tremble on our way In fear and tribulation. O hear and grant our fervent plea: Come, mighty judge, and set us free From death and ev ry evil. Public domain Sermon Confession of Faith (Apostles' Creed) C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Prayer of the Church Offering 8

Preface Proper Preface P It is truly good, right, and salutary... evermore praising You and saying: Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) 9

Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord The Lord s Peace (Pax Domini) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. 10

Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) Distribution Hymns: At the Name of Jesus LSB 512 1 At the name of Jesus Ev ry knee shall bow, Ev ry tongue confess Him King of glory now. Tis the Father s pleasure We should call Him Lord, Who from the beginning Was the mighty Word. 2 At His voice creation Sprang at once to sight, All the angel faces, All the hosts of light, Thrones and bright dominions, Stars upon their way, All the heav nly orders In their great array. 11

3 Humbled for a season, To receive a name From the lips of sinners Unto whom He came, Faithfully He bore it Spotless to the last, Brought it back victorious When from death He passed; 4 Bore it up triumphant With its human light, Through all ranks of creatures To the central height, To the throne of Godhead, To the Father s breast, Filled it with the glory Of that perfect rest. 5 In your hearts enthrone Him; There let Him subdue All that is not holy, All that is not true: Crown Him as your captain In temptation s hour; Let His will enfold you In its light and pow r. 6 Christians, this Lord Jesus Shall return again In His Father s glory, With His angel train; For all wreaths of empire Meet upon His brow, And our hearts confess Him King of glory now. 12

7 Glory then to Jesus, Who, the Prince of light, To a world in darkness Brought the gift of sight; Praise to God the Father; In the Spirit s love Praise we all together Him who reigns above. Public domain Chief of Sinners Though I Be LSB 611 1 Chief of sinners though I be, Jesus shed His blood for me, Died that I might live on high, Lives that I might never die. As the branch is to the vine, I am His, and He is mine. 2 Oh, the height of Jesus love, Higher than the heav ns above, Deeper than the depths of sea, Lasting as eternity! Love that found me wondrous thought! Found me when I sought Him not. 3 Only Jesus can impart Balm to heal the wounded heart, Peace that flows from sin forgiv n, Joy that lifts the soul to heav n, Faith and hope to walk with God In the way that Enoch trod. 4 Chief of sinners though I be, Christ is all in all to me; All my wants to Him are known, All my sorrows are His own. He sustains the hidden life Safe with Him from earthly strife. 13

5 O my Savior, help afford By Your Spirit and Your Word! When my wayward heart would stray, Keep me in the narrow way; Grace in time of need supply While I live and when I die. Public domain Dismissal (Nunc Dimittis) Post-Communion Prayer (Collect) A Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 14

The Lord s Blessing (Benediction) P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you And be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. Closing Hymn: Father Most Holy LSB 504 1 Father most holy, merciful, and tender; Jesus, our Savior, with the Father reigning; Spirit of comfort, advocate, defender, Light never waning; 2 Trinity blessèd, unity unshaken, Goodness unbounded, very God of heaven, Light of the angels, joy of those forsaken, Hope of all living, 3 Maker of all things, all Thy creatures praise Thee; All for Thy worship were and are created; Now, as we also worship Thee devoutly, Hear Thou our voices. 4 Lord God Almighty, unto Thee be glory, One in three persons, over all exalted! Glory we offer, praise Thee and adore Thee, Now and forever.
