THE EPISTLE St. Philip s Episcopal Church 342 East Wood Street Palatine, Illinois 60067-5357 (847) 358-0615 www.stphilipspalatine.org Fr. Jim Stanley, Priest-in-Charge Dear St. Philip s family, There s still some summer left to us and no doubt, some of you are looking for something to read by the pool, on the back porch or on the train to work. Every now and then I will let you know what s on MY reading list, but I d also like to make recommendations of past favorites. Here are a few you might find nourishing: 1. The Ragamuffin Gospel; Abba s Child; and Lion and Lamb all by Brennan Manning. Each book builds on and borrows from the others. Ragamuffin was literally a lifesaver for me when I first read it in the mid 90s. 2. With Christ in the School of Prayer, by Andrew Murray. Though written in the 19 th century and containing fairly patriarchal language, this is still an essential for any Christian wishing to develop a deeper life of individual and corporate prayer. It s probably free on Kindle.
3. Simply Christian, by N.T. Wright. Wright is one of the greatest biblical scholars of our time; yet his books on a popular track are accessible, inspiring and thought-provoking. 4. Is Jesus a Republican or a Democrat?, by Dr. Tony Campolo. Tony is a sociologist, a Baptist pastor, and thinker who wrote this in the 90s. As our election approaches, it s worth a re-visit! 5. Kingdom, Grace and Judgment, by Fr. Robert Farrar Capon. This is a longer, heavier read that makes sense of the harder sayings of Jesus. Capon writes with a wicked sense of humor. I m sorry, friends, to have excluded fiction! I m afraid I m not as much of a fiction reader as I ought to be. In the meantime, God bless you all and happy reading! Do let me know if you enjoy any of these! Under the mercy, Fr. by Chris Moore Chris Moore s free adult coloring camps were very popular. We had coloring pages, markers and colored pencils available to use and people were also welcome to bring their own supplies. Bob Guretz from the Sunshine and the Sundowner s AA groups (that meet in our building) says that anyone who has a desire to stop drinking alcohol is warmly welcomed to attend any of their meetings on Tuesdays from 7:00 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.
article and photographs by Jack Notzen A big thank you to Kim McDonald for leading the discussion of The Light Between Oceans for the St. Philip s Book Club on July 18 th. The August 22 nd meeting of the Book Club will be discussing A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. A Man Called Ove is a genuine get off my damn lawn book, lashing out at all the yuppies and self-employed slacks that are moving into his neighborhood, ignoring his clearly marked signs and regulations. He stomps his feet, fumes, and rages at a whole world gone to pot. A Man Called Ove gives us some insights into one man s life s journey that results in the creation of a human being such as this. Jack Notzen will be leading the discussion due to his vast experience on the subject matter! SAVE THE DATE by Lisa Gillette and Mike Zawacke The St. Philip s Church Auction will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016. Please plan to join the parish for this evening of fellowship and fundraising. We need you and your friends to make this a successful event. Additional details will be made available as the date approaches.
Rest in Peace: The Rt. Rev. Edmond Lee Browning, 24th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church (Excerpt from the Neva Rae Fox Episcopal Church Public Affairs email dated Monday, July 11, 2016) The Rt. Rev. Edmond Lee Browning, the 24th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, died on July 11, 2016. He was 87 years old and was living in Oregon. Bishop Browning served as Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church 1986-1997. Bishop Browning s election as Presiding Bishop in 1986 was seen as a reflection of the Church s broadening diversity due to his extensive international and multi-cultural experience. Bishop Browning hoped to encourage a growing awareness of diversity in the Church. He was well-known for his quote, no outcasts in the church. The Episcopal Church is faithfully seeking to truly become, a house of prayer for all people, as Jesus said quoting the Hebrew prophets, and that is greatly the case because Presiding Bishop Browning taught us that the church must be a place where there are no outcasts, commented the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, the 27th Presiding Bishop. That enduring legacy is still helping to set many a captive free. It is evidence that God is not finished with us yet, for every once in a while spiritual giants still walk among us as living reminders. One of those reminders was Edmund Lee Browning, 24th Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church. Well done good and faithful servant. May you rest in peace and rise in glory. 10
