A Month of Parables Then Jesus disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak in parables, so that 'looking they may not perceive, and listening they may not understand.' " ~ Luke 8:9-10 This year in Lent we will be focusing on some of Jesus parables. Parables tell us about the Kingdom of God. Sometimes they even tell us about the character of God. On Wednesday nights in Lent the Confirmation students will be introducing a parable to the congregation during worship. Then, after worship, they will gather with their mentors and dig deeper into those five parables. We will be thinking about their meaning and wondering together what they teach us. You are, as always, invited to join us every Wednesday in Lent in the Fellowship Hall for lively conversation and learning. We ll begin on March 13. In preparation for the parable study in Lent, I want to invite you to spend all of February thinking about parables in general. There are many parables in the Gospels. Some are shorter, like the Parable of the Lost Coin. Some are longer, like the Parable of the Good Samaritan. None of them will take you more than a few minutes to read. To make this exercise easier we will post a parable on our Facebook page each day. The list of readings for each day are on page five. Most of the parables come from the Gospel of Luke, with a few additions from the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. They are in the order you will find them in your Bible. It may be tempting to read more than one, but if you can resist, try to read just one. 2 Spend a few minutes reading a parable in the morning and see how it colors your day. Read a parable before bed and see what comes of it the following day. If the parables reveal the secrets of the kingdom of God, then four weeks may reveal a great deal to us. If you are someone who journals, you might write your observations down. You might share Memorials what you notice with a good friend or family member. You can even make a comment on the parable posts on Trinity's Facebook page. There s no wrong way to do this. I look forward to hearing what you find as you journey through the parables. I am hopeful that I will hear lively conversation about parables on Sunday mornings. Mostly I hope this practice enriches your engagement with the Word of God and helps you to better imagine the kingdom of God.
