Williams (1872-1958) Rise, heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise without delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise with him may'st rise; That, as his death calcined thee to dust, his life may make thee gold, and much more, just. Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part with all thy art. The Cross taught all wood to resound his name, who bore the same. His stretched sinews taught all strings, what key is the best to celebrate this most high day. Consort both heart and lute, and twist a song pleasant and long; or since all music is but three parts vied and multiplied, O let thy blessed Spirit bear a part, and make up our defects with his sweet art. Church School Crosses During Holy Week we reflected on the Diocesan theme of becoming prayerful, confident disciples in daily life and using the Lord s Prayer as the basis of each of the daily Addresses. We are very grateful to the church schools which made our Stations of the Cross, which are displayed in the aisles. The children also put together prayers and questions about the line of the Lord s Prayer they used in the making of their cross. The participating schools are: St Mary s CE Primary School Chiddingfold, Riverview CE Primary School Ewell, St Paul s CE Primary Addlestone, Frimley CE Junior School, Holy Trinity Pewley Down School Guildford, St Giles CE Infant School Ashtead, Busbridge CE Junior School Godalming, Send CE Primary School, St Matthews CE Infant School Downside, The Weald CE Primary School Beare Green, St Peter s CE Primary School Farnham and Horsell CE Junior School. Haydn s Creation - Saturday 27 April 7.30pm We are thrilled that Hannah Dienes-Williams (one of our girl choristers) and her friend, Max Todes (also 17 years old), are organising a performance of Haydn s Creation on Saturday 27 April 2019. It is sure to be a memorable and exciting concert. Unfortunately ticket sales are currently low, and so the viability of the event is under serious consideration. Hannah says: Guildford Cathedral is a place which is, and always has been, extremely close to my heart. Having grown up engulfed in cathedral life, I ve had many an opportunity to see how it deeply benefits and affects worshippers, be they regular or visiting. I myself have been lucky enough to sing in the Cathedral Girls Choir since the age of 9, and music making continues to be an integral part of my life. I first met Max in 2014 on a Pro Corda chamber music course which we both still attend twice a year. It was shortly after a Pro Corda tour to Florence that we conceived the idea of this concert, and so to see it becoming a reality is truly amazing. By combining some of the finest young orchestral players and singers in the country, we hope that this concert will be nothing short of spectacular, and an apt demonstration of our support for the Cathedral and all that it facilitates. To support this effort and that of scores of talented young singers and musicians who are giving their time for free, and our generous sponsors, please buy your ticket soon so that we know that the event can go ahead. Available from the Box Office guildford-cathedral/events/boxoffice or call 01483 547870. Westminster Abbey: Festival of Our Lady of Walsingham 4 May The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is to be celebrated by a Festival at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 4 May. The day will commence with a Sung Eucharist at 11am. This will be celebrated by the Dean of Westminster, and the preacher will be the Right Reverend Philip North, Bishop of Burnley. The day will end with Solemn Evensong at 5pm at which the preacher will be Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation. There will be other events during the afternoon. If you would like to join others from the Cathedral in a form of group transport or for information about the free tickets, which are required, please contact Richard North on 01252 794 802 or Donald Thompson on 01784 434 391.
