Our Worship of God November 25, 2018 9:15 am ( Indicates those who are able, please stand) The Church exists to form Christlike people, in authentic community for the good of the world. -- Brian McLaren Welcome and Announcements Brittany McDonald Null Pastoral Resident Call to Worship (responsive) In deep gratitude we come to worship God. We recognize God as the source of all goodness. All good gifts come from the Spirit of God: Love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, gentleness are all of God. We come with grateful hearts, not for things, but for who God is. We gather to show our gratitude in song and prayer. Opening Songs Counting Every Blessing Your Love Awakens Me Passing the Peace of Christ Sharing our Stories Lynne Lampe Pastoral Prayer

Returning Thanks Song of Praise Angel Kenison-Scott My One My All Offertory Prayer (unison) We are grateful for so much: For glimpses of peace in our world, For reconciliation when we have been estranged, For health following sickness, For rest after hard work, For work when we have been unemployed, For good friends, For family who are friends and for friends who are family, For the good news that hope is stronger than despair, That love is stronger than hate, that life is stronger than death. We thank you and offer you our gratitude. Offering In Christ Alone Scripture Reading Luke 17: 11-19 Brian Ford On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! When he saw them, he said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? Then he said to him, Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise be to Christ.

Announcements Advent 2018 Calm and Bright Something holy takes place each Christmas Eve at First Baptist when we gather at 11 pm for worship. For our final act of worship, we surround the sanctuary with candlelight and sing together the beautiful carol, Silent Night. This year marks the 200 th anniversary of the writing of this carol, and in commemoration, we have designed our Advent theme around the words, Calm and Bright. In our Advent worship we will explore the implications of a world that finds peace in Christ and of a world that radiates the light of Christ s presence. Join us as we wait the coming of Christ s light and the dawn of redeeming grace. Preparing for the Season: Sunday, November 25: Following each worship service, we will set up the Chrismon Trees in each worship space. Monday, November 26: Decorating Party begins at 6 pm in the Sanctuary. Join us to help prepare for Hanging of the Green. Tuesday, November 27 Decorating Party follow-up beginning at 9 am in the Sanctuary. Join us to help prepare for Hanging of the Green. Hanging of the Green, Sunday, December 2 During our worship services, all First Baptist members and friends will have the opportunity to help decorate our church for the season of Advent.

Christmas Dinner, Sunday, December 16 You are invited to celebrate the season with us Sunday evening, December 16 beginning at 5:00pm for First Baptist s annual Christmas dinner. Come prepared for a lovely meal with turkey, ham, and beverages provided by the church, and wonderful side dishes and desserts prepared by you and your First Baptist friends (ugly Christmas outfits are encouraged). Contemplative Advent Small Group This Advent, beginning December 2, Brittany McDonald Null, Pastoral Resident, will be leading a contemplative small group during the 10:15am Spiritual Formation hour. During the small group, they will engage in the spiritual practices of Lectio Divina and centering prayer and have conversations about contemplative living. For more information or to sign up contact Brittany at bnull@fbc-columbia.org VAC Holiday Gift Program The VAC Holiday Gift Program at First Baptist will begin Sunday, November 25 and run through Sunday, December 9. Check the bulletin board in the Children s Building Hallway to find items to purchase for our adopted families. Christmas Poinsettias During Advent, First Baptist Church will be filled with beautiful poinsettias. If you would like to place one or more of these festive plants in memory of, or in honor of, a family member or friend, please find a Poinsettia envelope in the sanctuary entryway and return to the church office, along with $10.00 for each poinsettia you order. Remember to indicate whether the order is in honor or memory. Orders may be made until November 30. We look forward to celebrating Advent with you all.

9:15 am Awakening Worship Service Thank you for worshiping with us today! If you wish to share this worship experience with a neighbor, the service is broadcast live, and the sermon is available on our website within a week.
