THE CROSS & THE FLAME Viroqua & Liberty Pole United Methodist Churches P.O. Box 127, Viroqua, WI 54665 February 2015 Dear Friends, This coming Sunday is February 1st. Soon we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday and stepping into Lent. As a Lenten Discipline, I invite all of us to be in prayer. From the Oxford Book of Prayer are many prayers. Jesus prays in Matthew 6: 9b-13, Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Jesus prays in Luke 10:21b-22, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Jesus prays in John 11:41b-42, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. The first Sunday in Lent, O Lord, for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights; give us grace to use such abstinence, that our flesh being subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly inspirations in righteousness, and true holiness, to thy honor and glory, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Pray for the world, world leaders, the USA, Israel and its leaders, for the church universal, for families, friends, strangers, for peace and freedom for all people. Pray that God would bless each of us with the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23, Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. Sincerely, Pastor Jean Viroqua & Liberty Pole United Methodist Churches Mission Statement The Viroqua & Liberty Pole United Methodist Churches exist for the purpose of carrying out Christ s Great Commission by enabling all who come to personally know the joy of God s love and forgiveness and to lovingly share this joy in the fellowship of the church and in reaching people throughout the world.

THE FLAME and THE CROSS 9 Ash Wednesday: Action Begins in the Heart Lenten Devotions Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God... Joel 2:12-13 As we begin this season of Lent, it s tempting to decide what we will give up or what we will do extra to show God and maybe other people how serious we are about our faith. But the prophet Joel reminds us that what is most important is what happens deep within our hearts. What happens there will show in our actions. If we listen closely to Jesus during Lent, he will speak to our hearts and teach us how to make good choices, even if no one else notices a change in our behavior. Lord, help us to change our hearts so that we will also change our actions this Lent. The First Sunday of Lent: How It Works In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 2 Corinthians 5:19 The central Christian belief is that Christ s death has somehow put us right with God and given us a fresh start. Theories as to how it did this are another matter. A good many different theories have been held as to how it works; what all Christians are agreed on is that it does work. I will tell you what I think it is like. All sensible people know that if you are tired and hungry, a meal will do you good. But the modern theory of nourishment all about vitamins and proteins is a different thing. People ate their dinners and felt better long before the theory of vitamins was ever heard of; and if the theory of vitamins is some day abandoned, they will go on eating their dinners just the same. Theories about Christ s death are not Christianity; they are explanation of how it works. (C. S. Lewis) Father, help me to remember that I need to have faith in you, not to understand everything. Did you know that the Viroqua UMC Sunday service is broadcast on WVRQ - 1360 AM? Please share the good news with friends and neighbors that the Word can be heard every Sunday from 10:30-11:30 AM. Important Information About Your Newsletter Please keep the church office updated about changes in your address. New postal prices have gone into effect resulting in a $1.21 charge for each newsletter returned due to a change in address. Therefore, we are going to a different system where the newsletter will not be forwarded but returned to us. This allows us to be alerted to some changes unless no forwarding address is on file with the post office. Also, if you no longer wish to receive the newsletter, please call the office to have your name removed from the mailing list. Thank you. Many thanks to those committees who are turning in their meeting minutes soon after the meeting has occurred; this allows us to create the newsletter with greater care, attention to detail and accuracy. Please note that because of holiday considerations, the deadline for the March newsletter is early: Monday, February 23rd.
