CONCORDIA S PURPOSE To Make the Love of Jesus R.E.A.L. in the Lives of All People 1 THE HOLY TRINITY FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST May 31, 2015 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. AS WE GATHER You may be surprised that the word Trinity never appears in the Bible. This does not mean, however, that the doctrine, or teaching, of the Trinity is wrong. While the word Trinity is not seen in Scripture, we certainly see the work of the Trinity there. From creation to today s Old Testament Reading, from Jesus Baptism to His Great Commission, we see the Trinity at work time and time again. On this Holy Trinity Sunday, we celebrate that our Lord is the triune God one God in three persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We try to put this mystery of the Trinity into human words through song and in creeds, but we recognize that mere words fall short of describing our truly awesome God. In awe and wonder of the Holy Trinity, we simply join with the seraphim in singing, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory! (Isaiah 6:3). means to be seated means to stand, unless repeated standing is difficult [P: Pastor] [C: Congregation] PRELUDE Choir (10:45) Lamb of God (words and music by Twila Paris, Arranged by Mark Hayes) CALL TO WORSHIP

C: Amen. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord. C: who made heaven and earth. P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Silence for personal confession P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained

3 servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (8:15 only) KYRIE (8:15 only) HYMN OF PRAISE Gloria in Excelsis

COLLECT OF THE DAY (10:45 service continues here) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray together. ALL: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty, You are the one true God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Work through Your Church, through the preached word and administered sacraments, that many would be baptized and taught in Your holy name and confess and worship You, the eternal Trinity; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen. 4 OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 6:1 8 (The Lord commissions Isaiah as a prophet.) R: The Old Testament reading is from Isaiah, chapter six. (After the reading ) R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Acts 2:14a, 22 36 ( God has made Him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. ) R: Epistle reading is from Acts, chapter two. (After the reading ) R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!

ALLELUIA VERSE 5 HOLY GOSPEL John 3:1 17 ( The Spirit gives birth to spirit. ) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. (After the reading ) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ NICENE CREED All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen. We invite the children to come forward as we sing: L.U.Y.H. #31 Father, I adore you, Lay my life before you. How I love you! Jesus, I adore you, Lay my life before you. How I love you! Spirit, I adore you, Lay my life before you. How I love you! CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #496 Holy Spirit, Light Divine 6 SERMON Title: My God is So Big TITHES, PLEDGES, AND OFFERINGS

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: As we recognize the Holy Trinity, we come before our heavenly Father as we pray in the name of the Son, in a faith sustained by the Holy Spirit. Father in heaven, we listen as Your voice quakes and Your glory thunders majesty. As the heavenly host bow down in praise to You, make our worship also pleasing in Your sight. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; C: the whole earth is full of His glory! P: Father in heaven, we listen as Your voice teaches and gives light to darkened eyes. Your Son teaches us that You loved the world so much that You sent Your only-begotten Son to be born, to live a perfect life, to die, and to rise. Grant us joy in believing this message of rescue. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; C: the whole earth is full of His glory! P: Father in heaven, we listen as Your voice strengthens us and sets our tongues ablaze with truth. As we await Your Son s return, empower us to share the Good News of Christ with young and old. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; C: the whole earth is full of His glory! P: Father in heaven, we listen to Your voice proclaim us forgiven, and we anticipate the day when we, like Isaiah, will see You sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, as we enter Your nearer presence. Keep us firm in the faith as we anticipate the awe of heaven and a happy reunion with the saints who have gone before us. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; C: the whole earth is full of His glory! [Special petitions may follow.] 7

P: Father in heaven, to You alone be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
