Dear Congregants: As a recent arrival to Jersey City, I have only begun to beoome aoquainted with many of the serious issues which face our community. However, it did not take long for me to see, that like every urban area, Jersey City has a significant number of homeless people living on its streets and in its public buildings. Even before I became your rabbi, I learned about "Let's Celebrate" and its many efforts to help the homeless and the hungry, including the proposal to renovate the Earl Hotel. I also realize that this proposal has led to some controversy. Recently, I have been informed that the clergy of our city will be mounting an all-out effort to highlight the problem of homelessness in our community. Later this month, olergy of all faiths will sponsor a full page ad in the newspaper which will encourage people of all religions to work together to find a solution to the problem of homelessness in our community. A oommunitywide interfaith prayer service for the needs ot the homeless is also planned. There is also a fund-raising drive for the "Let's Celebrate" Earl Project. Those who would like to contribute to this effort should make their donations payable to "Let's Celebrate c/o St. Aloysius R. C. Church", and mail them to Rev. Gregory Studerus, St. Aloysius Church, 691 Westside Avenue. Jersey City 07305. Please include a note with your donation indicating that you are a member of Temple Beth-El. This effort will coincide with a nationwide effort to call attention to the plight of the homeless in our nation. I join with my colleagues in the clergy in expressing the hope that people of all faiths will work together to find solutions to this problem which both meet the needs of the homeless and satisfy the concerns of all the citizens of our city. Rabbi Kenneth Brickman
