Kirkby Parish Council Village Tidy Up Session - 14th October. The Parish Council wishes to thank all those who helped out in any way with the recent Village Tidy Up session. There was a good turn out on the Saturday morning with excellent progress being made on tidying up around the margins of the green at the crossroads plus various litter picking and work to other areas in the village. Our thanks to Hambleton District Council's Street Scene for an extra street sweep on the Friday morning and for collecting our green bin the following week at no charge. Hurricane Ophelia rather spoiled things by bringing down loads of leaves on the following Monday, but the basic work achieved cannot be undone and the community effort is there for all to see. Invitation - Kirkby Parish Council would like to invite parish residents to a short festive get-together on Monday 11th December from 7pm to 7.30 pm in Kirkby Church Hall before their meeting that evening. This is in celebration of all the works that have been achieved over the past couple of years - refurbished signpost, new and repaired benches, lots of village tidying, and more - by our willing and supportive community. Please come along to share a festive drink and mince pie. Asylum Seekers Thanks, on behalf of all those who have benefited from the numerous gifts of clothing and household goods. Unfortunately the plight of those escaping persecution continues to grow. Warm clothing, bedding and household items continues to be needed and accordingly the Church porch will remain open for those who are able to donate anything which would help those who have nothing. Any queries please ring Ros Tomlinson 01642 711796 A Brace of Talks in G B V H 7.30pm Saturday 18 th November These presentations will be volunteered by Peter Sotheran MBE First, he will give an account of the World War 1 aerodrome at Marske. Captain W E Johns, creator of Biggles, Algy & Ginger, was based there. Some cheese & wine will be provided in the interval. He will then elaborate on the remarkable life of Gertrude Bell - "Queen Of The Desert" - expert "Arabist", adventurer, archaeologist, friend and collaborator of T.E.Lawrence and a key architect in the fashioning of the modern Middle East and Iraq in particular. Some of you may have watched the excellent, recent documentary - "Letters From Baghdad". Her local origins and family story involve one of the original Middlesbrough "ironmasters", the "arts & crafts" creation of The Rountons and Rounton Grange - plus the Village Hall, Blue Bell Inn & the water tower in Ingleby Cross and "Red Barns" in Redcar. Perhaps you've enjoyed "Roots" farm shop & cafe without knowing its history. Tickets ( 7.50 ) and enquiries - Paul Cann - 01642 712176. Profits to charity.

Kirby, Great Broughton & Ingleby Greenhow Local History Group Our November lecture is another local tale told by our founder Geoff Taylor. Entitled "The Meynell Hall Murder", it goes back to the dark days of the 17th century. Geoff will tell the tale on Monday 20th November at 7.30 pm in GBVH and everyone is very welcome. Members 1, visitors 3. Coffee and tea will be served. At this meeting you will be able to buy Snapshots No. 4 with exploits from Peter Skilbeck's teenage years in the villages during the fifties, memories of local poet Frances Alder, an account of Peter Clarkson's brief flirtation with a stage career and many other fascinating titbits - all for just 3. Our Christmas Social this year is on Friday 8th December in Kirkby Church Hall and will be a very special occasion as Geoff founded the Local History Group in 2007, so 2017 is a landmark year to be celebrated in style - Elizabethan style - with good wine, tasty food, a little music and entertainment and good companye!
