United through Baptism, nourished by the Eucharist and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are committed to serving our brothers and sisters. We welcome all to join us as we celebrate the joy and mystery of the empty tomb.

MARCH 25, 2018 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD PAGE 2 Gospel Reflections for Palm Sunday With the children of the Hebrews, the Church participates today in the triumph of Christ. He enters the Holy City, Jerusalem, to pass from this world to his father. The passion narratives which are read on this Sunday form without a doubt the primitive heart of our gospels. There are many concerns which converge around these simple but dramatic stories. They influence the manner of recounting the passion. In the care taken to show that Christianity had nothing to do with a criminal or rebellious movement, the Evangelists highlight both the plot which results in the death of Jesus and the innocence of the Savior crucified for sinners. They also demonstrate to Israel how this death fulfilled the scriptures, accomplished in the central event of the passion and in the details of its unfolding. The historical insertion of the crucifixion into the celebration of the Jewish Passover is decisive for Christians. Jesus replaced the immolation of the paschal lamb with the sacrifice of a new covenant. In addition to these apologetic and theological concerns, the evangelists proposed Jesus as a role model of humility, of prayer, of endurance, of suffering. In these virtues which perfected the humanity of Jesus, the Church had much to learn. The passion narratives are not reduced to a mere recitation of episodes. Marked by the personality of each evangelist; they present an undivided history in which the assaults of evil, carried to their heights in Jesus passion, are rendered powerless by God. Holy Thursday begins the Triduum, which, from the fourth century, celebrated the Paschal Mystery. The oldest and still official name of this day is Thursday of the Lord s Supper. It commemorates the historical Gospel events surrounding the Last Supper and the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The only Mass that day is the 7:00 pm observance of the Lord s Last Supper. Remembering the institution of the Holy Eucharistic is the heart of the Holy Thursday observance. Parish liturgies, with joyful overtones once again take place in the evening. Bells ring and festive colors are used for vestments and decorations. The Glory to God, not sung since Ash Wednesday, returns for this brief moment. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: At the end of the Holy Thursday liturgy, the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession with incense and song to the Day Chapel. After placing the consecrated bread in the tabernacle, an atmosphere of quiet waiting with the Lord begins. Following the evening Mass, time of Adoration before the blessed Sacrament will continue until 11:00 pm. Stripping of the Altar: A new theme becomes obvious with an anticipation of suffering and death. The altar table in the Church is stripped in silence. At times in the past, this action was considered symbolic of the stripping of Jesus before his crucifixion. People begin leaving quietly for their home. An atmosphere of sadness and reflection begins. These are hours of waiting with Jesus as the saving events begin to unfold. Good Friday is the commemoration of the death of Jesus on the cross just outside the wall of Jerusalem. This is the only day of the year the Eucharist is not celebrated in its usual form of the Mass, but we will have a Liturgy of the Word at 1:30 pm with a reading of the Passion narrative and Psalms prophesying the death of Jesus, veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion. Veneration of the Cross: Late in the fourth century, the veneration of the cross was introduced into Good Friday traditions in Jerusalem. The slow procession of people to kiss the cross remains a dramatic feature of the Good Friday service. Good Friday liturgy concludes with Holy Communion. We will also hold a Tenebrae Service with the choir at 7:00 pm. on Friday evening. Blessing of the Easter Food Holy Saturday at 12:30 pm, we have the popular tradition for the preparation of festivities of Easter. On this day or before, eggs are boiled and dyed, new clothes are purchased, foods prepared. The blessing of special foods for Easter is still a tradition, especially among those of Eastern European ancestry. Baskets of food are brought to the church and blessed by the priest or deacon. Easter Vigil: This is the high point of the liturgical year. The Vigil has regained its rightful place as the most important ritual of the year. An annual celebration of the Lord s resurrection goes back to the first generation of Christianity. During the first three centuries, this was the ONLY feast observed throughout the church and was done by way of a vigil, a watch. It was natural that Christians chose the night hours to celebrate their religious experience of a Christ victorious over death and sin, as well as their victory along with His. Holy Saturday services include lighting of the Easter fire, which still begins the vigil today, but was not part of the ritual in ancient times. The lighting of a new Easter fire also had a practical purpose. The lamps in the church in the early centuries used to be extinguished Holy Thursday night. Consequently, a new fire had to be lit for the celebration and readers to see by. It is during the Vigil that those preparing for initiation are received into the Church. The Vigil begins at 8:00 pm. Easter Masses: Easter Sunday Masses will be at 8:00 am, 10:00 am and 12:00 Noon.

Please contact Kristine Marsico at 724-586-5022 or advancement@holysepulcher.org to schedule a tour. Today, Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, we are now entering the holiest week of the year. The journey we have made through Lent is coming to a climax. It is hard to stay awake to the sin and suffering in this world. Even Jesus disciples failed to keep watch with him in His deep sorrow. But the Gospel urges us to keep trying. It asks us to go with Christ to the heart of sorrow and to stand awake and in solidarity with the poor and suffering, who are Jesus in disguise. Our culture offers us many escapes, many ways to sleep, but it is by encountering those who suffer, and by bringing God's love to them, that we come to know Christ and his Cross and can look with hope to Resurrection. Today s reading is in stark contrast to the Passion of Good Friday, but hints at what is to come with Easter. Putting today s Hosanna! next to Crucify him! is a difficult thing. How is it possible that Jesus was greeted gloriously and then tortured? The reality of Jesus mission requires both. Our story, too, has joyful and painful times. We must be able to look to God during both times of joy and periods of struggle and sorrow. It requires much faith to hold the tension of both. Living the Word: Participate as a family in a Holy Week service. As a reminder of what this week is about and the tension of holding hope with fear, place the palms from today in a prominent place with some small slips of paper. Invite family members throughout the week to write something they hope for on one side of a slip of paper and something they fear on the other. On Saturday night, burn these papers to symbolize that you are giving them over to God. Although our world faces problems that are quite daunting, we should never underestimate what God can do through people who are willing to serve Him and leave the outcome to God. Easter Vigil: At this Easter Vigil we rejoice and celebrate with the following RCIA Elect, Jamie Pokoj who will receive Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. Also, receiving First Holy Communion and Confirmation are Ashley Ciafre, Seth Pokoj, and Brandy Shaffer. At a later date Tina Biskup and Gary Lindner will be received into full Catholic communion. Let us keep all of them in our prayers.
