In his 1981 apostolic exhortation On the Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World, Pope John Paul II wrote, The future of humanity passes by way of the family (Familiaris Consortio, 86). The pope s emphasis on the central importance of the family for the health of the Church and society reinforced the Knights mission. Likewise, when John Paul II published an apostolic exhortation on the role of the laity in 1988 and an encyclical on the Gospel of Life in 1995, the Order urged Catholics everywhere to embrace these teachings and even published study guides to accompany the documents. During John Paul II s pontificate, the Knights also strengthened their ties to the universal Church through increased support of the Vatican. In 1981, the Order established the Vicarius Christi Fund, annual earnings of which are presented to the pope for his personal charities. The Knights then underwrote a series of major restorations at St. Peter s Basilica in anticipation of the Jubilee Year. In Evangelium Vitae, the pope called the Church a people of life and for life, a description that the Knights sought to live up to through personal witness and efforts to build a pro-life culture. The Order also furthered the work of re-evangelization within the Church through several initiatives in Catholic education: support of Catholic schools, scholarship funds for Catholic seminaries and universities, and the establishment of a North American campus of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. In addition to celebrating the fifth centenary of the evangelization of the New World, the Order also honored contemporary models of holiness. Supreme Knight Virgil C. Dechant presented Mother Teresa with the inaugural Gaudium et Spes Award in 1992, and the Archdiocese of Hartford officially opened the cause for Father McGivney s canonization, with the Knights support, in 1997. Pope John Paul II celebrates Mass for approximately 75,000 people at Aqueduct Racetrack during his pastoral visit to the United States in 1995. The passing of James J. Reilly has hit many people hard. Of course, Jim s family suffers most of all. Jim was taken from us too soon. Although he was 85 years young he left us abruptly. When we heard the news of his passing we all knew this was not merely a person passing but an institution, way of life, and culture of love for which Jim so prominently displayed during his long life. If God were to ask me who would you pick out of all the souls you know that we need more of I would immediately say Jim Reilly. His personality and smile were infectious. His energy and intelligence were inspiring. His generosity and charity was unequaled. He was an eloquent Catholic gentleman. Many years ago I used to deliver telegrams as a child in the 1960 s. The office was located on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights Queens. I remember fondly placing my bicycle in the bike rack out front of this office. I collected my telegrams and off I sped to deliver messages received over a wire. It was to my surprise that I learned from Jim that he managed that very same office during that same time. To think that we actually met 40-years prior to my time here at St. Pius X Church was incredible. I do remember it was a pleasant experience and that if you brought back telegrams undelivered the boss never was upset and never had harsh words. It was a great work place experience. During my time as Grand Knight of our Council he shared much of his knowledge of the order. Jim touched so many lives during his 85 years it is simply impossible to document all. His mere presence brought smiles to so many faces. Our Church and community are so much richer having him for the time we did. I am sure he is helping someone as we speak. The Knights of Columbus principles are Charity-Unity-Fraternalism- Patriotism. Jim was all these things and more. God Bless his soul in heaven now. You are already missed. 1932-2018 Not All Men Can Lead. Not All Men That Can Lead Choose To Lead. But Those Men That Can Lead And Do Are Truly Blessed!
