Page 2 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In our Year of Mercy, St. Kilian Church is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Holy Cross Melkite Church Divine Liturgy with Fr. François Beyrouti once a month for the next several months! Read below to learn more about the history of our Eastern Church. Attendance at this Mass also fulfills your Sunday obligation. Learning to Breathe with the Eastern and Western Lungs of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. July 30, 2016. Father François Beyrouti, Ph.D./D.Th. What did Saint Pope John Paul II mean when he said: The Church must breathe with her two lungs! (Encyclical letter Ut Unum Sint. Paragraph 54. May 25, 1995). Jesus told the apostles, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age (Matthew 28:19-20). When Jesus sent the apostles out to proclaim His death, resurrection, and glorious second coming, He did not send them out with lectionaries, sacramentaries, or prayer books. In the Acts of the Apostles and the letters of Saint Paul we read how they travelled throughout the Roman Empire and established Churches in Antioch, Corinth, Ephesus, Alexandria, Rome, and other prominent cities. These Churches grew and developed local traditions, prayers, and customs. In 312, the emperor Constantine stopped the persecution of Christianity and, in 325, all the bishops of the world gathered in the city of Nicaea to make sure that although each had developed particular traditions they would always remain completely united on all doctrinal issues. This concept of unity in diversity became a core aspect of what it meant to be Catholic. The word Catholic means universal in Latin and belonging to the whole in Greek, thus the Catholic Church continued to grow in both East and West by appreciating and developing local customs and traditions while always striving for complete unity of faith. That is why Saint Augustine said: In things essential: Unity; in things unessential: Diversity; and in all things: Charity. These apostolic Churches that developed in the Eastern and Western parts of the Roman Empire and all the way to India formed five liturgical families within the one Catholic Church. These are also sometimes called rites and consist of one Western, the Roman or Latin, and four Eastern, the Byzantine, Armenian, Coptic, and Syriac liturgical families. Due to 1400 years of intermittent persecution, the Eastern Catholic Churches today are much smaller than the much larger Roman Catholic Church. In order to show that despite their smaller size, they are nonetheless greatly valued and treasured the fathers of the Second Vatican Council produced the Decree on the Catholic Churches of the Eastern Rite (Orientalium Ecclesiarum). This important document states: The Catholic Church holds in high esteem the institutions, liturgical rites, ecclesiastical traditions and the established standards of the Christian life of the Eastern Churches, for in them, distinguished as they are for their venerable antiquity, there remains conspicuous the tradition that has been handed down from the Apostles through the Fathers and that forms part of the divinely revealed and undivided heritage of the universal Church (Paragraph 1. Solemnly Promulgated By His Holiness Pope Paul VI on November 21, 1964). The traditions and customs of both the Eastern and Western Catholic Churches remain highly valued and treasured because in each are found the apostolic faith that bears witness to the kaleidoscope beauty of the one Catholic Church. A rose bush is beautiful but a rose garden that is full of an array of colors and shapes is even more beautiful because it highlights both variety and unity. In order to minister to the Eastern Catholics in Southern Orange County, the Melkite Eastern Catholic Community will celebrate the Byzantine Divine Liturgy in English at Saint Kilian s Roman Catholic Church on the second Sunday of every month, with the exception of August and October when the Divine Liturgy will be on the third Sunday of the month. We are grateful to Saint Kilian Roman Catholic Church for their generous heart. We will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the hall prior to the Divine Liturgy to get to know each other, review the hymns, and get everyone s ideas on how we can build a healthy future on the solid foundation of faith. Below are the 2016 dates: Meet in the hall at 5:30 p.m. and the Divine Liturgy in the Church will begin at exactly 6:30 p.m. on: Sunday, *August 21, 2016, Sunday, September 11, 2016, Sunday, *October 16, 2016, Sunday, November 13, 2016, and Sunday, December 11, 2016. If we continue to learn about our common Catholic heritage we will both understand and live what Saint Pope John Paul II meant about the Western and Eastern Catholic Churches when he said: The Church must breathe with her two lungs!
