Course/Module description: Translation is a pivotal human activity that allows for the transmission of various forms of knowledge across geographical and cultural boundaries. In Asia, great cultural and linguistic diversity has resulted in variegated and complex ways in which people have theorized and practiced translation, from ancient times to the present. This course will consider various translation traditions across Asia, with a focus on South and Southeast Asia. A central theme of this inquiry will be the relationship between religion and translation as it took shape in Asia, through an examination of the history and practice of translation in Islam, Christianity and Hinduism. Course/Module aims: During this course students will: 1. acquaint themselves with some basic approaches and theories in the field of Translation Studies 2. be introduced to different translation traditions in South and Southeast Asia 3. consider how place, language and religious beliefs shape the way translation is understood and practiced Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. Have a basic understanding of the field of Translation Studies 2. Be familiar with a range of translation traditions in Asia 3.
