CONCORDIA S PURPOSE To Make the Love of Jesus R.E.A.L. in the Lives of All People SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST June 2, 2013 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. AS WE GATHER (prepared by Jim Gann) Is faith the work of God, or is faith the act of man? On the one hand the scriptures tell us that our faith is of the powerful working of God. [Colossians 2:12] God (the Holy Spirit) is the one who places and nourishes faith in our hearts so that we believe in Christ. One can have an intellectual knowledge of the Law and the Gospel and still not believe. But, it is by faith that we believe the Gospel. Surely, it is God Who creates and sustains our spiritual lives. Yet, because it is we who are doing the believing in our hearts and souls, faith, in this case, is an act of man. So what is faith? It is both: the work of God and the act of man. means to be seated means to stand, unless repeated standing is difficult PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP RINGING OF THE BELLS OPENING HYMN #817, v.1, 6, 7 Earth and All Stars 1

DIVINE SERVICE SETTING THREE + (Hymnal, p. 184) INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. 2 CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: O Almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all you sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

4 SALUTATION AND COLLECT P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. All: O Lord God, by Your mercy, in our Baptism, You made us each a part of Your Bride, the Church. Grant that, as Your Church, we humbly receive Your blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation through the gift of faith; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING I Kings 8:22-24, 27-29, 41-43 (Solomon prays at the dedication of the temple.) R: The Old Testament reading is from I Kings, chapter eight. R: The Epistle Reading is from Galatians, from chapter one. (After the reading ) R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! HOLY GOSPEL Luke 7:1-10 (Jesus is amazed at the centurion's faith.) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventh chapter. (The Gospel is read.) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

APOSTLE'S CREED All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. 6 And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen. We invite the children forward as e sing: L.U.Y.H. #31 Father, I adore you, Lay my life before. How I love you! Jesus, I adore you, Lay my life before. How I love you! P: O Lord of grace, You give your good gifts to those who call upon You in humble, repentant faith. Grant us Your gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord, we humbly ask, C: hear our prayer. P: O Lord of all, in Your granting the miracle of healing to the centurion's empty hands of faith, we are reminded that You sent Your Son for all nations. Embolden us today to fulfill Your commission to make disciples of all nations. Lord, we humbly ask, C: hear our prayer. P: O Lord of truth, preserve Your Church, Your people, from being misled by a different Gospel or a distortion of the Gospel of Christ. Keep us steadfast in Your Word, which proclaims the true Gospel of Jesus Christ crucified and risen. Lord, we humbly ask, C: hear our prayer. P: O Lord of peace, preserve us and all people from danger. Grant to us the peace that the world cannot give, that we may obey You, be defended from our enemies, and live in peace.
