It was a joy to welcome over sixty kids and all of our staff and volunteers back for another great year. As we gathered for worship that first night I told all of the kids, that there as just one rule and one promise to follow and know at Logos. The rule is to treat everyone like a child of God. The promise is that you will be loved like a child of God when you are at Logos. As we talked more about the rule and the promise, I wasn t surprised to find the kids had a much easier time understanding the rule. They shared lots of examples of what it meant to treat others like a child of God: be kind, take turns, be good listeners. They had the rule down, but when I asked what the promise meant, they had a hard time articulating what it meant to be loved like a child of God. I explained it meant they would be forgiven when they did things wrong, accepted for who they are, and always, always safe and loved no matter what they did. I wonder if even as adults we have an easier time understanding rules than promises. We know how to understand right and wrong, but do we know how to accept unconditional love that doesn t waver no matter what we do wrong? We are God s beloved children and God s love for us never wavers. This promise is easy to read, but often harder to accept. So read the promise again and again until you know it in your heart: God s love for you will never stop. In Christ, 2

FALL CLEAN-UP for the church, is scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd at 10:00 a.m. We appreciate everyone who can come and help! ADULT EDUCATION Check out these new adult education opportunities for the fall Brown-Bag Bible Study-starting September 12 th we will be offering a lunch time Bible study every Wednesday from 12:00-1:00 in the Gail Jereb room. Bring your lunch and we will discuss the texts that will be part of the service on Sunday. No need to do any preparation ahead of time. Dinner and Documentary-gather with your friends from ALC to watch a documentary, eat dinner, and discuss the film. The documentary titles and dates are below. All are welcome to come. Daycare is available for both evenings. Warehoused- On Sunday, September 30 th at 5:30 we will watch Warehoused. The feature-length documentary, Warehoused, explores the plight of long-term refugees through a glimpse into the lives of those living in Dadaab, Kenya, one of the world s largest refugee camps. We see the camp's inner workings through one man's journey to do everything in his power to provide for his family. This man s story is not unique however; it accentuates the much larger problems that long-term refugees have faced for centuries. The Mask You Live In-On Sunday, November 11 th at 5:30 p.m. we will watch The Mask Y ou Live In which follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America s narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become real men. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the boy crisis and tactics to combat it. The Mask Y ou Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men. (note the film does contain explicit language.) 7
