(Philippians 4:8) NIV Christmas has come and gone for another year, so that can mean only one thing: A new year is here! And that often means New Year s Resolutions as well! I am terrible at making resolutions. Well, let me rephrase that: I m good at making resolutions, but I am terrible at keeping them. My resolutions always seem to be geared towards changing the negative or undesirable behaviors that I have. I often resolve to quit eating so much junk food, or to exercise more, or to quit watching so much television or even to spend my money more carefully. As humans, we often find ourselves thinking and focusing on the negative aspects of our lives. We find it easy and even natural to concentrate on the things we don t like about ourselves, our families, our friends, our communities, and maybe even our church. The Bible asks us to look at our lives through a different lens. The Apostle Paul, writing from prison to the church at Philippi, urges the people to have a different outlook. He reminds them the secret to happiness---to contentment--- is found in one s attitude. Paul challenges us as Christians to live life from a perspective of gratitude and contentment, rather than projecting discontent and negativity everywhere we go. It may be difficult for us, but we are given guidelines on how to do that. A few verses later in Philippians, we are reminded I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13). This year, rather than making a long list of resolutions that we may or may not keep, how would our lives be different if we followed the advice in Philippians 4:8? Think how we could grow spiritually and mature in our faith journey if we chose to think about things that were admirable, pure, right, noble, praiseworthy, etc. But where do we find such things? A good starting place is Scripture! Spending time reading and studying scripture helps us refocus and prioritize our attitudes and actions. Devotional booklets abound, and the internet has plenty of daily devotional sites. Visit a Christian bookstore, listen to a Christian music radio station or CD, participate in a Bible this year, go on a week-end retreat, or join a Sunday class! Even spending four or five minutes in prayer each day can make an amazing difference in our spiritual lives. What I am talking about is more than simply the power of positive thinking. I am talking about the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, our homes, and our church. When we choose to focus on our spiritual journey, we find ourselves growing and maturing in our faith. We find that we begin to change from the inside out, and our perspective is no longer the same as it once was. Things that once mattered seem to become less important. The Apostle Paul knew the secret to contentment. In this new year of 2014, will you pray with me that each one of us will find that joy and contentment that is a result of a life transformed? New Year s Blessings, Pastor Susan

Special thanks to Beverly for leading us, and Jackie for being there to play our parts! To all the volunteers who drove FIX and Youth this month and in the past to their various activities! Gifts are given... To the Van Fund, by Johnny and Nita Whitney, in memory of Joe Cole To the LAF Building Fund, by Glendell and Peck Brown. Thank You From Pastor Susan I would like to say a big thank you to all of the members and friends here at Skiatook FUMC! Thank you for the lovely love offering given to me on Christmas Eve. Thank you for the many kind words, encouraging cards, home made goodies, gift cards, fresh summer veggies, phone calls, and all the many ways you make this pastor feel loved and appreciated throughout the year! I am truly blessed to be appointed to this congregation! Congratulations! Congratulations to Revs. Mark and Susan Whitley and their family! Their son Chris and his wife Kim welcomed a healthy and beautiful 7lb, 2oz., baby girl on December 20th. Adalynn Renae Whitley is the first grandbaby, and she has already improved their lives! Our Condolences You are Appreciated! Our thoughts and prayers are with Joyce Brock and her family. Joyce lost her sister, Helen Elzo on December 20th following an extended illness. Even after transferring her membership, Helen continued to be a Red Cross Blood Drive Volunteer. We want to thank everyone for the prayers, cards, phone calls, visits, and meals during Larry's knee replacement and rehab. Sympathies also to Kim Creekmore in the loss of her dad Darrell Mullins. Our prayers are with you and your family during this time. CONFIRMATION IS COMING! Pastor Susan and Linda Tucker will be teaching a confirmation class this spring for youth 6th grade and up. While Confirmation is typically 6th or 7th grade, we understand that there are several older youth who have not had the opportunity to participate in a class for one reason or another. Any youth 6th grade or older in the church is invited to participate. Confirmation is the opportunity for young people to be taught some of the basic tenets of Christianity, what it means to be a devoted Christ follower, and also what it means to be United Methodist. Confirmation concludes with either baptism (if student has not been baptized), and a public profession of faith in front of the congregation, becoming full members of the Church. There will be a short parent meeting on Jan. 15 immediately after church (2nd service) for parents who want more information. It is a blessing to have a very caring and loving Church family. We are proud to be part of this church and love all of you. Larry and Joan Dalvine Thank you for your prayers, meals, visits, and love over these past few months. I am so grateful for my church family. Love, Rose Brehm HOLY SMOKERS HEAVENLY HOLIDAY MEAT ASST. Skiatook First United Methodist Church 1007 S. Osage P.O. Box 910 Skiatook, OK 74070 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED RECYCLE PLEASE FINANCE NEWS Thank you for another great year at Skiatook FUMC! We finished our year strong, and paid all of our missional obligations by mid December! This hasn t happened in several years! Thanks to everyone who gave so generously of both your time and financial resources. In addition to paying a monthly note on our LAF building, we were able to pay $12,150.00 towards the principal of the building. We are working hard to reduce the debt on that. Thank you to those who made a special, designated gift towards that fund! Our Vantastic Giving Opportunity was a great success. We now have over $25,400.00 in hand, and are in the active stages of looking for a vehicle. Thank you for your generosity in that area as well. What an amazing gift this is! We are so excited about the possibilities of having a church vehicle. Our Building God s Kingdom Financial sermon series in November brought in several new first time pledges, increased pledges from some, and an additional number of people choosing automatic bank drafts. Thank you so much! However, our overall pledges were down somewhat, and we are attributing that to people who have not turned in a pledge card that normally do. While pledging is not absolutely necessary, it does give us a good general idea of what we may expect in the way of giving, as we prepare new budgets. If you have not turned in a pledge card and wish to, there is still time. There are plenty in the pews, or you can even e-mail Pastor Susan or Patti McKinney, and let us know how you would like to make a financial pledge. We will be preparing our 2017 budget in the next few weeks. THANK YOU to all you have done to be a part of God s Kingdom here in Skiatook. We are excited about what 2017 will bring!
