We congratulate all these honorees and thank them for their good work. WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: At the Easter Vigil in our church parish we had someone make their confirmation. I hear that in other parishes, people are baptized. What is happening? Answer: This is an important question. People who come to the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) have various backgrounds. Some come to find out about faith; others are baptized in another Christian denomination and are seeking full communion with us; and still others come already knowing they want to be baptized. Some come as Catholics who are baptized but who want to complete their initiation into the Christian faith with the other Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist and Confirmation). Those already baptized, who seek full communion with us, are called candidates. Their formation in faith has already begun and they have knowledge of Jesus, the Gospels, and what it means to be a believer. Those who are not baptized need to be formed in faith and develop a relationship with God. They are called catechumens. Those who are already Catholic grow in faith and are Candidates for Eucharist and or Confirmation. The RCIA is a faith formation process that is more that catechism. Other elements of church life are also important: community, spirituality, traditions, Scripture, personal commitment to faith, etc. All of these things are discussed and experienced in the RCIA. Our focus is to be formed into Christ, so Christ is perfected in us as we are initiated into the church community. As such, the whole parish becomes part of that process as we invite and welcome people to join us and our church and to complete their church membership. Gospel for EASTER VIGIL, Cycle A Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed. The two Marys were in for a surprise. They had come, as usual, to do the ritual anointing of their dead friend s body. But on their arrival, not only was there an earthquake, there was also an angel whose appearance was like lightning and whose clothing was white as snow. The brave guards were so scared they became like dead men, but the women managed to stay on their feet and hear the words of the angel. Guess what! Jesus isn t here. He s been raised from the dead. Now go share the good news! No wonder these women were feeling a mixture of emotions! They were frightened by these incredible supernatural events, but overjoyed that Jesus was alive again. Just imagine their joy when Jesus met them on their way, and they were able to embrace him and worship him. What a day! Now, we too join in the celebration of this day of all days. Every Easter, we recall these glorious events, but we do more than just remember. We also rejoice that our Lord is alive right now, that death and sin have been conquered forever, that the gates of heaven are open for us. The joy of Easter is not a nostalgic kind of happiness that only looks backwards. It is instead a call to rejoice in the gifts that we can enjoy today and in eternity. We may not have seen the angel, felt the earthquake, or kissed the feet of the risen Lord, but we are nonetheless the beneficiaries of this momentous event. We are an Easter people, a people in the hands of a loving God whose power can overcome all the terrible threats and trials of existence with the amazing gift of eternal life. Questions for the Week Vigil Gospel and Easter Sunday First and Second Readings Matthew 28:1-10 Why do you think God revealed the resurrection of Christ first to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary? Acts 10:34a, 37-43 We hear in Peter s speech how he and the other apostles were chosen by God to be witnesses to the Resurrection. Who in your life needs to hear your witness to the resurrection of Christ? Colossians 3:1-4 What do you find most challenging in Paul s advice to the Colossians, Seek what is above... not of what is on earth?
