Mark: Called By God Mark 1:9-20 Key Text: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Rom. 8:28) Key Thought: God s call on our life is powerful and significant, shaping our very identity and establishing our life s purpose. 1) Intro & Context 2) Affirmed by the Father (v. 11) a. Those God loves & in whom He delights (cf. Neh. 1:5; Ps. 1; 32:10; 147:11) vs. those in whom God is angered (cf. Ps. 52:1-7; Hos. 10:12-15; Rev. 2:20-23) b. The significance of hearing this affirmation from God (cf. Ps. 2:6-9; Rom. 8:28-30) 3) Time spent in the desert (v. 12) a. Desert growth (cf. Rom. 5:3-5; James 1:2-4) b. We have many examples of biblical leaders who spent time in the desert (and/or exile): Joseph: 15 years (cf. Gen. 37;38-41) Moses: 40 years (cf. Ex. 2:15-22; Acts 7:23,30) David: 7-8 years (cf. 1 Sam. 18-31) Elijah (cf. 1 Kgs. 19:1-18) Nehemiah: Grew up in exile John the Baptist: From youth to age 30 (cf. Lk. 1:80) 4) Responding to the call (vv. 17-20) (cf. (cf. Mt. 10:37-39; Lk. 9:23-27; 57-62) 5) Conclusion QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION Do you have the firm confidence that God loves you and delights in you? If not, are you willing to pursue God until you can receive that affirmation from Him? Have you spent sufficient time in the desert? Did it increase your faith, or weaken it? Are you willing to follow God with no limits? Are you ready to receive, then, from God unlimited grace and support? Are you more like a worldly Christian, or a world-class Christian?
