CATECHETICAL MINISTRY AND UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS X-StATiC The Daughters of Charity Spring Religious Vocation Discernment Retreat Have you ever thought about becoming a Sister? Single Catholic women ages 18-40 are invited to a Religious Vocation Discernment Retreat with the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul on April 10-12, 2015 in Lost Altos Hills, California (Bay Area). If you would like to know more about attending this prayerful and reflective discernment retreat, contact Sister Lisa Laguna, D.C. at 650-949-8890 or 213-210-9903, or e-mail us at Sr.LisaDC@aol.com. Find us on Facebook at: Daughters of Charity Vocations U.S., follow us at Twitter.com/DofCharity or read about us on www.daughtersofcharity.com TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last rites is a persistent but pesky phrase in the Catholic lexicon, and not a particularly useful phrase since it props open the door to misunderstanding. Many Catholics presume it refers to the anointing of the sick, yet there is nothing last about it. Clearly, the Church desires anointing to be celebrated fairly early on in the crisis of illness, and not as a last measure. The Rites for the Dying stand apart in the Church s plan, and include two principal rites. The first is viaticum, Latin for food for the journey, the reception of Holy Communion by a dying person. Even very active and aware Catholics often do not realize that this last rite does not require a priest s presence, but can be conducted by a deacon or minister of Holy Communion. The second last rite in the pastoral plan is a prayer called Commendation of the Dying. Similarly, this does not require the presence of a priest, but can be led by any minister or family member. Too often, we have focused on what only a priest can do, namely anoint, and have forgotten the fullness of liturgical care that the Church desires for its dying faithful. The last rites are completely available to us even when a priest is not. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Saint Anthony has a Parish Update we send out via email? Have you received it? Have you opened it and read it? We send it out the first week of every month and if there is a need, we may send out another one during the month. ALL High School Students join us tonight for the 5:30 p.m. Mass. and afterwards for Super Denario Bros. There will be no X-StATiC next week due to the Winter Recess. Plan on joining us on Sunday, February 22 nd for In the Name of Love Registration Forms for X-StATiC are in the turnstile in the vestibule at the McKean Church and on the back table at the Bertram Church. Our next gathering will be on Tuesday, February 24 th. Our topic will be Sober & Alert Join us for a very interesting discussion! C.R.E.A.T.E. Registration Forms are in the turnstile, in case you have not registered. Questions, contact Joann Maier at 997-4808 HEALING MINISTRY During Jesus ministry he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons. This is the case in today s Gospel. Jesus fulfills the vision of Psalm 147: He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Jesus knew, however, that he couldn t possibly heal all the illness in the world. No matter how many people he cured or how many hours he ministered, there always would be more suffering people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering. His purpose was to preach the coming of the reign of God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could have said, Woe to me if I do not preach that good news. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: We just have two more Sundays of Ordinary Time before we enter into the season of Lent. Please bring back your blessed palms so that we may burn them to create ashes to be blessed and used on Ash Wednesday, February 18. We will distribute ashes at Mass at 8:15 am and 7:30 PM. In addition there will be a word service with distribution of ashes at 4:00 PM. There will be a few Lenten devotions on Friday nights TBD. This year the pastoral Council is primarily focusing on small faith sharing groups based on Renew International materials For the Life of the World, reflections on the Sunday Readings prepared by Sister Catherine T. Nerney, SSJ, Ph.D. The dates, times and places are published in the parish bulletin if you haven t signed up yet. Initially, this parish and diocesan wide process began in the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. It has grown over the past thirty years to be an internationally known process for people to meet in small groups, share their faith, learn more from other people s faith, and have time to read, reflect, discuss, pray and act. Connect: For the Life of the World uses the current Sunday readings for the six weeks of Lent. These Lenten reflections are intended to empower Christian communities to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8). They seek to call forth and strengthen communal commitments to the work of justice and to the ongoing conversion of hearts. Only such a response can genuinely embody the gospel imperative. The capacity to live such radical, communal lives is not something we can give ourselves. It comes to us as a gift. We must surrender ourselves to the movement of the Spirit and the living God in our lives. The program consists of six sessions: (1) Remembering, Reforming, Repenting, (2) Recognizing the Gift, Trusting the Giver, (3) The Freedom to be Foolish, (4) Becoming the Message, (5) Learning to Love like God, (6) The Point of Such Extravagance. There is a booklet for each participant to read and follow in addition to rereading the Sunday readings, a Music CD, and a facilitator s guide. Besides the reading, reflection, discussion and prayer, each session ends with an invitation to act, pick one thing that you can do to live out the Gospel in the coming week. Please take advantage of this faith sharing opportunity. and sign up today. Blessings, Father Larry OCTOBER 2015 - PILGRIMAGE TO SPAIN, FRANCE AND PORTUGAL: George s International Tours has put together a special pilgrimage package from October 1-15, 2015 visiting many of the significant Marian pilgrimage sites in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Lourdes, Burgos, Santiago De Compostela, Fatima, Salamanca, and Madrid. Some of the places we will visit are Gaudi s famous La Sagrada Familia, Manresa the place of conversion for Saint Ignatius, Burgos Cathedral and the Carmelite convent with some relics of Saint Teresa and so much more. The cost of this great pilgrimage experience is $4,175 per person double occupancy inclusive. There will be a Mass practically every day, and the opportunity to share faith with some other wonderful spirit filled people. I have traveled with George s Tours before with several parishioners, and it will be an excellent tour. We will also have a great tour guide and chaplain. If you are interested, please contact me so that I can forward the itinerary to you. Please respond soon. Father Larry. ADA 2015 - Called to Do God s Work, Together in Christ Thank you to everyone who has already answered the request to participate in the 2015 Annual Diocesan Appeal. If you have not yet responded, we want and need your participation! Don t forget, if we exceed our goal of $76,630, 100% of the funds come back to our parish.
