Now and Then Notes from the Pastor s Desk You may have noticed when you came to Church today some landscaping done this week around the property. This was necessary not only because it had become overgrown and for aesthetic reasons but also because it was necessary to prepare the Church for painting. The good news on that front is that we have bids in and are in the final stages of making a decision to move forward painting the Church. This is due to your goodwill and generosity in response to our seven week campaign to Paint the Church, Meet the Match. Thanks to the more than 180 parishioners who responded and especially to the anonymous donors who offered the very generous $10,000 match. We have raised $30,000 from your donations as well as the $10,000 challenge for a total of $40,000 which will enable us to address other projects as well as paint the Church. Consider this to be not only an economic commitment on your part but also a willingness to share in order to continue our mission of deepening our own commitment to Christ and helping to present the message to others. Finally, if you will permit me a personal observation. I m encouraged and humbled by your support and consider it a caring and warm welcome. Thank you. This past week, at the invitation of Rabbi Randy Kafka of Temple Kol Tikvah, members of the Interfaith Group met with Representative Lou Kafka and his aide Mark Hogan to express concerns about the efforts currently underway in the Massachusetts Legislature to effect Criminal Justice reform. It was a very productive meeting and a number of concerns were raised. Among them Repealing Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Drug Offenders and Shortening the Length of time Spent in Solitary Confinement. Rep. Kafka said he would bring these concerns to the attention of Rep. Claire Cronin, Chair of the Judiciary Committee. I will be having a guest in the rectory for the month of August. He is Dr. Lambert Nieme, a native of the Congo and a seminarian studying for the Archdiocese of Boston. Lambert was ordained a transitional deacon (in contrast to a permanent deacon) on June 10 of this year. He will begin his final year at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston at the end of August and will be ordained to the priesthood next May, God willing. ~Fr. Frank Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

What s Happening at OLOS Continue the Conversation Do you ever find yourself wishing that you could hear what other parishioners seated in the pews think about the Gospel message of the day? Talk to the presider about the day s homily? Share your thoughts about the daily readings? Now is your chance to engage more deeply with the Liturgy of the Word through dialogue in community. All parishioners are invited to stay in the church after the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 6th and Sunday, August 20th to Continue the Conversation about the readings for the day and the homily with discussions led by Fr. Daly (August 6th) and Fr. Clooney (August 20th). The readings for Sunday, August 6th are Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14, 2 Peter 1:16-19, and Matthew 17: 1-9. Have you wondered what the difference between palliative care and hospice care is? Presented by the Archdiocese of Boston s Initiative for Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning. Please RSVP Monica O Brien by email at mobrien@olossharon.org for refreshment planning purposes. Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Sharon, MA Our Lady of Sorrows Parish From Senior Deacon Mike: We are at the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary time. The first reading recalls the plea of Solomon to seek the wisdom of God to understand the complexity of ruling over his people. In his request, Solomon said Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?" Separation, Divorce and Beyond September 10th through November 12th Separation and divorce is painful, often shattering. Blessed Sacrament Parish in Walpole is offering a 10 week program, facilitated by a group of Catholics who have themselves endured separation and divorce. This program is designed to offer support and healing for those who have experienced a failed marriage and offer hope for the prospect of better tomorrows by discussing subjects such as anger, self-image, loneliness, blame and guilt. The program consists of 10 meetings on Sunday evenings from 7 to 8:30 PM, held in the parish Community Room. If interested in learning more or to sign up for this program, please contact either Jeanie Mattila at 508-384-8779 or jean.matte6@gmail.com or John Meuleman at 781-982- 6097 or jamnd65@gmail.com. Sign up by September 5th. Support One Of Our Scouts! Miguel von Fedak, a 17-year-old boy scout, is collecting funds for his Eagle Scout service project. He will be replacing 240 feet of worn-down fencing in the backyard of the Bullock Center where the church hosts outdoor barbecues, fundraisers, and community activities. The current fence is rotting away and poses a safety hazard for children playing on the new playground built by Eagle Scout Daniel Dudziak. Any support you give will help beautify the backyard and make the area safer for the community s use. If you wish to contribute, donations can be placed in one of the envelopes in the back of the church or given at the Parish Office, or placed in the collection basket. Checks can be made payable to Our Lady of Sorrows with Eagle Scout Project on the memo line. Please help out in any way you can! Thank you! Worldwide Marriage Encounter Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart. Help encourage understanding hearts in your marriage by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next WWME Weekends are Sep 16-17, 2017 in Medway, MA and Oct 21-22, 2017 in Contoocook, NH. For more information, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at 800-710-9963 or visit us at https://wwmema.org/. Welcome to Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. We encourage all our parishioners who worship with us to register. Our registry is a vital source of connection we use to communicate and build community. Please call the Parish office at 781-784-2265, or return this form to the Parish Office via the collection basket, mail, or in person. Thank you.
