We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary), where the service is streaming. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession All: Confession The Reverend Rebecca Davis Gracious God, we confess that we have not lived as you have called us to live. In our vain attempts to be what the world expects us to be, we have neglected to be who you created us to be, and misunderstood what greatness truly means. We have sought power, wealth, and influence instead of peace, compassion, and forgiveness. We have turned our backs on the needs all around us in order to fulfill our own desires. Forgive us, we pray. Cleanse our hearts and restore us to fullness of relationship with you and with one another. One: In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Prayer for Illumination Proclamation First Church is a worship education experience for children in kindergarten through 2nd grade. *Affirmation of Faith Response The Reverend Chuck Williamson (from The Confession of 1967) We acknowledge that God s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of human minds. We ascribe to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But in Jesus Christ God reveals love by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful people. The power of God s love in Christ transforms the world and discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of his love. The sanctuary flowers are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Catherine and Joe Grier by their family. Prayers of the People Stewardship of Life Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Anthem Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus Dan Forrest Let us ever walk with Jesus, follow his example pure through a world that would deceive us, where to sin our hearts are lured. Ever in his footsteps treading, living here, yet home above, full of faith and hope and love, let us do our father s bidding. Faithful Lord, abide with me; Savior, lead, I follow thee. Let us also die with Jesus; by his cross he conquered death, freed us from our souls destruction, quickened us with life s new breath. Let us mortify, while living, self and pride, and die to sin, and the grave that shuts us in shall but prove the gate to heaven. Jesus, here I die to thee, there to dwell eternally. Let us gladly live with Jesus, he is risen from the dead. Death is swallowed up in victory; Jesus, thou art now our head. Living members of thy body, where we shall be, keep us constantly; even so, dear Lord, come quickly; Jesus, here, I live to thee, there to dwell eternally. *Doxology (Hymn No. 606) old hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Prayer of Dedication and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. First Fellowship Fellowship is an important part of Congregational Care. The time and consideration we provide one another is vital to keeping this church vibrant and nourished to continue to be for Christ in the Heart of Charlotte. Starting this winter, we will begin offering a variety of First Fellowship gatherings. These are opportunities for members and friends of our church to gather for fun and fellowship both within the walls of the church and beyond. Among these opportunities will be neighborhood/area-wide gatherings in church members homes. The church will help with logistics and other support, we just need hospitable hosts. If you are interested in hosting a group gathering in your home (anytime between now and May), or have other ideas for fellowship, please contact Mary Margaret Porter (mporter@firstpres-charlotte.org). In Loving Memory of Thomas Ross Cook, Sr. September 30, 1947 - October 17, 2018 Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, says the Spirit. Revelation 14:13
*Hymn No. 620 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing: Praise the everlasting King. 2 Praise him for his grace and favor to his people in distress; praise him still the same as ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless: Glorious in his faithfulness. Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven 3 Fatherlike, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Widely yet his mercy flows. 4 Angels, help us to adore him; you behold him face to face. Sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space: Praise with us the God of grace. *Hymn No. 450 Be Thou My Vision 1 Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art; thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. 2 Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my soul s shelter, and thou my high tower; raise thou me heavenward, O Power of my power. 3 Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise; thou, mine inheritance, now and always; thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art. 4 High King of Heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. *Hymn No. 744 1 Arise, your light is come! The Spirit s call obey; show forth the glory of your God, which shines on you today. 2 Arise, your light is come! Fling wide the prison door; proclaim the captives liberty, good tidings to the poor. Arise, Your Light Is Come 3 Arise, your light is come! All you in sorrow born, bind up the brokenhearted ones and comfort those who mourn. 4 Arise, your light is come! The mountains burst in song! Rise up like eagles on the wing; God s power will make us strong.
