Question: Why do we use candles to bless throats and why on the feast of St. Blaise? Answer: St. Blaise was bishop of Sebaste in Cappadocia, and was martyred by beheading about A.D. 316. Not much more can be affirmed of him with any degree of historical accuracy, but legends about him are numerous. One day-- so goes the legend--blaise met a poor woman whose only pig had been snatched up in the fangs of a wolf but at the command of the bishop the wolf restored the pig alive to its owner. The woman did not forget the favor, for later, when the bishop was languishing in prison, she brought him tapers to dispel the darkness and gloom. To this story may be attributed the practice of using lighted candles in bestowing the blessing of St. Blaise. While in prison he performed a wonderful cure on a boy who had a fishbone lodged in his throat and who was in danger of choking to death. From this account we have the longtime custom of invoking the Saint for all kinds of throat trouble. Please pray for the success of the Saint Mary of the Hills and Saint Elizabeth Collaborative. May we open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to work within and among us. May we intentionally seek to lead others to Jesus through our actions and build His Church in our community. 2

SAINT MARY AND SAINT ELIZABETH PARISHES SAINT MARY AND SAINT ELIZABETH FROM the COLLABORATAIVE PASTOR s DESK Disciples in Mission Workshop for Milton Collaborative of St. Mary of the Hills and St. Elizabeth When: March 4 th and 5 th from 5:30pm-9:00pm Where: St. Elizabeth church lower hall What is this workshop and why is it important?: (These are the most important questions) In June, we began our collaboration to make our parishes stronger and more life-giving centers of faith. As we have started to work together, we are in need of having a shared language and common vision for what we are desiring to live. This workshop will help to inspire us and think about how to grow our parishes. As every thriving family or group of friends share a common vision, so this workshop is meant to help us do so in our collaborative. The workshop is advertised as follows: The Basics Forming Disciples in Mission is a one-day or twoevening session that will support all those involved in a Collaborative to develop a common language and skill set for the work of the New Evangelization. During the session, participants will learn how to share personal testimony and form disciples, develop an understanding of what makes evangelizing parishes, and discuss practical ways to evangelize in parish life. The Audience: staff and parishioners Content: It will touch upon such topics as The New Evangelization: Teaching the Art of Living, Discipleship, Journey of Discipleship: Drawing Closer to Christ, Evangelizing Parishes: Becoming Centers for the New Evangelization. Please consider attending as an opportunity to grow in faith and community. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Bennett in person, via email or phone. PRAYER to SAINT MICHAEL Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. From the Pastor As I was praying the Mass last week with all of you, there was something that St. Paul mentioned in his letter to the Corinthians that reminded me of what a significant amount of my time has been about recently: administration. In particular, I have been trying to get a sense of the condition of the churches and rectory/ office buildings. We have been able to make some improvements recently (roofing at St. Mary s, more efficient heating at St. Elizabeth rectory, lighting at both churches ). I am working with someone who is helping to compile a report for all the maintenance and facility needs for both parishes. When this is completed, I will first share this with the finance and pastoral councils. It is going to take some months and probably will not be ready until Spring. As we are preparing for the future needs of our parish physical needs, so we are also preparing for our Lenten journey. Lent begins March 6 th. We are in need of volunteers from both parishes that will help to host Lenten suppers at each parish on Friday nights (March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5, 12). This was a spiritually enriching event last year for many people and I want to invite all to be a part of it again this year. Recently, someone who is interested in getting involved more in parish life asked me what they could do. I recommended that she go to the Disciples in Mission workshop that is mentioned in the bulletin (next to this column). I wrote about this a few weeks ago but I want to again bring it to your attention. A few parishioners have already attended this and they found it to be very helpful. Please visit the link for more information: https:// disciplesinmission.com/formingdisciples Finally, please note that every Wednesday from 6-7pm at St. Elizabeth there is Eucharistic Adoration and an opportunity for Confession. We began this during Advent and will continue to have it every week. A blessed week to you and your loved ones. In Christ, Fr. Bennett 6

4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 3, 2019 SAINT MARY AND SAINT ELIZABETH COLLABORATIVE This past fall we had a bereavement support group held in our parish collaborative. It was hosted by a Bereavement Specialist from Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care of MA. A number or parishioners attended the group over a 6 week period and found it very helpful. There will be another 6-week bereavement support group held in our collaborative. It will take place every Tuesday night in the lower hall of St. Elizabeth from 6pm to 7/7:30pm, from March 12 th until April 16 th. This group is an effective and healthy way for us to acknowledge the sadness we have from losing a loved one and how to continue living with the memory of him/her. This group helps to provide a community in which we can help one another to live with gratitude for the gift of life and to live with the hope of seeing God and our beloved dead. Cursillo is a short course in Christianity. In Cursillo, you encounter Christ in a small community of the Church, in order to deepen your own faith and strengthen your ability to be a witness of Christ in the world. So That You May Know By Harry Feldmann, pastoral associate The following article is from a homily by the Bishop of Little Rock, AR, Anthony Taylor. When the Apostles asked Jesus to teach them to pray it wasn't so much about what to say but "how to pray." Bishop Anthony said that "Jesus gives us six of what I call the "seven P's of prayer, which are presence, praise, purpose, petition, pardon, protection and persistence." "Our Father who art in heaven" -PRESENCE: We begin prayer by consciously placing ourselves in God's presence reminding ourselves we are in conversation with the Lord. "Hallowed be Thy name." PRAISE: We recall we are before the God in whose presence we have come: He is our Master and we are His servants. "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is heaven." PURPOSE: We commit ourselves to building His kingdom, and not our own kingdoms. Give us this day our daily bread." PETITION: We proceed to ask God to provide us with all that we need, not just in general, but all specific needs. Notice that this not everything we might desire. "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" PARDON: We dare to ask for this pardon only to the degree that we are willing to extend it to others. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil." PROTECTION: We ask for protection from dangers within, temptations. And from evils from outside of us, including disasters of every sort. These six elements should be present any time we pray. In this way, Jesus is not just giving us one prayer to say - the Lord's prayer - He's also giving us a framework to guide us in all of our prayer, whatsoever the words we use. We place our self in God's presence, praise Him, commit to doing His will, petition him regarding our needs, pardon others, and seek His protection. 4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 3, 2019 SAINT MARY OF THE HILLS PARISH New Devotional Candles in St. Mary s upper church As some of you have already noticed, we have a new devotional candle stand in the upper church. It is on the left hand side as you walk in the front doors of the church. There are three rows of candles. The two lower rows of teal blue candles are able to be lit for daily devotional intentions. The white candles on the upper row are reserved as our perpetual candles. They are reserved for monthly or yearly intentions. At the bottom of this page, you will see an example of the order form for reserving these candles. They may be requested in memory of/in honor of someone or for a particular intention. They are a great way of inviting others to pray for your intention and to let others know that they are being prayed for here at St. Mary of the Hills. Another way to use these candles is to have one lit in honor of a recently deceased family member or friend instead of sending flowers. The parish would send out a card letting the family know that their loved one is being remembered with our candle here.at the church. Religious Education Our religious education team is now in the Collaborative Office. Call ( 617-696-0120) or email smhjregan@gmail.com to help with any of these programs. Schedules are downloadable from the parish website: SmhMilton.org/parish life/religious education Family Formation: Next Family Formation will be held on Thursday evening February 7 @ 6:00 pm in the SMH lower church. Edge: Edge resumed on Monday January 28 @ 7:00. We will continue our semester on the Holy Spirit to help the youth recognize that throughout time the Holy Spirit has been preparing to gather all people together into one family of God which is the Church. Confirmation Preparation: Grade 10: Saturday, March 9 @ 9:30-3:30 Retreat Day 4 Life in Christ The Parish Fellowship Coffee Hour This is held every Sunday @ 11:00 12:00 and NEEDS VOLUNTEERS to BAKE/BUY goodies. This could be a monthly service and you would need only to bake or buy the treat and leave it in the lower church by 10:00 am on your scheduled Sunday. It would be great to have as many volunteers as possible so that this service would not seem like a chore. Please get in touch with the Religious Ed office. If you would like to host a Coffee Hour and get to know more of your fellow parishioners and meet new friends, please mention that when you call. Hosting basically entails setting up the coffee, etc. and then cleaning up afterwards. We would greatly appreciate your help. This Coffee Hour is for all of us, not just the Religious Education families. Let s build our parish community together! St. Mary of the Hills Perpetual Candle I would like to reserve a candle for: One year ($350) OR One month ($40) (Circle one) In MEMORY / HONOR of: Your name: Your address: Your phone: Email: Please submit this form and your check, payable to St. Mary of the Hills, to the parish office Mon-Friday 9am-4pm 9
