Page 2 P A S T O R S CORNER Greetings, I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits. It is time to step up and get involved! As baptized Catholics all of us have a responsibility to live as Disciples of our Lord who calls us to serve. This is a huge parish and there are many opportunities to live the Gospel message of love, compassion and concern for others. Our parish is in need of your help in several areas: Fr. John Henderson Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Hospitality Ministers. We need strong readers at mass who are willing to proclaim the good news. We need Eucharistic Ministers to assist the presider at Mass to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ. We need Ministers of welcome to greet parishioners and new comers at the doors of our church. If we do not get enough Eucharistic Ministers we might have to only distribute the Body of Christ and not the Blood at mass. I know of parishes that do not have enough help and therefore cannot distribute the cup. Imagine not having any greeters at the doors of the church, no one to take up the collection and pass out the bulletins. Core Members for our Youth Ministry. My brothers and sisters we need your help to teach, guide and lead our youth (6 th grade 12 th grade). If we are to have an excellent youth ministry then we must be there for them. Without the necessary help then we cannot have a youth ministry program in our parish and believe me that would be disastrous. One person cannot lead 200 youth. If you are interested in working with middle school children or high school age teens then please help. Our Middle School students will meet on Wednesdays from 6:00 7:15 PM and our High School Youth will meet on Sunday Evenings from 5:00 7:00 PM. We need help with our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation). This is a very important ministry which serves the needs of those interested in being baptized. We need help with our Confirmation Program. I am predicting that we will have over 100 teens (freshmen and sophomores) preparing for this important Sacrament. This class will be held once a month on Sunday mornings. For all of these ministries there will be training. If you have never done it before there will be help. PLEASE consider being a part of the action. Give me a call on my cell 541-230-4494 if you are interested. I would love to meet with you. Junior and seniors can also help in leadership roles. Now is the time to listen to Jesus call! I will be running this letter for several weeks hoping that someone hears the call. Have a great Week! We have a great parish! Now is the time for growth, for action and for love! Have a great week. Your friend, Father John

Attendees included Mary, Gerlinde, Kathy, Veronica, Donna, Susie, Cindy, and Kevin. The Commission made the following decisions: The target for the minimum number of survey responses is 200. The survey schedule was extended through the Summer. A number of actions will be taken to advertise the survey and promote responses, including an out reach during the fellowship time after Sunday masses. The next meeting is scheduled for July 21 st and all are welcome to attend! Window into Divine Mercy Being a devout Catholic means living life to the fullest using all of the graces God gives us. One of the three patron saints chosen for World Youth Day was Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati. He was chosen specifically because he intensely took advantage of the many graces God gave him. Both St. Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis warned against vegetating in life, which was the warning of Bl. Frassati. Bl. Frassati lived in Turin, Italy during the first half of the 20th C. He came from wealth, was brought up strictly, but in a home in which religion was not emphasized. He attributed his deep faith to his grandmother and two failed exams which took him to a new school run by Jesuits. He belonged to several religious organizations and with his friends formed one himself. He was a very handsome young man who was an excellent student and very athletic, climbing mountains and skiing. He also partied, joked, and enjoyed life sharing it with friends. Bl. Frassati was very devoted to the poor going into poverty areas offering help. He claimed his energy came from prayer. He stated that Christ came to him daily in the Eucharist and so he in thanksgiving went to Christ in the poor. Bl. Frassati died at the age of 24. Thousands attended his funeral among which were the poor. St. Pope John Paul II said at his beatification that, Bl. Frassati showed that life with God is an unbelievable happening and holiness is accessible to everyone. The relics of Bl. Frassati were brought to Cracow for WYD in a simple wooden coffin and laid at the altar of a Dominican church where many services were held asking for his intercession. The church was swarmed with young people presenting themselves and their lives to this wonderful blessed. His presence could be very intensely felt there. After WYD, his relics were taken back to where they lie in a chapel next to the Shroud of Turin. Jesus, I trust in You - Losia Radominski

We begin a new study on Aug 4th, using the book and DVD of the same name: Saying Yes by Fr Albert Haase, OFM. We will focus on answering the questions What is God asking of me? Time to relax, time to take a break - from school, from work, from rainy weather (well, mostly, we do live in Northwest Oregon). Yet during this restful time, let us remember we are still in the Jubilee Year of Mercy. A year in which Pope Francis has asked us to pay special attention to works of mercy. So here s a refresher from Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill and pray for the living and the dead. --Pope Francis

If you would like to be part of next year s planning - simply email - glamer@satigard.org It s not too soon to start planning! During the month of August our faith community is collecting school supplies that are given to the Tigard/Tualatin School District for distribution to families who are living at poverty level or lower. You can place the supplies in the container in Francis hall or bring them to the Parish Office. This is an opportunity to share with your children and friends the Corporal Acts of Mercy - assisting people in need. It provides us with an opportunity to share the gospel with friends when we ask Natural Family Planning If you are interested in learning about Natural family Planning, a class is being offered this fall at Northwest Family Services. Some facts about blood needs: Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood More than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day The average blood red sell transfusion is about 3 pints A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood Four types of products can be derived from blood, red cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate. Si nunca lo has hecho antes habrá ayuda. Tu amigo, Fr. John
