St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Fourth Sunday of EASTER Veni, Vidi, Vici, et tum discessi I came, I saw, I conquered, and then I left. Such were the words on my final Latin exam after six years of study in the great language. I can t recall the response the teacher gave in Latin should have taken that seventh year. Just teasing. I was reminded of those words in meeting up with Dick and Sue Meeker recently while they were visiting from their new home in Virginia Beach. Many of us remember them for their wonderful example in the devotions to the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy each day. With hard work and great humility they won the hearts of all of us. In the life of the parish they were like true godparents to all of us. They were among many other godparents such as the Regans, the Maybachs, and the lovely Pat Minihan who have come and gone. Blessed figures followed by many others still, who, like lighthouses, shine in example of the Faith for all of us. For what we had and who are in this wonderful parish we call home, let us rejoice and be glad. In these weeks following Easter let us also rejoice and be glad in those who recently joined the Church at the Easter Vigil. They are complimented with many others who have joined the Faith during the past year. And there are still others, seeking annulments, that they may be free to enter the Church. You might see them coming up for a blessing at Communion time. One of my favorite stories lies in the grandmother so zealous in her efforts to become a Catholic. Last year none of the kids showed up for the May crowing so I asked for a volunteer. And wouldn t you know, that little grandmother went scaling up the ladder to set the crown on the head of the Blessed Mother. Never was the crown set so joyfully by one so humbly seeking to one day receive the Body of Christ. See you at the 12:30pm Mass on Sunday May 14 th, for this year s May Crowning. That said, any folks seeking assistance with annulments are welcome to give me a call and come for a visit. We can see what we can do. During the year I very much enjoy attending the sporting, and cultural events of those kids, in our high school CCD classes. I also write letters of recommendation in their regard. They are terrific kids and offer an incredible hope for the Church. Oh, please, I don t mean to canonize them as some, as the Irish say, have a bit of the demon in them. Ha! Ha! Ha! Anyway, I digress. A few weeks ago young Megan McCoy, from Fauquier High School was in a program where students voluntarily stood up to sing and entertain all comers with their personal talents. It was an exceptional night where everyone was a winner. It could be reviewed in three dimensions. First, the kids who sang and danced were phenomenal. Truthfully, how many of the rest of us would set our egos aside for such an event? Uhm, I suspect precious few. Second, the student audience response with its lively applause for each of the contestants was great, revealing a terrific enthusiasm in their school fraternity/sorority. And lastly, the parents and faculty complimented with the presence of the Fauquier principal, Mr. Trip Burton. He is at all the school events. You might think he lives at the place. Anyway, their support and encouragement really sets a higher standard for the students to excel in the academics, arts and athletics. They are very much like the good people found at Kettle Run, Liberty and other private schools. If you want to get a sense for the future please go look at our high schools. Start with Meg McCoy. She is one of the many, many terrific kids. All right, all right. Speaking of terrific kids, next Saturday, May 13 th is the day for First Communion. Life rarely rises above the excitement of First Communion. The little munchkins get it. You can see it in their eyes. Jesus Christ is the one they come to receive, no one else. The fanfare, with grandparents and godparents, along with dresses and suits, are nice. But, it is Jesus Christ they come to receive. Let us all rejoice and be glad. And, let us pray for one another. Collegiate answer: The visionary for the Divine Mercy devotions was a young religious by the name of Sr. Faustina Kowalska. She was a Polish Catholic Nun and Mystic who helped change the world in the devotion to the Mercies of Christ. Jesus, I place my trust in you. Collegiate question: What great Jewish scientist was considered to be the first leader of the Jewish State of Israel, founded in 1947? Fr. Gould 4

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 7 May 2017 Greetings, Last week, our Church celebrated the greatest mystery of our faith: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior. As a school community, we prayerfully prepared for our journey into the three holiest days of the year, the Triduum. Our Kindergarten students were given the opportunity to strengthen their faith by reenacting the Last Supper. I was told it was quite a sight to see and there were no shortage of young boys wanting to play the active roles. Many thanks to Mrs. Galvin, our teachers, and school families for supporting the Patron Saint of the Poor Program lead by the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. We collected coins in each classroom over several weeks and I am pleased to announce that over $850.00 in coins was collected in total. Mrs. Neil wrote a beautiful card and urged our students to keep their coin pouches and collect on a monthly basis. I will pray that many of our families will accept this challenge. May we continue to grow in God's grace and wisdom. Principal Macdonald St. John the Evangelist Preschool/Pre-Kindergarten: Thank you to all of the families who have registered for the 2017-2018 Preschool year. St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 7 May 2017 Why Fatima? Our Blessed Mother - Mary Immaculate approached three shepherd children alerting them to spread the message of the Rosary; so man would correct his ways of error, or face the consequences of sin, through war and persecution. Her message was clear and simple: Pray, Please pray very much and offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High. And, as noted by Saint Pope John XXIII: My day must be one long prayer, prayer is the breath of life. I propose to recite all fifteen decades of the Rosary every day, if possible, in the chapel before the Blessed Sacrament. Please join us on May 6 th for the 1 st Saturday of the Month Rosary (following the 8:30 A.M. Mass). And, on May 13, for the Centennial celebration of our Lady s first apparition to the three children on May 13, 1917. And so poignantly pointed out by Saint Pope John Paul II: The message of Fatima is more relevant and more urgent than when our Lady first appeared. WOMEN OF ST. JOHN S On the weekend of May 6 th and 7 th the Women of St. John s will be conducting the Dollars for Moms Collection to support A Best Choice Mobile Unit which is a mobile unit that visits college campuses and abortion clinics in Northern Virginia. SPECIAL MOTHER S DAY MASSES. As part of our Parish s commemoration of the 100-Year Anniversary of the appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the children at Fatima, we will welcome Father Francis Peffley to three Masses on Mother s Day, Sunday, May 14. Father Peffley will preach on the message of Fatima, which included dire warnings, urgent requests and inspiring promises by Our Blessed Mother, a message as prophetic and profound today as it was 100 years ago. Father Peffley will speak at the 9:00, 10:45 and 12:30 Mother s Day Masses. Father Peffley was the founding pastor of Holy Trinity Parish and his strong devotion to Our Blessed Mother is especially exemplified by his service to the Legion of Mary, which he joined at age 10. For a sample of Father Peffley speaking on Fatima early in his priesthood, give a listen to this recording on his website: http://www.fatherpeffley.org/audios/2028%2 0The%20Message%20of%20Fatima_The%20 Rosary.mp3 Look in this and future bulletins for important information about other special Parish activities and events celebrating the 100 th Anniversary of Fatima.
