News at First Monthly Newsletter of First United Methodist Church April 2019 Our mission is to see Christ in every person we encounter and demonstrate to them the love of God and the teachings of Jesus. A Note From David Dear Fellow Ministers, This is the month! We get to celebrate that which defines us: Easter! Our Lenten journey has begun well, and we are thankful for the opportunity to worship together (in person or on-line). Please join us in worship this month, and consider inviting others to come to worship with you. Here is our plan: April 7 Lift Up The Hurting- John 12:1-8 (Lay Reading Isaiah 43:16-21) April 14 Palm Sunday; Lift Up The Healed- Philippians 2:5-11 (Lay Reading Luke 19:28-40) Holy Week Services (be looking for more detail): Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil April 21 EASTER: Luke 24:1-12 (Lay Reading I Corinthians 15:19-26) April 28 NEW SERIES: Living Empty Handed: Abram (Lay Reading Genesis 12:1-9 Matthew 28:16-20) In our new series starting on April 28, we are going to look at examples in scripture who gave up whatever they were spiritually holding on to in order to hold on to God. Thank you for all you do to be the Kingdom of God in this community! Let s keep at it I look forward to being in ministry with you in April! Thank you FUMC for collecting non-parishable items, and raising $3769.20 for Crisis Assistance Ministry in March! -Outreach Ministry Team Extra Mile Giving Our church is blessed to have a $1.7 million budget while investing in a $5 million+ new building and renovation! God is at work among us. Our 2019 budget projections, even after some serious expense reductions, have resulted in our revenue being about $96,000 less than needed. Our church leaders are asking, if you are able, would you consider giving an extra $125 per quarter? We are choosing to give it on 5th Sundays (mostly because it is EASY to remember)! We are asking folks to give over and above what you may have already committed, if you are able. Your church leaders take very seriously producing a balanced budget for our church. THANK YOU for considering this opportunity to give! We are so thankful for the way you love this church through your generosity. This appeal will be in our bulletin, e-blast, and newsletter only one time as we attempt to bridge our 5.5% deficit, because we want to keep our emphasis on ministry. Thank you! Would you mind indicating (only seen by the Finance Office) whether or not you would be willing to participate in this way? You may drop this form in the offering plate or call the church Finance Office. The 5th Sunday months are March, June, September, and December. Name: I/we plan to give $ over and above our pledge for 2019 in extra mile giving.

April 2019 Lots of progress on our building project here at FUMC in March! Already busy at sunrise: pouring footings for the wall of the new building. Ceiling tiles were laid in the new ceiling grid in March. Door moldings and chair rails received a primer coat of paint, as did all the walls. Some sunny, dry days in March allowed the first wall of the new building to be poured in the forms. Oakland St. was partially closed for 2 days while crews installed under-street utility service. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL walking in the main parking lot. The surface is very uneven due to all the site work being done. Please help us keep the parking lot lanes open by NOT parking in areas that will block the flow of traffic, especially near the new ramp. You will see traffic cones placed to help direct you through the parking lot. We have lost a significant amount of parking (temporarily) due to construction. Please use the Conference Center parking lot and Wells Fargo Bank lot for additional parking. There will be plenty of parking lot greeters to help direct you. Your patience and understanding are GREATLY APPRECIATED! Keep up with the latest information about this exciting project by visiting the Weaving web site https://weavingfumcg.com/ and reading the "Yellow Hat Report" each Friday via email and each month in the Newsletter. Releasing Your Butterfly You are invited to bring your butterfly with you to church on Easter Sunday, April 21st. We will celebrate Easter with several services that day. Around 10:40am, following a light breakfast in the FLC, we will release all the butterflies around the campus (weather permitting). Please make sure you label your habitat so that none are lost in the hustle and bustle of Easter morning celebrations. We anticipate having plenty of butterflies to release! Butterfly orders are ready for pick-up in the FLC. If you are unable to come to FUMC on Easter morning, release your butterflies wherever you might be! What a glorious way to celebrate our risen Lord! Service Times 6:30 am Sunrise Service in the Memory Garden 8:45 am Traditional Service & 162East Service 9:45 am Butterfly Breakfast (light breakfast in the Gym) 11:00 am Worship Services in the Sanctuary In order for a caterpillar to become what God created it to be -- a butterfly -- it must give up everything it knows. It must give up crawling, and it must give up eating leaves. Once the caterpillar becomes a butterfly, it will never look or feel like a caterpillar again; but being a butterfly is a million times better than being a caterpillar! Think about how beautiful and free the butterfly is! The story of the butterfly reminds us of the story of Jesus death and resurrection and our promise of eternal life. The butterfly is a symbol of that new life -- of God's love which lives in each of us and wants to fill every part of our life! Faith Development Note: The older child (elementary age) is just beginning to understand these concepts. The younger child (preschool age), by experiencing the butterfly s story, is laying a foundation for later understanding. Let the child take from this experience what he/she is able to and be satisfied in knowing that his/ her faith is growing.
