CATHOLIC EDUCATION NEWS AT THE ATONEMENT ACADEMY Private Schools Interscholastic Association Competition Last Saturday 78 Atonement students competed in the Private Schools Interscholastic Association s annual academic competition. We had 139 entries in 17 different categories, with many students competing in more than 2 categories. All the schools accumulated points for every place in the top 6. Overall Atonement came in first with 955 points, far ahead of the second-place school at 514 points! We took a total of 98 places in the top 6, with 22 first-place wins and 15 second-place wins. All competitors who place in the top 2 are eligible to compete in the State Finals at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in April, so we have 36 opportunities to participate at the State level! Congratulations to all the students who competed! Thank you and congratulations to the teachers who put in so much time and effort to coach the competitors over the past 3 months, and to Terri Garza and all the parent volunteers who helped during the event. Atonement Athletics www.atonement Sports.Org Coaches Corner This past week our High school team competed in the Northside ISD Harlan Invitational. All week players worked hard for this tournament. Both Ana Stallard and Gabriela Santillan both made it to the 2nd round of the tournament before falling to Kerrville Tivy High School, and Boerne High. Anais Garza and Liam Mulgrew both fell first round of the tournament to tough opponents. Liam went on to win his 2nd round in the back draw before also falling to a player from Kerrville Tivy. Daniel Lowe fell short as he played a tough first round against an opponent from Tivy as well. Both Maria Garza and Lily Moore teamed up for some doubles action where they fell to a team from South San High School. Over all every player showed heart and fight this past week. I could not have asked for anything more then what they left on the court. Head Tennis Coach, Victor Martinez Upcoming Games Wed. Upper School Corner Subject: Latin III Grade: Upper School Teacher: Mr. Nicholas Mataya Fides et Ratio Translating the Latin Hymns One of the things I was struck by upon arriving at The Atonement Academy were the great student choirs at daily Mass. Upon consultation with the Music Department, I decided that it would be a good idea, in order to break up the monotony of constantly drilling grammar, to have the students translate some of the Latin hymns that the Upper School choirs would be singing throughout Lent. My Latin III students found this to be both challenging and enjoyable, and we have since moved on to translating more of the psalms and, on the Friday before Easter break, part of Matthew's Passion Narrative. Featured Teacher of the Week This year marks the twentieth year I have been a teacher. I have been at The Atonement Academy for the last twelve years as a fourth grade and middle school teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and Dean of Students. I love attending Mass daily as well as supporting the mission of the school. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know each of the student as it s great to see them grow from a lower school student to an upper school student. I have three children, John, Jane and Juliet, and they have been here since Pre-K. My oldest two, John and Jane will be seniors next year and will be leaving with a great education and a strong catholic faith. I will miss them very much as they leave for college and embark on their new journey. Mrs. Ana Powell Middle School Teacher & Councilor I consider it a privilege to be part of The Atonement Academy and look forward to teaching and guiding for many years to come. Thank you parents for sharing your children and allowing us to grow together.
Lower School Corner Subject: Religion Grade: 2nd Grade Teacher: Mrs. Kristie Weems Preparing to Receive Jesus The Atonement second graders have learned about this sacred conversion of the Eucharist as well as a number of other Catholic traditions and vocabulary. It s an integral part of the learning environment in Mrs. Weems second grade class. Students have spent more than 50 hours in sacramental preparation this school year alone. Last week was a first for most students as they received the Sacrament of Penance with Fr. Lewis, Fr. Moore, or Fr. Phillips. In April, some of them will receive the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation from Bishop Lopes, as we welcome him to our parish on Sunday, April 15 th. It is beautiful to witness the transformation of our students as they begin to understand the significance of these sacraments and how the sacraments play a role in their lives.
