Welcome to this time of worship and prayer. ASSEMBLING IN GOD S NAME WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Welcome to those visiting today! Please fill out a Visitor Card found in the pew rack and place it in the Offering Plate. Also, everyone please pass the red fellowship pad down the pew and back again noticing those with whom you are worshiping today. Prayer Cards are in the pew racks. Please place cards in the basket in front of the pulpit during the Passing of the Peace. Our church is handicapped accessible. There is an area set aside for wheelchairs on the left front section of the theater-type seats we call the Amen Section. Thank you, Tina Vial, for serving as our Liturgist. *Indicates an invitation to stand, if you are able. INTROIT: I Waited Patiently for God (Psalm 40) W. Billings, 1794 CALL TO WORSHIP (Portions of Psalm 46, KJV) Leader: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. All: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Leader: Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. All: The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Leader: Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. All: He maketh wars to cease unto the ends of the earth he breaketh the bow and cutteth the spear in sunder, he burneth the chariot in the fire. Leader: Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted in the earth. ALL: The Lord of hosts is with us. OPENING PRAYER (ALL in unison) O Lord, on bended knees we come to you to praise, give thanks, and seek help in our lives. We seek forgiveness, we seek salvation, and we seek love. Bring us close, 2

transform us to your Will, so that we, as persons of faith, do, hear, and see and call out against the tide of godlessness and injustice that we face each day. Heal and correct us so that our words reflect thy Word and our heart is thy heart, now, as we praise you and give thanks to you in this hour of worship. Amen *HYMN #307 God of Grace and God of Glory *CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Merciful God, with your great love for us you have claimed us as your own children. In return, we have not loved you as we should. We have not loved all your children of this world as we have loved ourselves. We have not participated in your purposes and plans as we know we should. We have been faint of heart, weary, and blind. While complacent in the presence of injustice and violence, we deny our own complicity. We have been complacent in the face of social inequality, economic transgressions, educational inequity, and complacency in dealings of health. As a nation we claim self-evident rights, which we, in turn deny to other peoples. Forgive us Lord. Forgive our denials. Forgive our blindness. Forgive our complacency. Our claim that we have not seen you sick or in prison or in need, is chastised by your words: If you have done it for the least of these my brethren, you have done it for me. We see, O Lord, our blindness causes deep sadness for those suffering, and for ourselves. Forgive us, O God. Forgive us. Amen *KYRIE ELEISON (Lord, Have Mercy) Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS (Isaiah 55 & Romans 1) Hear the Good News: He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 3

Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen *THE GLORIA PATRI #581 Glory Be to the Father *SHARING GOD S PEACE PROCLAIMING GOD S WORD SCRIPTURE READING (in unison) New Testament Galatians 3:26-29 Pew Bible pg. 178 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s seed, and heirs according to the promise. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! GOD S WORD FOR THE CHILDREN (After the Children s Time, those younger than first grade may go upstairs with our attendants. Because we value children in our worship service, these younger ones are also welcome to stay with their family during the service at the family s discretion.) HYMN #66 Every Time I Feel the Spirit (refrain only) GOD S WORD FOR OUR LIVES What we have here is a failure to communicate... R. W. Hermanson PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE RESPONDING TO THE GOOD NEWS 4

THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen PRESENTATION OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Anthem: Jesus, Priceless Treasure harm. by J. S. Bach *DOXOLOGY #606 *HYMN #318 Praise God from Whom All Blessing Flow FOLLOWING GOD INTO THE WORLD In Christ There is No East or West BENEDICTION AND BLESSING (in unison) Who is it that shall prophesy? Our sons and our daughters? Who is it that shall see visions? Our young? Who is it that shall dream dreams? Our old? Who is it that shall be righteous before our Lord? I Lord, I will be righteous. And when my neighbor here in this church needs me, I will go. When my neighbor here in this church is anguished, I will cause healing as I can. When we need love, I will love. As persons of faith, we love one another. As persons of faith, we now enter the world to do as we are called to do. Be with us Lord, guide us, shield us, prepare us for the day we are to prophesy. God be with you, my friend, in Christ Jesus. May God be with me! Amen *RESPONSE #354 Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory (verse 3 only) 5

A Vision: (Read to one s self when the opportunity is available) Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
