San Saba First United Methodist Church January 2014 Newsletter San Saba First United Methodist Church 204 W. Brown 325-372-3120 Www.sansabafirstumc.com Rev. Dan Harrington, Pastor We bid you welcome In the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Pray with us, Sing with us, rejoice with us Sunday School 9:00 a.m. Worship 10:00 a.m. Ministers: Entire Congregation Worship Leader: Tracey Thomas Accompanist: Nettie Oma Carpenter Choir Director: Tracey Thomas Church Secr Karen Alexander Custodian: Mario Mendiola From the Pastor s Desk.. Several years ago a friend and colleague introduced me to Ted Loder s book of prayers called, Guerrillas of Grace: Prayers for the Battle. It has been a source of inspiration for me time and time again. The last part of the prayer I Hold My Life Up To You Now is my prayer for the new year. Patient God, in this teetering time, this time in the balance, this time of waiting, make me aware of moments, moments of song, moments of bread and friends, moments of jokes (some of them on me) Which, for a moment, deflate my pomposities; moments of sleep and warm beds, moments of children laughing and parents bending, moments of sunsets and sparrows outspunking winter, Moments when broken things get mended with glue or guts or mercy or imagination; moments when splinters shine and rocks shrink, moments when I know myself blest, Not because I am so awfully important, but because you are so awesomely God, no less of the year to come as of all the years past; no less of this moment then all my moments; no less of those who forget you as those who remember, as I do now, in this teetering time. Oh patient God, make something new in me, in this year, for you. Continued on next page 1

Continued from page one. Peter would love to hear from You. His address is: Peter Hald 205 E. Story San Saba TX 76877 Meals on Wheels December 23 thru Friday January 3 Thanks to Everyone Who is Helping!!!! This January many of us will make resolutions (again). Among the most popular resolutions are loose weight, eat healthy foods, exercise more, spend more time with family and friends, etc. Did you know that resolutions have religious origins? The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. Traditionally at watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making resolutions. Here s something that I hope you consider this New Years: find ways to love more. Paul writes in Colossians Colossians 3: 13-14 to Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. What ways will you find ways to love more in 2014? It can be as simple as a smile and a hug, an invitation to lunch or a visit. In 2014 may we be Christians who are known by one thing our love. May God Bless you and keep you in 2014 and always, Pastor Dan Prayer Concerns Fellowship Of Christian Women January 23rd At FUMC James & Pat Reavis Raymond Barrier Ronnie Schmidt Pat Belk s sister Peter Hald Suzanne Walters Carol Littlefield Sue Moody Church, town & nation Military Men, Women & Families 2

Our Church Family It has been a busy month for our church family with lots of activities. It was a great Sunday service when Braylee Reeves, daughter of Brad & Jennifer Reeves, was baptized. She certainly brought lots of family with her. Jennifer Reeves, Mike & Tracey Thomas and Pastor Dan sang a special song that was wonderful. It was a great service. Suzanne Walters fell at her assisted living in Arlington. The good news is that there were no broken bones but she was bruised. Debbie Pullen is at home now recovering from her surgery. It is certainly good to see Pat Belk back in the choir. Stephen & Karen Alexander have had a daughter come and visit. Then it was a son and his family that came. They are headed to Austin on Christmas Day to see more family and then on the last week-end of the month they will be in West Texas. George Kidd and his brother made their annual trip to New Mexico for some hunting. Guess what!! They both got an elk. Bruce Schanhals reports that he sold the hardware store. Selfishly we hope that means they will be spending more time in San Saba County. Lee & Kelly Murray were out of town for the week-end. Guess who was babysitting their son, Wiley? None other than grandparents, Sam & Laina Murray. They looked like they were having a grand time. Lesa Schulze was beaming from ear to ear when she announced at church that daughter & son-in-law Corey & Shane Dyson are expecting another child. A group of about 35 from our church made 10 stops caroling church members before heading back to FUMC for some of David Gilger s chili. Other food donations were made by Christie Thornton, Cherry Kay Lange and Linda Parks. What a joy the Christmas Cantata was!!! The music was great and then what a great time of fellowship when everyone moved downstairs for some wonderful food!!! Then it was such a treat to have the children be involved in a Christmas Program acting out the Christmas Story. They did a great job with Pastor Dan as the narrator. This edition of the church newsletter is coming out early as Mike, Carolyn & Jess McDowell are headed to Ruidoso New Mexico on December 26th for a little vacation. Thanks for your understanding. The Bell & Schulze families have celebrated Christmas with a waffle supper ever since they have been neighbors on Commerce Street. It has been a tradition for over 20 years. Jantzen Bell will play some basketball over the Christmas holidays and is going to visit Bud s family in Chillicothe. Ted & Klela have enjoyed having Klela s son, daughter-in-law and family for a Christmas celebration at their house. 3 3
