Evensong Thursday in Third Week After Epiphany 31 January 2019 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cadral. Choral Evensong marks end of working day and prepares for approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in 16th century, created this form as part of simplification of services within newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on business of past day, to pray for world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of music is offered to help us set our lives in light of eternity; same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Méditation Louis Vierne Opening Sentence Preces Officiant The people stand as procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Bernard Rose Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost; As it was in beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. A men. Praise ye Lord. The Lord s name be praised. Hymn 125 Sung by all. Perry text: John Morison (1749-1798), alt.; para of Isaiah 9:2-7; music: Leo Sowerby (1895-1968), alt. Psalm 27:1, 4-9 Sung by choir, people sit. Herbert Howells (BCP, p. 617) 1

The Readings Isaiah 9:1-4 The Magnificat The people stand. Howells Collegium Royale My soul doth magnify Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on m that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered proud in imagination of ir hearts. He hath put down mighty from ir seat, and hath exalted humble and meek. He hath filled hungry with good things, and rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefars, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: 45 55 Matw 4:12-23 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Howells Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before face of all people, To be a light to lighten Gentiles, and to be glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 2: 29 32 Homily The people sit. The Rev. Jude Harmon Director of Innovative Ministries The Apostles Creed All Sung by all on a monotone, standing. I believe in God, Far almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by Holy Ghost, born of Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on right hand of God Far almighty. From nce he shall come to judge quick and dead. I believe in Holy Ghost, holy catholic Church, communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of body, and life everlasting. Amen. 2

Officiant The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Prayers Rose The Lord s Prayer The Suffrages The Collects Anm Officiant Let us pray. The people may kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Our Far, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon e. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because re is none or that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Sung by officiant. Rose Rose Howells I lift up my eyes to hills from where will my help come? My help comes from Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neir slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and for evermore. Psalm 121 Closing Prayers The people may kneel. The Rev. Canon Nina L. Pickerrell Cadral Deacon 3

The Readings Isaiah 9:1-4 But re will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In former time he brought into contempt land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, but in latter time he will make glorious way of sea, land beyond Jordan, Galilee of nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on m light has shined. You have multiplied nation, you have increased its joy; y rejoice before you as with joy at harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For yoke of ir burden, and bar across ir shoulders, rod of ir oppressor, you have broken as on day of Midian. Matw 4:12-23 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by lake, in territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on road by sea, across Jordan, Galilee of Gentiles people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in region and shadow of death light has dawned. From that time Jesus began to proclaim, Repent, for kingdom of heaven has come near. As he walked by Sea of Galilee, he saw two brors, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his bror, casting a net into lake for y were fishermen. And he said to m, Follow me, and I will make you fish for people. Immediately y left ir nets and followed him. As he went from re, he saw two or brors, James son of Zebedee and his bror John, in boat with ir far Zebedee, mending ir nets, and he called m. Immediately y left boat and ir far, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in ir synagogues and proclaiming good news of kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among people.
