2 The Church of St. George Long Lake, Minnesota WELCOME to... THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE A Letter from the Pastor Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent. In ancient times, palm branches symbolized goodness and victory. They were often depicted on coins and important buildings. Solomon had palm branches carved into the walls and doors of the temple (1 Kings 6:29). Again at the end of the Bible, people from every nation raise palm branches to honor Jesus (Revelation 7:9). The palms are saved in many churches to be burned the following year as the source of ashes used in Ash Wednesday services. The Catholic Church considers the blessed palms to be sacramentals. The vestments for the day are deep scarlet red, the color of blood, indicating the supreme redemptive sacrifice Christ was entering the city to fulfill: his Passion and Resurrection in Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem, and the celebrating people there laid down their cloaks in front of him, and also laid down small branches of trees. The people sang part of Psalm 118: 25 26: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. The symbolism of the donkey may refer to the Eastern tradition that holds that it is an animal Thank you to all our visitors, guests and extended family members for joining us this weekend. Call the office at (952) 473-1247 or email us at stgeorge@msn.com if you would like more information about the parish or to register. of peace, versus the horse, which is the animal of war A king came riding upon a horse when he was bent on war and rode upon a donkey when he wanted to point out he was coming in peace. Jesus' entry to Jerusalem would thus symbolize his entry as the Prince of Peace, not as a war-waging king. The Holy Week and Easter Schedules are published in today s bulletin. I also want to draw your attention to the remaining schedule for the Sacrament of Reconciliation that is posted in this bulletin. Most parishes in the Archdiocese at the recommendation of the Archbishop complete the times for Confession before the Triduum begins on Holy Thursday evening. With a contrite spirit, let each of us approach the throne of God s mercy as we prepare, with a worthy examination of conscience and with sincere sorrow, for the holy Sacrament of forgiveness. The central events of our Redemption in Christ are commemorated in the Holy Week ceremonies and are held most sacred to the Christian faithful as we experience the Triduum this week. I strongly encourage all our parish families to participate fully in all the services of Holy Week. Fr. Mark Juettner Pastor BEST WISHES TO ALEXA GRUBER We say a very fond farewell to our Assistant Music Director Alexa Gruber who has accepted the position of Music Director at St. Maximilian Kolbe in Delano. Alexa started at St. George in June of 2016. During her time here, Alexa led our music ministry during the summer months and one weekend per month. She also conducted the St. George choir on a weekly basis. Alexa has been an instrumental part of our staff, assisting Music Director Kelly Kadlec with many music ministry endeavors - the Advent play, the Festival of Music, and Christmas and Holy Week music. Her talent and creativity have impressed everyone who has worked with her. Alexa is a very accomplished musician, singer, seamstress, decorator, and cook/ baker. The choir will very much miss her excellent direction, her cheerful kindness, and her elaborate homemade costumes for Halloween and Christmas. Father Juettner and the parish staff thank you, Alexa, for the many ways in which you have enriched parish life. We wish you well, Alexa, knowing that you will do wonderful things wherever you are. We will miss your beautiful voice and your beautiful heart and spirit even more! God bless you.

3 PALM SUNDAY APRIL 14, 2019 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS ************************** Next Meeting: May 2, 2019 at 7pm KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SCHOLARSHIP Due May 31st The Father William Nolan Council #12293 has been offering continuing education scholarships to the students at St. George for seven years. Founded by brothers Ray Hoffman, Greg Ehalt and Bill Pollard, the scholarship program started off with a $500 annual offering and has grown to over $2,000 today. The Knights are committed to helping as many of our youth as we can, as they are the future of our parish and beyond. Once again this year, the council is excited to announce scholarships will be offered to St. George high school seniors, current college and vocational technical students, as well as graduates choosing to serve our country. The scholarship program is just one of many ways that our council serves our communities and parish. We have been fortunate enough to have fundraisers help make this scholarship fund a reality and to grow with each passing year. Without the generosity of the parish, this would not be possible. Anyone interested in making a donation to our scholarship fund, please contact Grand Knight, Ed Rundle. Thank you all for your kindness and support of our council. Those interested in applying for this scholarship should look for the scholarship display which is located in the church entrance and on the church website (www.stgeorgelonglake.org). Read through the application and eligibility requirements, fill out the application, and then submit it to the address listed on the attached form. There is not a set number of scholarship awards to be given out it is based upon the applicant pool and funds available in a given year. SAVE THE DATE: Fr. Juettner s 40th Anniversary of Ordination May 18th 4pm Mass followed by a reception May 19th 9:15am Mass followed by a reception May 19th 5pm Mass in Spanish followed by a reception See next weekend s bulletin insert for details. GOOD FRIDAY PONTIFICAL COLLECTION Our parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection. The pontifical collection allows for care of Christianity s holiest sites and for God s people living in the Holy Land. Please be generous in your support! EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS You can remember your loved ones during the Easter season by donating to the Easter Flower Memorial Fund. Envelopes (marked Easter Flowers) are located at the end of the pews. GEORGE WOMEN S COUNCIL Next Meeting: May 2,, 2019 at 10:00am Divine Mercy Sunday April 28 th from 1:30-3:00 pm Church of St. Anne, Hamel What is Divine Mercy Sunday and how can I benefit from it? Divine Mercy Sunday is a privilege Christ has given us in which we can obtain complete forgiveness of sins and complete remission of temporal punishment. This official feast day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. How do I prepare for Divine Mercy Sunday? Jesus asked for a novena of preparation which would begin on Good Friday and end on the Saturday after Easter. He Himself gave the prayers for the novena to St. Faustina. The Novena Prayers are prayed each day along with the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Our Lord promised, By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls. Please see the bulletin insert for the Novena and Chaplet and a flyer with more information on the upcoming celebration. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION in the Chapel The Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament Jesus is waiting for you in the Chapel.
