See Service Book for The Gathering Palm Gospel Luke 19.28-40 Procession into Church PROCESSIONAL HYMNS All glory, laud, and honour To thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the king of Israel, Thou David s royal son, Who in the Lord s name comest, The King and blessed one. The company of angels Are praising thee on high, And mortal men and all things Created make reply. The people of the Hebrews With palms before thee went: Our praise and prayer and anthems Before thee we present. To thee before thy Passion They sang their hymns of praise: To thee now high exalted Our melody we raise. Thou didst accept their praises: Accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest, Thou good and gracious King. St Theodulph of Orleans, tr J M Neale Hark, all the tribes hosanna cry, Thy humble beast pursues his road With palms and scattered garments strowed. In lowly pomp ride on to die: O Christ, thy triumphs now begin O er captive death and conquered sin. The wingèd squadrons of the sky Look down with sad and wondering eyes To see the approaching sacrifice. Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh; The Father on his sapphire throne Awaits his own anointed Son. Ride on, ride on in Majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; bow thy meek head to mortal pain, Then take, O God, thy power, and reign. Henry Milman (1791-1868) Collect (see Service Book p4) First Reading Philippians 2.5-11
Psalm 31.10-18 (see Service Book p5) Passion Gospel Luke 22.14-23.56 During the Passion reading, you are invited to turn to follow the scenes in different parts of the church. Between scenes, the Choir sings these chorales: Here would I stand beside thee; Lord, bid me not depart! From thee I will not sever, though breaks thy loving heart. When bitter pain shall hold thee in agony opprest, Then, then will I enfold thee within my loving breast. Peter in forgetfulness thrice denied his Master: One look moved him to confess, weeping, his disaster. Jesu, turn to look on me, who persist in sinning; Set my fettered conscience free, free for new beginning. Christ who knew no sin or wrong, like a thief was taken, led before a godless throng, by his friends forsaken. He who our salvation won, falsely was convicted, scoffed at, scorned and spat upon, as the Word predicted. Offertory Hymn 439 Praise to the holiest in the height Eucharistic Prayer E (see Service Book p9) Anthem O Saviour of the world - Goss Post Communion (see Service Book p14) Final Hymn Organ 486 we have a gospel to proclaim Prelude and Fugue in G Minor - Buxtehude With thanks to Robin Walker, our organist today After the service coffee, tea and squash are served at the back of Church Next Sunday s Readings: Isaiah 65.17-end; Acts 10.34-43; Luke 24.1-12 6.30pm THE PASSION STORY A reflection in words and music for Holy Week for choir and congregation (See separate sheet)
FOR YOUR DAILY PRAYERS Monday 15 Tuesday 16 Wednesday 17 Thursday 18 Friday 19 Saturday 20 Yesterday we celebrated a joyful procession of palms. Today we begin our journey to the cross and think of those who live with a heavy cross on their backs: the unhappy, those without friends, those suffering with painful ill-health. As we travel through Holy Week and follow the events of Jesus s last days, teach us to live in humility and empty our lives of pride and selfishness. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem, remembering the peoples of modern day Israel and Palestine; for the continued unrest in these lands, disrupting the lives of so many. Lord, as you washed the feet of your disciples, teach us to follow your example of love and care for others. As we draw near to you under the shadow of your cross, help us to grasp the immensity of your love for us. May your promises sustain us through our darkest hours. The disciples had not understood that death is followed by resurrection. When all seems hopeless, help us to keep our faith in God.
