August 2012 Knights of Columbus Lancaster Council 2455 Second Edition of Columbian Year 2012-2013 Council 2455 Website: www.kofc-lancastercouncil2455.org
Tim Loebs My Brother Knights, In past Columbian years, there has been awards and recognition given to members of our council. I would like to bring that tradition back. I see many knights working hard all year long. I see family participation, and I see knight s wives giving all that they have to help out. I believe it is time that we once again recognize these hard working members of our council. That is why I am bringing back the Knight, Knight Family, and Lady Knight of the Month awards. All three awards will be awarded once a month with a certificate. The Knight, Knight Family and Knight Lady of the Year will be awarded with a plaque. Each Knight of the Month will be announced at our Thursday general business meeting. Some of the criteria I will be using to help choose is attendance at general business meetings, attendance at knights events, involvement in council activities, as well as chairing an event, or running a committee. The Knight Family will be announced at each Family Night. I will be keeping an eye out for families who regularly attend knights events, participate with Family Night activities, or help set or clean up. The Knight Lady award will be announced at each Ladies Knight meeting to wives who are active in activities and events. The Deputy Grand Knight and myself will exclude ourselves from these awards to help with the selection process. I will be needing help from brother knights to choose the winners each month. If there is someone you would like to nominate for any of the three categories, please send me an email to timloebs@gmail.com with the name of who you are nominating and why you think they deserve the award. I am encouraging everyone to participate! As for upcoming events, the annual Sacred Heart Church BBQ will be on Saturday, August the 4 th. This event will be our first recruitment drive of the Columbian year and help would be greatly appreciated. We need men at the booth to help greet people and answer questions. This is our biggest recruitment drive of the year, and one of my favorite. It is an honor to meet potentially new members while sharing information about who we are and what we do in the community. So if you have been looking for a way to be of service, come out and help recruit for an hour or two, and then go and enjoy the BBQ with your family. I ll see you at the booth! God Bless, Tim Loebs Grand Knight Official Officer Installation for Columbian Year 2012-2013 will be Saturday August 11th, 6:00 PM, in our Hall. Wives are welcome to attend. The festivities will be followed by a dinner in our Outback or in the Hall, depending on weather and menu. 2
Father Tom Baker Dear brother Knights, I have never been as focused on triathlon training as this year, knowing that I ll be participating in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. The event, scheduled for Oct. 13, is held on the big island and has been a dream of mine for many years. I still pinch myself thinking I m actually going to participate. In a recent training day I was feeling quite tired, but kept going to complete my 90 mile bike ride followed by a 10 mile run. It caused me to reflect on the spiritual dimension of life. It is easy to give up striving to improve oneself when the going gets tough, but it s precisely in maintaining the discipline during those trying moments that the most growth occurs. As I continue to prepare and pray for you during my training sessions, please keep me in your prayers. Pray that I ll be able to stay healthy for the upcoming dream event. And, let us all keep training our bodies, our minds and our spirits, that we may glorify God with our entire being. Blessings to you all, Fr. Tom 3
Vince Interrante Dear Brother Knights, I recently came across a homily by Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Diocese of Peoria that he gave at a men s conference entitled A Call to Catholic Men of Faith. Below is a abbreviated version of that homily. As members of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic men of faith I thought you might appreciate his inspiring words. There is only one basic reason why Christianity exists and that is the fact that Jesus Christ truly rose from the grave. The disciples never expected the resurrection. The unanimous testimony of all four Gospels is that the terrible death of Jesus on the cross entirely dashed all their hopes about Jesus and about his message, so as much as they loved him, in their eyes Jesus was a failed messiah. Reality, only very slowly, began to penetrate their consciousness when Jesus showed proof of his resurrection. There is no other explanation for Christianity. It should of died out and entirely disappeared when Christ died and was buried, except for the fact that Christ was truly risen, and that during the 40 days before his Ascension, he interacted with his Apostles and disciples, and on one occasion even hundreds of his followers. Can anyone explain the boldness of Peter and John before the Sanhedrin? They warned them never again to teach, or to speak to anyone in the name of Jesus. The elders and the scribes might as well have tried to turn back the tide. Peter and John had seen the Risen Christ with their own eyes and they announced the Resurrection and Good News to everyone they encountered. It has never been easy to be a Christian. The world, the flesh, and the devil will always hate us. As Jesus once predicted, they hated me, they will certainly hate you. But our Faith, when it is fully lived, is a fighting faith and a fearless faith, grounded in the power of the resurrection. The church survived and even flourished during centuries of terrible persecution during the days of the Roman Empire, barbarian invasions, the age of revolution, Nazism and Communism. In our present age we will survive the hatred of Hollywood, the malice of the media, and the wickedness of the abortion industry. It will survive the corruption and incompetence of governments, even the calculated disdain of the President, his appointed bureaucrats in HHS, and the current majority of the federal Senate. As Christians we must love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, but we must also stand up for what we believe in and always be ready to fight for the Faith. The days in which we live now require heroic Catholicism. We can no longer be Catholics by accident, but instead, Catholics by conviction. This Fall, every practicing Catholic must vote their Catholic consciences, or by the following Fall our Catholic schools, our hospitals, our Centers, all our public ministries could easily be shut down because no Catholic institution, under any circumstance, can ever cooperate with the intrinsic evil of killing innocent human life in the womb and no Catholic ministry can remain faithful to the Risen Christ and to his glorious Gospel of Life if they are forced to pay for abortions. Brothers, now is the time for Catholic action and voices. Putting all political affiliations aside, let us search in earnest for the truth and then embrace it. As members of the Knights of Columbus, may we stand up first and foremost for our cherished Catholic beliefs. Yours in Christ, Vincent Interrante 4

Brother Ronald Joe Sandoval Jr. New KofC Insurance Field Agent Assigned to Councils in the Antelope Valley Area as of June 11, 2012 "Ronald Joe Sandoval Jr., was born in Visalia, California on the 7th of December, 1983. Raised in Los Angeles, California, he attended Catholic parochial schools and later attended California State University, Northridge. Graduating with a degree in Sociology and Business, Joe spent a year in a PhD preparatory program at the University with the idea of following the track of a professor, however God called Joe elsewhere. In 2011, Joe joined his father, Ron Sandoval, and was hired through the Baca Agency as an Insurance Field Agent with the Knights of Columbus. Spending most of 2011 serving councils in the Bakersfield area as well as southern California, he provided members the opportunity to partake in the Order's greatest asset, the insurance programs. Diligent at work, Joe awarded 6 councils out of 9 the Star Council Award and ranked 26th place out of the Order's 1,300 total Field Agents in the United States and Canada. Joe was ranked #3 Field Agent in California at the end of 2011 and was also given the Supreme Knights Club designation by Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson. Joe has presented the benefits of KofC programs to CEO executives, business owners and Catholic families who search for ways to prepare for the future of their business, their families and estates. Mid June, 2012 he was assigned to service councils in the high desert areas such as Palmdale, Lancaster, Rosamond, California City, Tehachapi and Ridgecrest. Father McGivney, our beloved founder, started the Knights of Columbus Organization in 1882 with the vision that every Catholic man should be a Knight of Columbus and every Knight of Columbus should be insured by Knights of Columbus insurance programs. Protecting widows and orphans and preserving Catholic wealth, the motto of the Knight of Columbus Insurance Program still holds true today as it did back in 1882. Knights of Columbus Field Agents are the instruments used to carry out Father McGivney's vision and Mr. Sandoval will work with persistence to see that every member has an opportunity. Today, Joe lives with wife, Lisa Sandoval in Los Angeles, California and has four small children. For the past four years he has sat as a board of director for the Los Angeles Pregnancy Services (LAPS) in downtown Los Angeles. LAPS is a crisis pregnancy center that offers pregnancy counseling services to women in an impoverished area of downtown Los Angeles. He has helped to rebuild the center as well as open multiple centers in other much needed areas of Los Angeles. Outside of work and volunteering, Joe enjoys reading, exercising, watching and attending sporting events especially with his only son Joseph Isaiah.
