ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO DECEMBER 28, 2015 READINGS FOR JANUARY 4 Isaiah 60:1-6 Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Matthew 2:1-12 READINGS FOR JANUARY 11 Isaiah 55:1-11 1 John 5:1-9 Mark 1:7-11 With heartfelt thanks for your STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE DECEMBER 21 COLLECT FOR THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY UNAVAILABLE AT EARLY PRINTING TIME O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards. In your prayers please remember Charlotte Hey, who died and whose funeral was at Tobias on Thursday, December 18th. Please also remember her family, friends, and all who mourn her death. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. How closely this prayer ties into our parish prayer : May we outdo one another in forgiveness, thankfulness, peace, and love. May our home be holy, like the home of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. How closely this prayer ties into our own prayer to St. Helen: that we, as a parish, might be established in faith and grow in the virtue of charity; that we might be examples of love; that others, seeing our love and charity, may be attracted and come to know the Master better. May these prayers inspire us and our families to follow and embrace the sacred path where the goodness of the Lord and the joy in giving ourselves to the Lord outshine any of the things of this world. We hope you will be able to join us for Mass on for the holy day marking the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. This day also marks the World Day of Prayer for Peace. With the ongoing and heartbreaking violence in our world, we pray to the Holy Mother of God to intercede for us. Mass times are 5:00 p.m., December 31, and 9:00 a.m., January 1. Instead of creating a list of resolutions, we wrote a prayer or a letter to God recapping the year and looked at what happened through God s loving perspective, acknowledging all the ways that we were graced? What if... We consider January 1st s reading from the Book of Numbers: The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! What if we looked in the mirror and started our days with this prayer? What if we took this prayer to our workplaces or classrooms and prayed it silently (aloud is okay, too!) for our co-workers and classmates? And what if... Our resolutions were tied into ways that we, like Mary, can be open to bringing Christ into the world in new ways, in stronger ways than we have done in the past! Has this even been one of our resolutions before? If not, now can be the time, the year! What if we resolved to look for opportunities to build a peaceful kingdom of God here on earth? SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO JANUARY 4, 2015 EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Down in adoration falling... EPIPHANY HOUSE BLESSING KITS Kits will be available at the doors of church this weekend. Please pick yours up and bless your home for the New Year! Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4-6, 9) The Church has a custom of blessing homes on the Feast of the Epiphany and the week following. Family and friends gather to ask God s blessing on their homes and those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk and write above the home s entryway, 20 + C + M + B + 15. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, May Christ bless the house. and 2015 is the year.
