A Holy Year of Mercy Pope Francis announced a jubilee year, a very special event in the Catholic Church, called the Holy Y ear of Mercy. A jubilee year is called by the church to receive a blessing and pardon from God; this jubilee year begins on December 8, 2015 and will close on November 20, 2016, the feast of Christ the King. The Holy Year of Mercy celebrates being a witness of mercy and invites us all to follow the example of God as merciful, forgiving and loving followers. What is Mercy? Mercy is acts of love by which we care for the bodily and spiritual needs of others. Being merciful frequently includes forgiveness of others, just as God the Father demonstrates forgiveness of our sins through love. Please put the begin date on your calendar now. You will be hearing more about this as the time approaches. Perhaps you might have some ideas on how to celebrate this special year! BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACK DRIVE Our annual Back to School Drive begins next weekend to support Our Lady of Guadalupe Homework Center in East San Jose. You will find the list of supplies in addition to backpacks on the insert in this bulletin. There are 125 low-income students, Kindergarten through 6th grade, who will benefit from your generosity. They attend this before and after school center for homework assistance, snacks and supervised playtime. You may bring your gifts, or give us a check to be your personal shopper. Checks can be made out to Saint Anthony with Backpack Drive written on the subject line. Starting next weekend (July 25/26 through August 8/9), you may bring your gifts to the back of the Church. Thank you, in advance for your generous response. Any questions, you may call or email Kay Banchero at: 408-268-7240 or kaybanchero@yahoo.com, Catholic Social Teaching Committee Coordinator. FROM THE PASTORAL ASSOCIATE S DESK: In other places in Mark s gospel those who follow Jesus are called disciples. But today their title is apostle. This is the only time this title is attributed to them in Mark. So what s so special in today s account? Well, they have returned from the mission Jesus gave them. Previously Jesus gave them authority and sent them out two by two (6:7-13) to preach and heal. While we follow Jesus and listen to his teachings we are disciples. But then he assigns us to go forth and preach and heal then we also bear the title apostle. We are called to teach as parents, professional teachers, catechists, friends and through good example. We have many opportunities to share our knowledge of God with those who ind themselves in their own deserted places of depression, indecision, sadness, poverty, unemployment, loss of a loved one, etc. Many of these people look to us for the concern and care Jesus had for the crowd who were like sheep without a shepherd. On our own we cannot address these needs. But we are not on our own; we have been commissioned with the authority and power given to us through Jesus s spirit. We received that spirit at our baptism and we are reminded today that we are sent on mission to be the Lord s apostles. Jesus also wants us to make time in our lives for rest and relaxation. We are blessed to have opportunities to choose how to spend our time. Part of this time might be spent in prayer. Please remember that God is always watching over us and although our life journey may not always be easy, He is with us through it all. Have a wonderful, relaxing week! Blessings, Joann Maier OUTREACH NEWS Back to School Shoes: Our parish s response to the Sobrato Family Living Center s back-to-school appeal was outstanding. We had more willing donors than children living at the center! Thank you for your participation. Please remember to bring your $30 Payless ShoeSource gift card, cash or check in the envelope provided (unsealed) to any Mass, no later than this weekend. Anyone unable to attend Mass, may leave his or her envelope at the church office. Outreach thanks you for giving a child that extra boost of confidence as he/she heads off to the first day of school in new shoes! Martha s Kitchen: On June 30th, the Outreach Committee sponsored and helped serve the evening meal at Martha s Kitchen. Outreach members Cheryl & Paul Buiano, Dawn & Jim Georgiou, Joann & Vince Macaluso, Mary & Tom Victorine and Ray Flowers assisted in serving 371 hot chicken dinners to the hungry. Sponsorship of this meal is only possible by our parish s contribution to the Outreach collection, for which we thank you. No August Blood Drive Due to cut backs at the Stanford Blood Center, the August blood drive at Saint Anthony Parish has been cancelled; we hope to keep our December blood drive scheduled as planned. The Blood Center also informed us they have increased their minimum unit count from 20 useable units to 30 units. This means our December drive will need 40 donors signed up to ensure a successful drive. Thank you to all those donors who have given their gift of life over the past five years; continue giving at one of these drives this summer: July 30th - Willow Glen Community Center or August 15th - Almaden Community Center. Please contact Corinne Jarrett at: grammycmj@gmail.com or 408-892-3152.
