Pastoral Pondering The Prophet Isaiah says, The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame (Isa 50:7). Yes, the prophets experienced the ridicule and harsh judgment of others, especially when they spoke the truth that God wanted them to deliver. They often felt alone and had to suffer alone or in silence too. They certainly would have understood something of what Jesus experienced in his passion and death on the cross! They would have experienced his loneliness and pain, the abandonment of his disciples, the false accusations and power moves by some to protect their own interests. They would have known too that the sacrifice would not be in vain. They would have understood that with the Lord, there is victory at the end of it all. Jesus, like the prophets, set his face like flint, meaning that he firmly resolved and set himself out on a course that would change the world, despite the personal sacrifice it would require of him. He was willing to endure the worst of human nature and to offer himself up as the spotless lamb of sacrifice for the sins of us all! As holy week begins, may we enter profoundly into this sacred mystery and the unfathomable love of Christ for us! Let us set our faces like flint to loving the Lord for his great sacrifice for us, and may we return that love by our willing sacrifices for the further extension of God s reign in our hearts and in the hearts of all persons who seek Him. A pastoral pondering as Holy Week begins.
