Patty Rathmacher Anthem Jesus is the Only Way Junior Choir - Cathy McKim, Director The Children s Message We Hear God s Word Lesson - Romans 3:19-28 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. 21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. 27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Gospel - John 8:31-36 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 33 They answered him, We are Abraham s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free? 34 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. The five sessions feature teaching presentations by Matthew (set in the mountain cabin where he wrote the songs for the album), interviews from some of the people who shared their stories, and music videos. Come discover the powerful way God uses the story of people's lives, including yours! Optional books are available. Join us next week in the Cornerstone Room! SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR BRANCH DANIEL WHIPPLE, SON OF TRENT & TOSHA WHIPPLE Dear Friends in Christ, In Matthew's Gospel, Jesus commands us to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. In the waters of Baptism, we are joined to the death and resurrection of our Lord and made members of the Body of Christ. Living in fellowship with Him and His people, we grow in faith, love and obedience to the will of God. The Gospel of Mark tells us that once some people brought children to Jesus for Him to touch them, but the disciples scolded those people. When Jesus noticed it, He was angry and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to Me and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." Then He took the children in his arms, placed His hands on them and blessed them. Trent and Tosha, you have presented Branch for Holy Baptism. By doing so, you are accepting the responsibility of raising him in the Christian faith. Before God and this congregation I ask you then, do you promise to faithfully bring him to worship, read Scripture and pray together, teach him the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord's Prayer, and help him grow in Christian faith? If so, answer: "We will with the help of God." You who are sponsors of this child are to be witnesses of his baptism. You are also to remember him in your prayers and encourage him as he grows in Christian faith. If this is your intention, please answer: "We will with the help of God." Dear Congregation, Are you as Christ's community, ready to support these persons in their duties as parents and sponsors and to remember Branch in your prayers? If so, answer: We are. (Please stand for the confession of faith.) Pastor: I address you now as parents, sponsors, and congregation. Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises? Congregation: We do. P: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Let us pray: God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon Branch s father and mother. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them in their own commitment so that they may live out the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Branch Daniel Whipple, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Receive the sign of the cross, on your head and on your heart, as a sign that you will know the Lord, the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his suffering. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Let us pray: Almighty and merciful God and Father, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to a new life through water and your Word. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon Branch. Defend and keep him in your grace, that he may never depart from you, but may always live according to your will, finally receiving the fullness of your promise in your eternal kingdom, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. Pastor: This congregation has a new son in Christ. Congregation: We welcome Branch into the Lord s family. We receive him as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the Kingdom of God. Pastor: The blessing of almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you all. Peace be with you. Amen.
