Pastor Alan s April Message New life springs from darkness. We KNOW this, it happens every year. We struggle and wait through a long cold winter of seemingly endless darkness and wonder if the light will return. The ancient pagans knew of this struggle and so they held ritual parties for the people. Celebrations of light DURING the darkness to remind people and to give them hope that indeed the light would return! Spring would in fact come and seeds would sprout and grow once again and they would see the miracle of life from death. The dead seed once buried would come alive and rise from the ground and produce an abundance. The thing about Lent, for us, is that we all know the end of the story. We have hope lodged in our hearts because we KNOW Christ rises from the grave, life springs from death, every time. Given this knowledge, why do we put ourselves through the arduous journey of Lent, why not just bury our heads in the pillow and stay under the covers until Easter! You know, skip the hard part and go right for the happy ending! There are a number of ways to answer that question; that getting there is part of the experience and even part of the enjoyment of knowing the ending the journey can satisfy a part of us that needs to walk with God in some way the journey is done alone but also together and being alone together is part of the life of the church? All these things are part and parcel of Christian Community and Life Together. This togetherness entails taking care of one another in our church family and those outside it as well. The walk that we are on during Lent is a way of understanding our role in society and what we are called to do as followers of Christ. When we, here at All Saints, see a need and take steps to address that need, we are being one with Christ on his way to the cross. 3 The ministries we do, and the work that goes into them can oftentimes take us into the path of the cross. Our choice then is to bear that cross until the end or to avoid it and choose a different path. Sometimes ministries, that have been life giving in a place for a long time, may need to be altered or changed. This doesn t mean that the current ministry is invalid, it may only be that the path we are on is coming to a crossroad, and that crossroad needs to be examined to see if it may be the way God is calling us for the future. I believe that God is with us here at All Saints! We have been faithful stewards of the gifts we have and together on our walk WITH the community we have served God s people in this place! Now I think that we have come to a crossroad in that journey, and I believe we need to examine it carefully to determine what the way forward might look like. Over the next weeks and months All Saints Lutheran church will need YOUR input and advice on some possibilities and opportunities that may alter the way we do our ministry. There is no need to fear, this is simply a time of new discernment on our part to determine what way we will be continuing our walk as a beloved community of God! I would ask each of you to pray and to be aware of the opportunities to participate in the discussion. Thank you for all you do as a spokesman for the Christian life here at All Saints and in the world, we walk together in faith and grace in the light of Christ, I am blessed to be your shepherd!
