Deacons Larry, Keith and John have served St. Bernard Parish for many years and have given their hearts to its people. We are so blessed to have three committed deacons who genuinely desire the spiritual growth and well being of God s people. I am very grateful for their wisdom, insight and advice on innumerable occasions. Each of these men bring a dedicated love for the Lord expressed uniquely across the wide spectrum of the Church s mission. You are invited and encouraged to join us after the 10am for some light refreshments and an opportunity to give thanks and share appreciation. We will also be recognizing those from our parish who are studying and preparing for service in the diaconate in the years ahead. Having celebrated our own freedom and independence last weekend, I was taken by the contrast of those Christians throughout the world who continue to be horrifically murdered and brutalized. The news media has moved on Last week ISIS slaughtered many Christian fathers in the ancient city of Palymra, Syria in the old amphitheater of the Romans. It is a stunningly beautiful place and one of the World Heritage Sites. A gruesome contrast. ISIS continues to destroy many of the statues and monuments of the ancient world. Treasures forever lost. A minor casualty compared to human life. I studied archeology there as a student while in the heart of Syria and was taken by the kindness of the many families that welcomed me in and toured me around. They were wonderful. One of the priests has since been murdered. It is hard to square the beautiful memory with the present grotesque and evil slaughter. Horrific. We mustn t forget Christians who are persecuted to the point of death throughout the world. We also pray for those who are demonized for being Christian in this country. Not to the point of death but often to social destruction. Pope Francis prayed last week for persecuted Christians in St. Peter s Square and had the following to say: "Those who hate Jesus Christ and murder Christians...before killing them, they don't ask: Are you Lutheran? Orthodox? Evangelical? Baptist? Methodist? No. They say, you are Christian and then they slash your throat. They don't differentiate. They know that Christians have a common root that brings people to life and His name is Jesus Christ. It's the Holy Spirit that brings life. He stressed unity in Christ between all Christians, especially in the present age of hostility to the faith. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
