PRAYING FOR THE DEAD AND PRAYING TO THE DEAD One thing unique about us Catholics is we believe both in praying for the dead and praying to the dead. Protestants say it is useless to pray for the dead. And one should only pray to God and no one else. Why this difference? In the early history of Israel there was no belief in the afterlife. You only lived on with your fame or your offspring. With God s ongoing revelation the Israelites began to believe in the resurrection of the dead. In the time of Jesus there were Sadducees who denied an afterlife, and Pharisees who believed in the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees eventually died out. Resurrection and eternal life are very central to the Christian faith. In the Second Book of Maccabees we read in Chapter 12 that is it good to offer expiatory sacrifice for the dead. Hence, we have a tradition in our Catholic Faith of praying for the dead. We have always accompanied our departed with prayers for eternal peace. Protestants reject the Book of Maccabees as being inspired, and you will not find it in the Protestant Bible. Reacting to the abuse of selling indulgences, Martin Luther threw out all prayers for the dead. He taught, if you had faith, you were saved and went to heaven without any Purgatory, and hence no need to pray for the dead. As Catholics we believe in praying for the dead. We believe when we die we are judged. If we die in God s grace, we are indeed saved. But we might not be quite ready for heaven and spend some time in purgatory. Our prayers help those in purgatory. I explain this way. Suppose you are invited to a royal wedding in a palace. But you find out you are going to be seated with someone you cannot stand. You would have a miserable time at the dinner unless you first were reconciled to the other party. Well, heaven is like a royal wedding feast. If we die and we are not at peace with God, some other individual or group, or even with yourself, purgatory is your chance to be reconciled. After you are at peace, you will be ready to enjoy the banquet we call heaven. Our prayers for the dead is our support and rooting on those seeking reconciliation and peace in purgatory. This is why we pray for the dead, both at their funeral and every time we offer Mass. November 2 nd is All Souls Day. This is set aside each year to pray for the dead who are in Purgatory. Some may wonder how long they need to pray for the dead. How long will they be in Purgatory? We need to remember when we die we no longer are bound by earth time. We are in eternity where all time is the present. Our prayers can go over the centuries to help people who died long ago, even though in our time they are already in heaven. No prayer is ever wasted. It goes to the moment we need it the most. Here at Divine Infant we are having a special Mass of Remembrance on Saturday, November 4, at 5:00p.m. We will especially pray for those we buried this past year. We are also doing something different this year. We are putting up an altarcito near Divine Infant Jesus shrine. We invite you to bring pictures of your loved ones who have been called to God. These will be left up for all of November, the month we especially pray for the dead. We also invite you to write the names of your loved ones in our Book of the Dead, which will be in the narthex (front vestibule) of church next weekend. Just a word about how we celebrate funerals compared to our Protestant brothers and sisters. Because we believe in praying for the dead, we do more than just remember them, or have what some call a Celebration of life. Yes, we do remember them and the good they did. But we also pray for them so that they be free from all sin and celebrate their eternal life. So, a Catholic funeral both remembers and gives thanks for their life in this world and all they accomplished. But we also pray for liberation from Purgatory so they can have the fullness of eternal life. I must confess I always found the expression poor souls in purgatory a bit strange. What is poor about making it to a state of being guaranteed a place in heaven? They have made it, and are going through some basic training to enjoy the fullness of heaven. I think of praying for the dead as similar to encouraging someone going into a recovery program or encouraging someone trying to make peace with a loved one. It is very important that when someone is dying we do all we can to have a priest give them the rites for the dying: sacramental confession, an apostolic blessing (which is a plenary indulgence to free them from purgatory), a renewal of Baptism promises (Baptism is what opens our way to eternal life), and Viaticum, which is our last Communion or food for eternal life. At the funeral Mass we have multiple symbols and rituals of eternal life. The Easter Candle next to the body is a sign of resurrection. Sprinkling the body with Baptism water and covering the casket with white pall is a sign of eternal life and being clothed with Christ. The incense is a sign of respect for the body of the deceased, but also God s mercy covering them over, and our prayers for the deceased rising to heaven. Beside praying for the dead, we Catholics believe in praying to the dead. This is part of what we mean by the Communion of the saints. Much more about that next week. Father Mike Ahlstrom

TABLE OF REMEMBRANCE The annual Mass of Remembrance will be Saturday, November 4 at 5:00 PM. This year, will have a Table of Remembrance in front of the Divine Infant in the church. We invite parishioners who have lost a loved one to bring a small framed photograph of their loved one, including their name, for display on this table. Please put your name and telephone number on the back of the picture. You may bring photos beginning October 28. Our display will remain in the church until the First Sunday of Advent. Photographs can then be picked up at the rectory. This will be an opportunity for all of us at Divine Infant to pray for our deceased loved ones as a parish family. BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE Eternal light will shine upon your saints, O Lord, and they will live forever, alleluia. The autumn triduum of All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day invites us to acknowledge Death, to face our own mortality and to pray for our beloved dead. The Book of Remembrance, in which the names of those Divine Infant parishioners whose funeral liturgy was celebrated during the past year have been inscribed, will be in the narthex of the church during the last two weeks of October and until November4. We invite you to write the names of your deceased loved ones in this book. We invite all parishioners to bring photographs of their deceased loved ones for display in the church. On Saturday, November 4 at the 5 PM Mass, the Book of Remembrance will be carried in procession to the sanctuary, where it will remain until the new liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, December 3. JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS New enrollment is welcome in most of our groups through October! The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/Christmas season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our organizational rehearsal on Wednesday, October 18, from 7:15 PM until 8:30 PM in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. The DI Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. This group has already started their season but Mrs. Schindler, our organist, is always happy to meet new young people interested in joining this group. New from last year is a group of junior high students from our School and Religious Education classes that we call DI Singers. We have modified the rehearsal schedule for this year so that both our School and RE students can have some rehearsal time together each month. Please encourage anyone in grades 5-8 who likes to sing to join our group. They sing once a month at a parish liturgy. The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. We welcome back our DI Hand Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. You will see a few new young members who have joined this year. Our DI Children s Choir (grades 2-4) has already begun their season. We welcomed a few new voices in this choir, too, during September and will continue to welcome new voices in October! The children rehearse on Sunday mornings from 8:30 am - 9:15 am in the music room of the school and sing once a month at Sunday mass. This group will welcome 1st graders right after Christmas! The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. We are a little slow at getting our Cantor Corner up to date on our DI Web Site with bios of our newest cantors. Hopefully, we will have that done soon. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year-round at funerals. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for funerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10am when there is a funeral. Due to the political conflict and the lack of tourism there, a lot of Christians were forced to leave the Holy Land. By displaying these religious articles abroad and selling them, this will help the Christians to survive and keep their community alive. A NIGHT OF ENCHANTMENT The annual Divine Infant Women s Guild Mother Daughter Event will be held on Saturday, November 4th this year. A Raffle is a highlight of this event. Call early to reserve a spot. VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY A Veterans Day program to honor all veterans will be held at Divine Infant Jesus Church on Friday, November 10 at 2:00. The program will include all of the service flags and a musical salute to all the Armed Forces. The award winning Divine Infant Band will also play. The children of the school will be singing the songs, and we invite the audience to join them. There is no charge for the Veterans Day program, and it is open to everyone, veterans and patriots alike. So come and lift your spirits with great music and song. Share the time with the young people, our future leaders of America.

By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at 865-8071. WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
