A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear friends- Happy New Year I hope 2014 is a healthy and happy year for you and your loved ones. Recently Pope Francis wrote a letter in which he encouraged all of us to find joy in the Gospel. He did not mean joy in the sense of being silly. I think he meant that if we truly embrace Jesus way of life as it is laid out in the Gospels we will experience a joy that leads to peace of mind and heart even when life is at times challenging and confusing. He used an interesting expression, one you would not expect a Pope to use about the practice of religion today. He said we should not be sourpusses. He said no one is going to be attracted to our religion if we seem sad and burdened all of the time. The early Christians were so elated by their faith in Christ that, even when they were persecuted for their beliefs, they could be at peace. After all, they believed that Jesus was at their side in good times and difficult moments, that He would strengthen them in this life and one day share with them life eternal. Their joy was a joy borne of hope! If we look around us these days we see many people who have so much in a material sense but little or no room for Christ in their lives. Even though they have many things, after you scratch the surface they don t seem to have that inner peace. In some cases they feel that if they can acquire just one more thing they will be content. It seems to me that that search for contentment without Christ becomes unattainable. So perhaps as we approach a New Year, our resolution might be to be grateful to God for the gift of our faith and try as best we can to be joyful Christians in the best sense of that word. In the coming year let us have the courage to live our faith more authentically, to share it with those who would benefit from a deeper relationship with Christ, to be Christ for all of our sisters and brothers. Fr. Culloty Please join us for our Annual Epiphany Celebration Friday, January 3rd Dinner at 6pm; Pageant at 7pm Join us for a spirit-filled evening of fun, friends, music, carols and a telling of the rich, wonderful stories of the Christmas season.
