2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor His mercy is from generation to generation. Luke 1:50 Upon hearing the stunning message of the Archangel Gabriel that she was to be the mother of the long-awaited Savior, Mary immediately sought the company of her cousin, Elizabeth, with whom she shared her remarkable news. In response to the iconic embrace of these two expectant mothers one old and one young Mary shares her canticle, her song of praise, the Magnificat. This prayer is at the very heart of the long, esteemed tradition of Christian prayer. It is woven into the fabric of the Church s prayer life. It is repeated every evening in the Church s official prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. As such it occupies a privileged place in the Church s expression of her universal faith. The Magnificat also holds special significance for the people of Queen of All Saints Parish. In the first place, we are a people who look to the speaker of the Magnificat as our patroness. This parish was established in her honor and the Basilica was erected in her name. From the moment one enters the nave of our great church, the mosaic image of the Blessed Virgin dominates the interior. Her sparkling blue mantel is spread before her in an all-encompassing gesture of welcome to those who approach. A closer look reveals the faces of many whom she has already gathered under her protective cloak. Her down-turned hands communicate that we are safe in her calming presence. Secondly, the setting for Mary s Canticle, her encounter with Elizabeth, has been captured in one of the beautiful stained glass windows of our Basilica. Matronly Elizabeth, already six months pregnant with John the Baptist, welcomes her youthful cousin, newly pregnant with Savior, in the open doorway of her home in the tiny village of Ein Karem. This is not just a meeting of two exuberant mothers, but the meeting of two ages of the world: before Christ and after Christ. Elizabeth s enthusiastic greeting of Mary and her designation of Mary as the mother of my Lord causes Mary to respond with heartfelt words of her own: His mercy is from generation to generation. We have chosen these words as the title of our Capital Campaign. No words could be more descriptive of this moment in time for Queen of All Saints Parish and also of its place in history. Under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary we are acutely aware of those generations of parishioners who have gone before us and who have provided us with one of the most beautiful parish campuses in the world. At the same time we are aware of our own responsibility to ensure that those who come after us will have similar opportunities here. What we have received we must pass on. That s how it goes with the truths of the faith; that s how it goes with buildings that house those truths. Fifty years ago our ancestors made significant sacrifices to ensure that they had suitable places for worship, for education in the Catholic faith and for providing community service. Their vision also encompassed future generations of believers. We are the beneficiaries of their common vision and their individual sacrifices. The bequest they made to us we now must make to the generations that will comprise Queen of All Saints Parish fifty years from now. Many of us will be gone, but our children will remain. My fervent prayer is that those who follow us through the doors of the Basilica, the school and the Benedict Center fifty years from now will proclaim with Mary, His mercy is from generation to generation. God bless you. Monsignor John Pollard

REASON 30 A recent study undertaken by the Harvard University School of Public Health (Weele) and published by the American Medical Association says that those who attend church services more often will live longer than those who don t. Over a twenty year span, the study surveyed a group of 76,000 female nurses. At the end of twenty years, more than 13,000 of them had died. The women who went to religious services more than once a week were 33% less likely to be in the group who died, compared with those who never attend services. Those who attended services once a week saw their odds of dying go down 26%. For those who attended less than weekly, the odds of dying decreased 13%. Longevity can now be numbered among all the other benefits that result from going to Mass every Sunday. So it s reasonable to conclude that, if you want to enjoy your grandchildren, go to Mass every Sunday. WWW.QASPARISH.ORG Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr.
